The Church of the Brethren traces its beginning in 1708 to a small group of German Christians who sensed God calling in a deeper manner than they experienced in the churches of the time. After years of studying the scriptures, and meeting in houses to pray and seek God's will for their lives, eight men and women became convinced that God was calling them to be baptized as adult believers into a life of discipleshipfollowing in Jesus' wayrecognizing that this step of baptism would be contrary to the rules of the governing authorities of their time and place. Under the leadership of Alexander Mack, these eight embarked on a journey of faith that we trace to our congregation today.

THE BRISTOLVILLE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN
(click here for music) Jesus said . . . "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, but by Me."
(John 14:6)
Greetings from the Bristolville Church of the Brethren, located in northeast Ohio 30 miles north of Youngstown!
With roots in the Anabaptist and Pietist movements, we are part of a 140,000-member Protestant denomination which traces its roots to Germany and the year 1708. Serious believers were dissatisfied with the "politically correct" churches of the day, which put an emphasis on man-made standards rather than the plain and pure Word of God. Believers often met informally to pray and study Scripture. It was in 1708 that Alexander Mack and seven other individuals reached the conviction that as followers of Christ, they should be baptized as an outward testimony of their inward commitment. Since infant baptism was routinely practiced in the state-approved churches, to be rebaptized as an adult was considered a crime against the state. As a result, many believers suffered persecution, and even martyrdom. As a result of the persecution, believers who made up the Brethren movementknown at that time as "New Baptists," and later German Baptist Brethrenbegan migrating to America. The name "Church of the Brethren" was not used until 1908. Four other denominations trace their heritage to the same source as the Church of the Brethrenthe Old Order Brethren, Ashland Brethren, Dunkard Brethren, and Grace Brethren.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE DEDICATION
The Smith Mountain Lake Community Church, a new church start of the Church of the Brethren, dedicated their newly purchased five-acre site March 19. Located seven miles south of Burnt Chimney, Va., in the Roanoke area, this property was secured through a partnership of the Community Church and the congregations of the Virlina District.
Pastor Jerry Naff spoke on the importance of giving thanks to God for this expression of vision, faith and hope, and Virlina district executive David K. Shumate led those assembled in a dedicatory prayer. The service concluded with a ground-breaking service followed by remarks by John Hamilton, trustee of the Hamilton Trust from which the property was purchased. Members of the Smith Mountain Lake Building Committee, chaired by Clinton Wade, expressed the hope that they will be in their new building by November. Completion of the building will require a $230,000 indebtedness. The fellowship reports having received pledges totaling $103,000 toward this goal. The Smith Mountain Lake Community Church began in 1995, located in a resort community. Judy Mills Reimer, current executive director of the General Board, was the founding pastor. Top: A sign announces the coming new church building; Middle: Pastor Jerry Naff, Cami Jones and Rick Taylor lead in the service. What is the Brethren Church?
The Brethren Church began in Schwarzenau, Germany in 1708 primarily out of a desire for religious freedom and in reaction to the government controlled churches of the day. By the mid 1700's the Brethren Church had migrated to America in pursuit of that same religious freedom. The heritage of the Brethren church would be similar to that of other "Anabaptist" denominations such as the Mennonite, German Baptist Brethren, Church of the Brethren and Grace Brethren. The Brethren maintain that the entire Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) is the inspired Word of God and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins. We also believe that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and that He has ascended into heaven where He intercedes on our behalf. Having ascended into heaven, Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to live in the hearts of His people as our comforter, counselor and friend. We believe that those who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior will have the assurance of a home in heaven with Christ for all eternity. The Brethren Church seeks to live out their faith in Christ on a daily basis. Obedience to Christ is demonstrated through a commitment to a daily relationship with God and involvement in the ministries of the church. We believe that God empowers His people to this obedient service through the gifts of His Holy Spirit. Each person who believes in Christ is equipped by God to perform some meaningful function within the context of the Body of Christ.

CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN? In the New Testament, the word Brethren describes a community of men and women who choose another way of living .. the way of Jesus. The Church of the Brethren, begun in Germany almost 300 years ago, still draws those who want to continue Jesus' work of loving service.
Brethren look to the New Testament for guidance rather than to doctrine, or rules, designed by humans. Our faith emphasizes compassion, peacemaking, and moderation in living. We baptize those who seek to follow Jesus; we anoint for healing and wholeness; and in our Love Feast we reenact the Last Supper at which Jesus washed his disciples' feet and offered the bread and cup in Communion.
Brethren work locally and worldwide to help victims of war, poverty, and natural disasters. We believe Jesus showed us another way of living ... a way of peace and love. We strive to continue the work of Jesus ... peacefully, simply, and together. Official Homepage of the Church of the Brethren BACK

Church of the Brethren
There were several Old Order Brethren congregations in Somerset County. Many people incorrectly refer to this sect of the Anabaptists as "DUNKARD". This term was applied to the members of the Church of the Brethren in the late 19th century and early 20th. The word "Dunker" was acutally a anglicized corruption of the German word, "Tunker," which means "dipper" or immerserer referring to the mode of baptism practiced by this group. The term is still used today by two minor conservative orders, Old Order Dunkards and the Dunkard Brethren. The mode of baptism practiced by this group was adopted during this groups founding in Pennsylvania in the 1770's. In Brothers Valley Township It is believed that the first religious group to arrive in Somerset County were the German Baptists or "Die Bruder's Leute". They are the one's who named "Brueder Thal" or Brothers Valley and were said to have been organized in the county as early as 1763. In Stony Creek Township The Stony Creek congregation called, Glade Church, first records its founding in 1763 under the supervision of George William MARTIN. In 1770, a list of 17 members is recorded by the Rev. Martin and his wife.

Brethren Student Fellowship (BSF) is an association of Church of the Brethren students and friends offering various opportunities for Christian community and personal growth as a part of the overall university experience.

BSF is a place to explore faith and to ask the tough questions of faith and meaning in an atmosphere of genuine care and support, in the midst of friendships and fun with other Anabaptist students.
Our Vision and Values
The Church of the Brethren believes that we discover and live our Christian faith best in the context of a faith community, where God's spirit speaks to believers as they discern together their life experiences and how the spirit of God speaks through the Bible and in today's setting. Brethren Student Fellowship and Good Shepherd COB are inviting and welcoming faith communities, where students find encouragement and opportunity to stretch themselves and to grow in their understanding of faithful living.
Sunday Morning Worship
Worship services at Good Shepherd begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. During the fall and spring semesters, a continental breakfast is provided starting at 9:30 for students who may not have access to the dining halls before worship. If you need a ride to church from campus, please contact the pastors and they will gladly arrange one for you:
