The three groups are analogous to closely associated and friendly clans rather than to religious parties. The distinctions between them are marginal differences in customs and life style; their religious beliefs are identical. Each individual colony has about 50 to 150 members, a figure that remains constant as, when a group grows to about 150 it divides and establishes a daughter colony. Michael Bruhn, his younger sister Gudryn, and their widowed mother live in a castle in Moravia. Madame Bruhn's field workers had fled two months before when her husband died, fearing he had the plague. She now illegally welcomed Hutterites to her estate to farm the land, giving them permission to build a Bruderhof because she felt they worshipped God in the right way. When a doctor wearing ragged clothing appeared at their gate, Michael thought he, too, must be a Hutterite. He learned later that this was the famed doctor, Paracelsus. When Michael's sister, Gudryn, became ill, this 'doctor in rags' was able to help her. Michael was impressed and began to plan when he could be a doctor. And then tragedy struck the Bruhn household. They were arrested along with the Hutterites. Their land was taken by King Ferdinand. Michael was put into chains with the Hutterites to become a galley slave. Through an exciting escape Michael found Paracelsus. He decided to become both a Hutterite and a missionary doctor all because of Paracelsus, a 'doctor in rags,' who helped people.

The Hutterian Brethren, or Hutterites, had been practicing community of goods for more than a century when Andreas Ehrenpreis was elected bishop of the brotherhood in 1639. He was to occupy that office until his death in 1662, some 23 fateful years. In the face of severe crises, which included war, increased persecution, and the complete expulsion of the Hutterites from their former homes in Moravia, Ehrenpreis initiated a remarkable revival and reformulation of Hutterian faith and practice. Andreas Ehrenpreis' reforms left a lasting imprint on the Hutterites, leading the historian Robert Friedmann to call Ehrenpreis the second founder of the Hutterian Brethren. Nevertheless, no full-length study has ever been done on the Hutterites of this period and their influential bishop. Wes Harrison thus brings much needed light to this important chapter of the Hutterite experience. Harrison's ground-breaking study makes use of all available sources, the majority of which have never before been analyzed. His work and approach have been described as

Department of Ecology News Release - August 1, 2000
Hutterian Brethren and land owner fined $40,200 for illegal irrigation
SPOKANE - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has fined the Stahl Hutterian Brethren and a man who leases land to the Brethren a total of $40,200 for illegally using water in what's called the "Odessa sub-area"-a region in Central Washington with severe water availability problems. Ecology fined the Stahl Hutterian Brethren $27,000, while fining Gordon Gering of Ritzville $13,200. Gering owns approximately 65 acres of the 175 acres the Hutterians were irrigating without a water right this spring and summer. The property is located 21 miles east of Moses Lake adjacent to I-90. In May, the farm was ordered by Ecology to stop irrigating the land and to install a water-measuring device (flow meter) and report to Ecology the volume of water being used. The Hutterians filed an appeal of the cease-and-desist order to the state's Pollution Control Hearings Board. However, according to field investigators, the irrigation continued, in violation of the order, and a flow meter was not installed. The Stahl Hutterian farm is located in Adams County within the "Odessa sub-area," one of only three specially designated sub-areas in the state. The ground water in the Odessa sub-area is managed more closely because of documented declines in the water tables. The other two sub-areas in Washington are the Quincy sub-area and the smaller Duck Lake sub-area in Okanogan County.

Hutterite member of Hutterian Brethren, Anabaptist sect that found refuge from persecution in Moravia and the Tirol; it stressed community of goods on the model of the primitive church in Jerusalem. The community, which acquired the name of its charismatic leader, Jakob Hutter (tortured and burned as a heretic in 1536), still survives, mostly in the western sections of the United States and Canada with a population of about 20,000. In colonies of 60 to 150 persons, they operate collective farms ( Bruderhof ) and, not unlike the Old Order Amish, remain aloof from outside society, taking no part in politics. Children are educated inside the colony until age 14 or until a minimum age decreed by state or province.

The Hutterites are divided into three groups :
Schmiedeleut subdivided into two groups, the Hutterian Brethren and the Committee Hutterites, in 1992. The Schmiedeleut are all found in Manitoba; and North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
2) Dariusleut; and 3) Lehrerleut . The Lehrerleut and the Dariusleut are located in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Colombia; and Montana and Washington. All the "traditional" Hutterites live in the Great Plains and Prairie Provinces ; but the Bruderhof Communities, who call themselves Hutterian Brethren live in the East. The Hutterian Brethren Church of the Dariusleut and Lehrerleut Conference (with the agreement of many Schmiedleut communities) expelled the "Society of Brothers" [Bruderhof] in 1990.
