Geschichte

    Veterans for Peace, Inc. (VFP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization dedicated to the abolishment of war. VFP was founded in 1985 by ex-service members committed to sharing the horrors they experienced. We know the consequences of American foreign policy because once, at a time in our lives, so many of us carried it out. We find it sad that war seems so delightful, so often, to those that have no knowledge of it. We will proudly, and patriotically, continue to denounce war despite whatever misguided sense of euphoria supports it. Wage Peace! Veterans say No!

    A new book from the Bruderhof Communities: Seeking Peace
    Notes and Conversations along the Way Johann Christoph Arnold What is peace? How do we find it? Do we ever find it? What can we do to keep it - and to pass it on to others? These are questions Bruderhof pastor and author Johann Christoph Arnold tackles in Seeking Peace, a wonderfully down-to-earth look at what peace is, and isn't. As in his other books, Arnold draws from a wealth of resources - personal accounts and anecdotes - contributed by fellow Bruderhof community members and friends from around the globe, as well as from classic sources. The result is a read that both challenges and encourages, comforts and goads. The following chapter, entitled Wholeness, is reprinted from Seeking Peace Wholeness How can we not lose our souls

    BRUDERHOF COMMUNITY WITH ABOLITION MOVIN' Rejecting a Policy of Vengeance in the Name of the Victims A core argument by proponents of the death penalty is that it provides "justice" and "closure" to family members and friends of the murder victims and is necessary to assuage their grief. This proposition has a powerful emotional appeal. The American public has a natural well of sympathy for family members and friends of the victims. Some work to exploit this sympathy. The Journey Tours provide voices of murder victims family members who reject this policy of vengeance and are working to bring about an end to the death penalty. Spreading the message of forgiveness and love to hundreds of thousands of people in the United States and throughout the world, the Journey has three types of tours that can come to your area: Journey Annual Event One 17-day full participation tour hosted and sponsored by organizations in an individual state each year; Journey Feature Tour Groups of two or more speakers for scheduled duration; multiple tours can be conducted each year;

    An Analysis of Some Bruderhof Traits
    by Ramon Sender Barayon
    Where does the Bruderhof's need for absolute control over the individual come from? Erich Fromm, in his classic "Escape From Freedom," defines authoritarianism as "the tendency to give up the independence of one's own individual self and to fuse one's self with somebody or something outside of oneself in order to acquire the strength which the individual self is lacking." He equates authoritarianism with the sado- masochistic personality, and also points out that this personality type was typical of the lower middle class in Germany. One ex-member said to me, "Nazism did not just spring up out of nowhere. It was all there before Hitler, who just brought it to fruition. And it was in the Bruderhof character."
    In Eberhard Arnold's outspoken criticism of the National Socialist party, it is not the trait of blind obedience which he despises, but the blind obedience to Hitler. Generations of authoritarian parents had prepared the German people to follow unquestioningly wherever Hitler led them. "All authority comes from the Heavenly Father" became "All authority comes from Daddy" and finally, "All authority comes from the Fuhrer." Alice Miller, in her incomparable study of the "Poisonous Pedagogy" entitled "For Your Own Good," quotes Hitler's heir apparent, Rudolph Hess:
    "We note with pride that one man remains beyond
    all criticism, and that is the Fuhrer. This is because

