"The Centennial"
Summit Mills Church of the Brethren
The Summit Mills Church of the Brethren is now 100 years old, second oldest church in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. (The Church at Berlin, Pa., called the Grove Church was built in 1845). The Summit Mills Church was built in 1846 by Samuel Miller (born June 26, 1799, died June 7, 1851). He is buried in the Lichty Cemetery where one may see his grave today. Samuel Miller was an uncle to Elder Joel C. Gnagey, and a great-great uncle to Mrs. Ada Gnagey Saylor. He and his wife, Mary, gave the deed to the church for the grounds and the church building, which is 40 by 110 feet, on October 29, 1849, to Bishops Peter Cober and Jacob Moyer of the congregation called Brethren. Elk Lick Congregation
The Summit Mills Church of the Brethren was originally called the Elk Lick Congregation. The two oldest ministers were John Livengood and John Buechley. John Berkley Jr. and Jacob Lichty were the first two bishops in the Elk Lick Congregation. The Summit Mills Church of the Brethren became one of the three churches of the former Elk Lick Congregation in 1877, the other two being Meyersdale and Salisbury. Joel C. Gnagey and Jonas Lichty were the first elders. John A. Miller was a minister. Deacons were S. S. Flickinger, William Lichty, Jacob M. Lichty, John B. Schrock, Samuel D. Gnagey, Samuel A. Maust, John N. Davis, and J. J. Fike. Ministers elected were Abraham D. Gnagey and Daniel M. Fike in 1879, Samuel Berkley in 1912.

Church of the Brethren STATEMENTS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Annual Conference, 1959. We commend current efforts to abolish capital punishment and call upon Brethren everywhere to use their influence and their witness against it. Annual Conference, 1975. (The following statement is part of a much longer paper on "Criminaljustice." It is included in a section of recommendations entitled "Reforming the System.") " . . .Brethren are encouraged to work for the following changes: that the use of capital punishment be abolished." General Board, 1979. The Church of the Brethren General Board views with deep concern and alarm the resumption of the use of capital punishment. We affirm the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference Statements of 1957, 1959, and 1975 which uphold the sanctity of human life and personality, oppose the use of capital punishment, and encourage Brethren to work for the abolition of the death penalty. We encourage Brethren to express their opposition to capital punishment, especially to governors and state legislators in states where capital punishment has been established or is being considered. We deplore the taking of human life, whether by the hand of an individual or through the working of a judicial system. We pray, in the spirit of Jesus Christ who calls us to share his ministry of reconciliation, that our society will turn away from the use of capital punishment.

http://www.bwcob.org/heritage/history.shtml
History compiled and written by
Emmert F. Bittinger The date of the earliest services by the Brethren in the Dayton-Bridgewater area are not known, but they evidently go back to about the time when Rev. Daniel Garber, son of Elder John Garber of Flat Rock congregation, moved into the Dayton area in 1790. His brother-in-law, John Wampler, also came about that time. They lived not far apart with their lands being drained into the North Fork of Cooks Creek which flowed southward through Dayton, continuing a mile distant and northeast of Bridgewater and Mt. Crawford and on into the North River. Over the years many Brethren farmers lived on the rich farmlands drained by this stream.
Garber's Meetinghouse of the Cooks Creek Congregation
(photo from Brethren in Bridgewater , by Roger E. Sappington, 1978,
originally from D. H. Zigler, History of the Brethren in Virginia Working together, the Garber, Wampler, Miller, Bowman and other families they built up a prosperous body of worshipping Brethren called the Cooks Creek congregation. Mostly, they worshipped in the homes of their members from Sunday to Sunday, choosing locations centered in the vicinities around Dayton, Bridgewater, Beaver Creek. In this way travel distances were minimized. By 1822 the congregation had grown to such an extent that Garber's church was built near Dayton, the oldest continuously used meetinghouse of the Brethren in Virginia. By the 1820s, the Beaver Creek Brethren had divided off from the Cooks Creek congregation. They built their own church house in 1828.
