Gnosticism There are a number of sites which have done an excellent job explaining and introducing Gnosticism much better than I am able or willing to do here. See my links page or go directly to the Ecclesia Gnostica page at http://www.gnosis.org Here's some of my own studies on the topic: Beyond Duality - Some ideas on the Concept of Syzgies Psalm 16 A Study on the Rosary Ecstasic Religion Variations on St. Elizabeth of the Trinity ... A Prayer to the Music of the Spheres Briefly, Gnosticism is a tradition of salvation through realization, knowledge (gnosis). While Gnosticism is commonly associated with early Christianity, its roots actually pre-date Christianity. Gnostic belief systems have emerged multiple times in the Christian era (such as the Cathar movement) and strong gnostic elements continue to exist in Sufism and the Shi'ite traditons. The gnostic emphasis on knowledge and self-realization has been a thorn to the organized Imperial Church. Afterall, how can one herd a group of free-thinkers who take responsibility for their own progress and awareness? Better to preach a doctine of blind faith, meekness, and obediance to authority. Hence the favorite sheep/shepard metaphors and the "need" for an intermediatory between the individual and God. Gnosticism Liberationism Avant-garde Archeology Tools Links About me

Near-death experience of Gnostics
Paul's journey to the third heaven The Bible contains a letter by the Apostle Paul to the Christians in the city of Corinth, Greece, where he had founded a church on his first visit there. The Christians at this church were being divided by the teachings of so-called "false teachers" that were infiltrating the church there and Paul wrote a letter telling them to not forget what they were taught by Paul. These "false teachers" were trying to get people to follow their teachings and not Paul's. In order to put these false teachers to shame, Paul uses false pride by boasting about himself and telling the church why he is more qualified than the false teachers. He tells them of his sufferings and how he was once stoned and left for dead (2 Cor. 11:25). The letter goes on to say:
"I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up the the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know - God knows. And I know that this person - whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows - was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that humans are not permitted to tell." (2 Cor. 12:1-4)

C HRISTIAN A R ESEARCH M INISTRY www.carm.org HOME PAGE Gnosticism
Gnosticism traces its roots back just after the beginning of the Christian Church. Some researchers state that evidence of its existence even predates Christianity. Whichever the case, the error of gnosticism had affected the culture and church of the time and possibly even a earned a mention in 1 John 4
The word "gnosticism" comes from the Greek word "gnosis" which means "knowledge." There were many groups that were Gnostic and it isn't possible to easily describe the nuances of each variant of Gnostic doctrines. However, generally speaking, Gnosticism taught that salvation is achieved through special knowledge (gnosis). This knowledge usually dealt with the individual's relationship to the transcendent Being.
A more detailed Gnostic theology is as follows. The unknowable God was far too pure and perfect to have anything to do with the material universe which was considered evil. Therefore, God generated lesser divinities, or emenations . One of these emanations, Wisdom desired to know the unknowable God. Out of this erring desire the

Vol. 5, No. 2, October 2001 Wake up! Gnosticism and Buddhism in The Matrix By Frances Flannery-Dailey, Hendrix College
and
Rachel Wagner, The University of Iowa Abstract The Wachowski brothers' 1999 hit release The Matrix draws on multiple religious traditions to establish its complex worldview. Two of the most prominent are Gnostic Christianity and Buddhism, which, like the film, pose humanity's fundamental problem and its solution in terms of ignorance and enlightenment. Because of ignorance, people mistake the "material" world for something real, but they may "wake up" from this dream with help from a guide who teaches them their true nature. This article explores the film's pervasive allusions to Gnosticism and Buddhism, which in turn opens up the question of the film's overarching message and ultimate view of reality.

Gnosticism and the Gnostic Jesus
by Douglas Groothuis
from the Christian Research Journal, Fall 1990, page 8. The Editor-in-Chief of the Christian Research Journal is Elliot Miller. Popular opinion often comes from obscure sources. Many conceptions about Jesus now current and credible in New Age circles are rooted in a movement of spiritual protest which, until recently, was the concern only of the specialized scholar or the occultist. This ancient movement Gnosticism provides much of the form and color for the New Age portrait of Jesus as the illumined Illuminator: one who serves as a cosmic catalyst for others' awakening. Many essentially Gnostic notions received wide attention through the sagacious persona of the recently deceased Joseph Campbell in the television series and best-selling book, The Power of Myth . For example, in discussing the idea that "God was in Christ," Campbell affirmed that "the basic Gnostic and Buddhist idea is that that is true of you and me as well." Jesus is an enlightened example who "realized in himself that he and what he called the Father were one, and he lived out of that knowledge of the Christhood of his nature." According to Campbell, anyone can likewise live out his or her Christ nature.[1] Gnosticism has come to mean just about anything. Calling someone a Gnostic can make the person either blush, beam, or fume. Whether used as an epithet for heresy or spiritual snobbery, or as a compliment for spiritual knowledge and esotericism, Gnosticism remains a cornucopia of controversy.

Contact Me GNOSTICISM Gnosis means knowledge, usually of deeper, inner, spiritual truths, based on direct experience. Spiritual knowledge has been sought by human beings since the beginning of time. We seem to be motivated by three basic drives: survival, pleasure, and knowledge. Our history is filled with many great spiritual leaders, from the Buddha to Christ, who taught on two different levels: exoteric and esoteric. Gnosis and mysticism is concerned with the latter. It is an intuitive, right brained, inner approach to spiritual knowledge It relies on our own, individual direct experience of the divine, from within ourselves. This knowledge is not taught in or acquired from the exoteric, institutional churches of today. Rather, it is obtained in an inner, spiritual journey, which we must personally pursue. It is a state of being, of permanent union with the divine. We become one with the source that is within yet beyond this physical world. This source is neither male nor female, but encompasses both and is beyond both. "Om kara sat nam sri wahe guru." - One sound, essence of truth, O Mother Creator of the Universe, awesome knowledge that dispels ignorance, we pursue thee!

Gnosticism
A combination of the philosophy of Plato and Eastern mystery religions, Gnostics believe salvation comes from knowing ( gnosis ), especially knowledge of secret, hidden teachings. The early Christian Gnostics claimed their secret information gave them great insight to true Christianity. Some claimed to have wisdom that Christ gave in secret. There were (and are) multiple groups of Gnostics, some denying the divinity of Christ, others the humanity. Most identified the God of the Old Testament with the evil diety who they believed created the material world in which souls were trapped; they tended to revere those who opposed him.
