FEATURES, IDEAS
The end of long airport lines is approaching the runway By Ruth Walker (walkerr@csps.com)
Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor TORONTO Details are everything. And time really is money. It's hard to imagine where these old saws could be more apt than in aviation - especially since global air travel is expected to double, roughly, between the beginning of this new decade and its end. LINE UPON LINE: One of the unexpected bottlenecks at airports like Toronto is passport control. A new smart card in development with biometric data would allow passengers to swipe it as easily as an urban commuter at a subway turnstile.
MARK O’NEILL/AP The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a standards-setting body of the United Nations, with headquarters in Montreal, is abuzz over new technologies being counted on to unclog air-travel congestion. At the "macro" end these developments include satellite-based air-traffic control systems; at the "micro" end they include "smart cards" that will let you breeze through passport controls with the nonchalance of an urban commuter swiping a transit pass at a subway turnstile. Indeed, ICAO sees passport lines as one of the unexpected bottlenecks in the transportation system. The ICAO standard time for a departing passenger to be "processed" - from airline check-in to aircraft pushing back from the gate - is 60 minutes. The standard for arriving passengers - from stepping off the plane to emerging from the arrival hall - is 45 minutes.

Email address: Click here Tune in, drop out A Review by Ron Charles The antiwar movement may be sprouting up again, but there's no climate for flower power this time around. The hippies who led America's last great protests against military intervention have been effectively co-opted by Old Navy, their radical message fermented in the stills of Madison Avenue down to an intoxicating syrup of consumerism. If that weren't enough to shoo the merrymakers off, a couple of major literary authors have recently turned the water cannons on them, blasting away their puka beads with a torrent of bitter satire. The first was A.S. Byatt's Whistling Woman , which ended in a conflagration sparked by radical antiuniversity students. And now comes T.C. Boyle's Drop City, a rebuke of hippie culture that would make Abbie Hoffman put on a tie and write a humble apology on Crane's stationary. There seems little need for concern that the Age of Aquarius will assert itself on anything besides teen fashion, but these authors have assembled a phalanx of commentary to...

by Craig Branch Founder: Mary Baker Eddy. Founding date: August 23, 1879. Scriptures: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Miscellaneous Writings, Manual of the Mother Church. Official Publications: Retrospection and Introspection, Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel. Organizational Structure: The founding and pillar church in Boston serves as headquarters and is governed by a Board of Directors. All other churches are considered branches of the "Mother Church." Instead of preachers, Christian Science uses readers who read prescribed passages from the Bible followed by an interpretive reading from Science and Health. Unique Terms: Christian Science utilizes "practitioners" who pray for the sick. Eddy believed in "Malicious Animal Magnetism" (M.A.M.), which is negative mental energy or power, on the level of black magic. "Reading Rooms" are local Christian Science libraries where members go to read Eddy's works to aid their spiritual evolvement. Other Names: The Church of Christ, Scientist (official name).

Christian Science Organization at Stanford University (CSO)
"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings. The wakeful shepard beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day." - Mary Baker Eddy, discoverer and founder of Christian Science. "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John viii. 32 The Christian Science Organization at Stanford University is an expression of Church, "the structure of Truth and Love", as defined by the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. It represents Christian Science in the campus community. The purpose of this organization is to promote the reinstatement of "primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing", to afford the university community an opportunity to learn the truth about Christian Science, and to provide support for Christian Scientists in the university. WEEKLY MEETINGS We meet every Monday during the school year from 5 to 6pm in the side chapel of Memorial Church.
These meetings consist of readings from our "pastors", the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by Mary Baker Eddy, and a time for the sharing of testimonies and remarks on Christian Science. All are welcome.

      Send e-mail to: mclaughlina@csps.com
BOSTON Every Thursday at noon, in a concrete-and-glass office building in downtown Harrisburg, Pa., a handful of workers gathers to bridge two realms long separated by a great divide - religion and business. In a top-floor conference room, where the usual talk is of pie charts and the bottom line, this clutch of believers ponders the Bible. The topic last week: the book of John. "It gives us an opportunity to recharge our batteries without leaving the workplace," says participant John Forney, an employee at Penn National Insurance. "And it reminds us there's a moral background to the way you should treat other people." As Bible study and prayer groups like this one multiply (some estimates say they've doubled to 10,000 in the past 10 years), spirituality in the American workplace is slowly taking on greater significance. The movement, which spans from Bible groups to New Age chant sessions, serves a broad range of interests. Some employee groups focus on attaining personal fulfillment on the job. Others concentrate on corporate values, working to reconcile the Golden Rule with that entrenched business maxim, "nice guys finish last."

      Taking Somalia Seriously Again
By David Smock In diplomatic circles mention of Somalia provokes embarrassment and avoidance behavior. During the three years since the withdrawal of American troops from Somalia, the US has minimized its involvement there and maintained a low profile. That policy, a reaction to an intervention in Somalia that went awry, may have had some justification in the past, but the time is ripe for reassessment and for the US to contribute to peace in Somalia with minimal exposure. We owe it to Somalis and to ourselves to complete what we started in late 1992. We owe it to Somalis and to ourselves to complete what we started in late 1992.
The US doesn't need to assume the role of peacemaker or peacekeeper. There are too many mediators stumbling over each other already. With encouragement from the Eastern African regional organization (IGAD), Ethiopia is the most energetic. But officials from Egypt, Yemen, Kenya, and Italy are also eager to be seen as midwives for a Somalia peace settlement. While limited success has been achieved through these initiatives, Somalis see some of these actors as primarily serving their own interests. Moreover, the UN has been largely discredited in Somalia because of its mistakes in 1993-95. In contrast, the US still maintains considerable credibility, and Somalis lament the lack of US interest.
