Before the coming of St. Patrick, the Celtic people had a faith of their own that stretched back many centuries into the past; the study of this faith, as it existed then, and the modern expression of it through Wicca, the Craft of the Wise, is enlightening and enjoyable, whether one is a practitioner or just interested in early Irish and Celtic history. Much has come to light in recent archaelogy concerning the sacred spaces of the Celts, about the Druids and their religion, and how intertwined the old ways are with the way we mark our own seasons and holidays.

Ogham: An Irish Alphabet
by Cristoir Mag Fhearaigh
and Tim Stampton
Ogham is a very ancient pre-Roman Irish/Celtic runic alphabet found mostly on boundary markers, and even found in America (said to be proof that the Irish got here before Columbus!)this book, written in Irish/English format, will give you a good start in learning the fascinating history of this historic writing. The history and origins of the alphabet are covered as well as the connection between the letters and certain trees. This is definitely one of two classics for your bookshelf, the other being "Celtic Tree Mysteries" by Stephen Blamires, sold here. BUY IT HERE !

Celtic Paganism
A to Z of Ancient Ireland
A mini-encyclopedia based on the book Ancient Ireland: The Users' Guide by Conan Kennedy. There's some interesting information here, but some of his ideas are, shall we say, rather unique. And sometimes unintentionally humourous. Take it with a grain of salt.
ADF
The neo-druid organization started by Isaac Bonewits. A little too bureaucratic for my tastes, but there's some good information here.
Animal Symbolism in Celtic Mythology
Clannada na Gadelica
Recommended Site. The Clannada identify themselves as "Gaelic Traditionalists", rather than the more commonly used term Celtic Reconstructionists, since they feel there is not yet a clearly agreed-upon definition of that. Their site contains a wealth of information and is well worth exploring, although I don't necessarily agree with all of their views. I did find the site's navigational system a bit confusing, so be sure and explore all areas of their site — things are not necessarily where you'd expect them to be (for example, the essay on "Why Wicca is not Celtic" is under "Local GT Communities", for some reason).
Cornish Folklore Index
A fascinating collection of folklore from one of the less well-known of the "Six Celtic Nations".

The `medicinal' part covers topics such as homeopathy, Bach flower essences, herbal remedies, nutritional uses and more. The 'magical' part encompasses the connection of goddesses and gods to the trees, nature spirits, the tree alphabet and tree calendar, planetary rulerships, and Celtic mythology and folklore. The book also covers practical uses of trees for food, natural dyes, baskets and more.

A Druid's Herbal
for the Sacred Earth Year
by Ellen Evert Hopman
Ms. Hopman demonstrates a wide knowledge of the Celts and their mythology -her book includes a Celtic dictionary, which makes it all the more appealing to anyone interested in ancient Celtic lore. She moves through the year describing rituals and herbal uses for Druidic holidays and celebrations. She also provides the religious and historical background of the Druids before proceeding to the herbal information in chapters that progress through the seasons. Each of these chapters first sets the seasonal context, then presents a list of the herbs pertinent to that season.

Richard Bach in Illusions The above quote comes from a story which was not written by someone of Celtic blood or culture and the story itself is neither Christian nor pagan in its metaphysics yet the story's denouement still fits the Celtic experience when dealing with the spirituality and sentiments of people of other cultural dispositions Part of the Celtic disposition is a zest for life not some shallowly pleasant sort of happiness but an intensity of feeling in both delight and sorrow and a certain earthy holiness that pervades daily life rather than restricting itself to church or temple

Why would a Christian choose to become a Pagan?
Why would a well-educated Twentieth Century woman choose to practice a faith with roots in prehistory? Neo-Paganism is the fastest growing religion today. For the purposes of this article, I am referring to Paganism as practiced in northern Europe prior to the coming of Christianity and by those of the modern world who are trying to re-discover and re-establish spiritual links that have been surpressed for hundreds of years. My story is much like hundereds of other Neo-pagans: I grew up in a lower/middle-class family in a Christian country. I grew up hearing that the version of Christianity my parents practiced was the only true religion and that anyone who did not worship as we did was doomed to eternal torment. Futhermore, it was my duty as a "good" Christian to try to convince others of the error of their ways and get them to accept the "true" gospel.

Celtic Paganism MY Path
By Fraoch Donahue When people think of Pagans they think of "ungodly" atheists or savages sacrificing babies to "dark Gods." Or the more enlightened think it means the same as "Wiccans" and think we are all Wiccans who worship a Great Goddess and a Horned God. But Paganism covers a broad spectrum of Nature based, polytheistic religions, of which Wicca is but one. And Witchcraft might mean Wicca, but it might mean one of any number of unrelated magical practices as well. All of which are positive however. Satanism does NOT fit here at all, in any way, for it is not a Pagan religion. For years I've considered myself a "Witch" although now I tend to think of myself as more just "Pagan." I probably don't fit any of the standard images of a "Witch." I'm not Goth, although I have friends who are and think it's an attractive look and great life style for THEM, just not for me. I am certainly not "haggish" but give me a few decades. lol I guess I'm what you'd call "outdoorsy" or "earthy" and I even get called a "hippy" or a "granola" but I think I'm rather young for those labels (that would be my parents *s*). I favor bulky wool sweaters, jeans and hiking boots or sneakers most of the year, Indian cotton and gauze if not swimsuits in the short summers here. As you may guess from that, I'm not real nocturnal, I love sunshine. I suppose I do look like the "tree-hugger" I really am.

Why Wicca is Not Celtic Paganism
Version 2.5, ©1999 by Epona Perry.
Last modified November 15, 1999.
There are many out there who believe that Wicca and its related forms of NeoPagism are a type of Celtic Paganism (and vice versa), but this is simply not true. The following article is meant to be a comparison of Wicca and Celtic Paganism in order to demonstrate this, and to educate the public about Celtic Paganism. While Wicca certainly contains elements of Celtic mythology, folk magic and religious belief, its basic tenets and beliefs are radically different from those of Celtic Pagans. I intend only to show that these two religions are indeed different and distinct; this article is not meant as an attack against Wicca or those who are Wiccan. There is a list of the sources I used at the end of this article, and it is my hope that whether you agree or disagree with what I have to say, you will at least go check it out for yourself by reading some of the sources listed. I hope that this article will encourage the active pursuit of knowledge and spiritual development though knowledge.
