"Congregationalists: People of the New Covenant" Lake Country Congregational Church – Hartland, Wisconsin February 18, 2001-25 th Anniversary Celebration Rev. Steven A. Peay, Ph.D. [text: Ephesians 2: 11-22] ". . . remember that you were at that time separated from Christ alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise . . . But now in Christ Jesus you who were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ." Paul is reminding the church at Ephesus that it was not very long ago that they were in the position of being strangers and aliens. Before they had not been in a covenant relationship with God, but now they were in a new relationship with God and with each other. Paul holds up the Israelites because they were the covenant people par excellence . The whole of the Old Testament – the word 'testament' means 'covenant' – is the record of God's establishing the covenant relationship with humanity in general, and Israel in particular. In the Jewish mind God had approached their nation when he called Abraham and had renewed this formally with Moses when he said to them, "I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God" (Exodus 6: 7). This covenant relationship put them in a place of privilege, but also in a place of responsibility. What, then, is a covenant? A covenant is a solemn promise made binding by an oath. The oath may be either verbal or symbolic. The oath demonstrated the actor's obligation in making good the promise. The covenant-concept was quite prevalent in the ancient near East, but there are profound differences between those and the Hebrew idea of covenant. Typically a covenant is a bi-lateral arrangement; this is not the case with that entered into by God and Israel. The covenant is seen as a gift God makes to the people, which takes the covenant-relationship beyond the level of a contract into that of a bond of communion. The Dutch Old Testament scholar, Theodore Vriezen, has said, "the Covenant between God and the people did not bring these two 'partners' into a contract-relation, but into a communion, originating with God, in which Israel was bound to him completely and made dependent upon him."

Katarina Stefanova Tsilka (1868-1952) - Published Sketch
November 2, 1901 Miss Stone's Companion in Captivity
By Rev. C. L. Goodrich, Plainfield, N.J. Miss Stone's name has been on everyone's lips of late. The interest in her and desire for her release have been intense. But comparatively little thought has been given to her companion, Mme. Tsilka, because she is not an American and few in America know who she is. Those who do know her, however, feel that she is one in whom Christians of America may well take a deep interest, and that her presence with Miss Stone makes double reason for speedy raising of the ransom. But a little more than a year ago she went from this country, to which she had come to fit herself for unselfish labors among her own people. Some who have not recognized her in the reports under the name of Mme. Tsilka will know her under her maiden name, Katherine Demetrius Stephanood. She is the daughter of a Greek priest of Bansko, Macedonia. Her father had such pride in his child that he wished to make her distinguished by doing something for her which other fathers did not do for their daughters. So he sent her to school. But the school was for boys, no girsl were expected. The boys made sport of her, the teacher was rude to herthe result was that one day she fled form the school in tears, feeling that she could never go back. But she wished to learn. She knew that in another quarter of the town there was a school whose teacher had been taught in an American mission. Converts of the missions were despised by the members of the Greek Church. Children were forbidden to go near them. But this child found her way thither and sttod hesitating without.

The Fifty Five Delegates to the Constitutional Convention
The colonists were familiar with deist thinking. But deism never gained a strong foothold in America. The first Great Awakening, the religious revival of the 1740s, was partially responsible for cutting short the spread of deism, In many states at the time of the Constitutional Convention, confessed deists were not allowed to hold public office. Deism was generally held in low esteem, as such laws indicate. Additionally, Deism as practiced at the time of America's founding was far different from what we find in our country today, and it certainly was not atheism.

Pudsey Congregational (Independent) Church Records
Also known as the Independent Chapel, this church is one of the oldest protestant Non-conformist Churches in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
The church in Pudsey started with preaching in a barn in 1690, but other meetings had been held in various places before that year. Elkanah Berry was pastor until 1717.
A chapel was built near Uppermoor, Pudsey, in 1722, and then in 1794 a new chapel was opened at Chapletown in Pudsey.
The last service was held there in April 1864, and a new church was built, the first stone being laid in April 1865.
This fine building was finally demolished in the 1970's, with services continuing in the church school building.

T he earliest available baptism register was kept by Elkanah Berry, who was a pastor at the Old Independant Chapel in Pudsey until 1717, then moved to Barnsley. The single Barnsley entry at the end indicates that the register may be complete for his period in Pudsey. The chapel itself became the Congregational Church. The First Congregationalist Church
The Church The Grave Pastor Horner ... Graveyard First Congregationalist Church:
In 1878, Pastor Horner established three parish churches throughout the Crystal River Valley . All of the congregations held fund raisers to build a manse in Marble Springs . The Pastor held services in the Marble Edifice on the first and third Sundays of each month and travelled to Carbondale and Redstone for the other Sundays.
The church closed its doors in 1931. The Church:
We, the lesser sex , mold the
morals of the greater world. We, the weaker sex , fight on
for temperance and peace. We, the fairer sex , fashion our young into upright pillars of the community. Let us then petition the stronger sex
to grant us the tools we need for these allotted tasks.
Rachel Cole's address to the Ladies Aid Society, "Why Ladies Require the Vote," September 7th, 1889. Pillars:
We look to you, ladies , to uphold the sanctity of the Lord. Ladies, the purity you instill in your sons forms
the foundation of the church;
the charities you foster in your homes build the walls of the church;