    CBS Attacks the Bruderhof Communities
    On Thursday, March 27, the CBS program 48 Hours broadcast a slanderous attack on the Bruderhof communities. 48 Hours had been preparing a program on the Bruderhof communities for some time, but following the mass suicide of the Heaven's Gate group in San Diego, CBS took the material they had collected and used it produce a program on "cults." The result was that the Bruderhof communities were thrown in with Heaven's Gate, Jonestown, the Branch Dividians, and the Order of the Solar Temple. The fact that the Bruderhof communities maintain a web page on the Internet was used by Dan Rather in this special edition of 48 Hours that "will take a look at the darder side of the Web." It is fairly obvious that this attack on the Bruderhof communities comes as a result of their active support for Mumia Abu-Jamal. The Bruderhof communities don't begin to fit the establishment's own definition of a "cult" which usually boils down to 1) total isolation from the outside world and 2) total obedience to a maniacal leader. The Bruderhof communities are Christian communities in the Anabaptist tradition. The name Anabaptist goes back to the Protestant reformation, and was applied to dissenters who opposed infant baptism on the grounds that sacraments of the church could only be accepted knowingly by adults. Other religious communities in this tradition include the Mennonites and Amish. The Bruderhof communities attempt to emulate the communal life of the early Christian communities and oppose all forms of violence. They are very conservative on issues of sex and marriage. They are governed by community meetings and elected elders. They differ from other Anabaptist communities in that they do not isolate themselves from the modern world, and they hold property in common rather than as private property.

    Dear Friend, THE CASE OF MUMIA ABU-JAMAL You may have heard from us previously about the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, an outstanding black journalist who has been on death row in Pennsylvania USA since 1982 and was sentenced to die by lethal injection on 17 August 1995. Hopefully you have also heard that Mumia was granted an indefinite stay of execution on 7 August, just ten days prior to his appointment with death. The stay came suddenly- to the surprise and amazement of many. Its announcement was followed by an outpouring of great joy. Many have worked untiringly in support of Mumia. The stay was a limited victory, yet it was a victory all the same. IT IS CLEAR THAT INTERNATIONAL CONCERN AND AWARENESS ABOUT MUMIA'S CASE WAS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE GRANTING OF THE STAY. Our hope is that this international activity will continue and grow in the weeks and months to come. Mumia's recent hearing in the Philadelphia court of Judge Albert Sabo was very painful for us as well as all those who are concerned for Mumia. Some of our brothers and sisters were present in the court for each of the days of the hearing. We were stunned by the coldness and hardness of heart directed toward Mumia, those trying to defend him and his supporters in general. This first hand experience has galvanised our feelings about this particular case as well as about the death penalty in general. We feel all the more committed to work for the eternal abolition of the death penalty. Please join us!

Comics Bruderhof suit targets newsletter By PAUL BROOKS Staff Writer KINGSTON - The Bruderhof community has filed a $15.5 million lawsuit its leaders say is aimed at stopping harassment. The defendants say the suit tries to stifle and intimidate critics of the religious group. The lawsuit is about ''efforts to discredit us and paint us as a cult,'' said Christian Domer, a leader of the religious community which has several hundred members in each of its Rifton and Pleasant View communities in Esopus. The lawsuit was filed in July in Manhattan Supreme Court and was recently transferred to federal court. It is against Ramon Sender and the Peregrine Foundation in San Francisco. Sender, a former Bruderhof member whose wife still lives in the Rifton Bruderhof community, publishes a newsletter for former Bruderhof community members and others. The lawsuit also targets Julius Rubin, a sociology professor in Connecticut who has written a book about the Bruderhof, and Blair Purcell. Both men are connected with the newsletter. It charges them with a pattern of harassment through false statements, saying among other things that the Bruderhof failed to report sexual abuse of children.

By Anuradha Raghunathan The Times Herald-Record araghunathan@th-record.com Members of the Bruderhof community yesterday broke their silence, denying charges that they are preventing former members from visiting their families who have remained with the religious community. Bruderhof leaders, reeling from recent allegations, said a custody case brought against three women in the community was part of a campaign orchestrated by former Bruderhof members who have personal vendettas against current community members. Three Nigerian men are seeking custody of their children in Ulster County Family Court. These men and others have charged that they were deliberately prevented from seeing their children, that telephone calls were not passed on and that visitation was denied. "We do not have a policy against visitation," Bruderhof Communities President Christian Domer said yesterday. "The fathers are frustrated that the mothers do not want to have contact with them, and they are suggesting that the Bruderhof is imposing it on them. This is ludicrous."
