The Bruderhof as we know it today is an international movement of Christian communities. It was founded in Germany in 1920 by Eberhard Arnold and a handful of likeminded friends. The Bruderhof is not a religion; rather, it is a gathering place for people (men and women of all ages, single or married) serious about communal living in the context of the Christian faith The Bruderhof is patterned after the radical Christian communities of the sixteenth-century Anabaptists and the "early Christians" of the first century. Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" forms the basis for our communal life. Bruderhof members make a life commitment to pacifism, prayer, and fellowship. North America has seen an explosion of new area codes over the last seven years, fueled by increased demand for numbers (modems, fax, wireless) and competition in local telephone service. To meet this growing demand for numbers, the North American Numbering Plan was amended in 1995 to permit area codes with middle digits other than or 1. As a result, millions of phone numbers have moved to new area codes in recent years. This site contains a collection of lists of telephone exchanges involved in area code splits. Each entry below links you to a detailed list of telephone exchange codes (NXX) which will be, or have already been, moved to a new area code (NPA). This is not intended to be a master list of all area codes, or even of all new area codes. I generally do not include overlays , where a new area code is introduced which covers the same area as an existing area code. In such cases, no telephone numbers change. I have listed a few of the more confusing multiple overlays and combination split/overlays, though they may not exactly fit the criteria of number changes.

Plough.com has closed. On November 15, 2002 Plough.com exited the Information Superhighway. You could say we've gone back to the furrow. What's going on? It's simple: the Bruderhof , the intentional community movement behind Plough, is growing in many directions - and community members who were working at Plough were needed for other tasks. This means we had to radically prune our publishing work. All is not lost, however. Many of your favorite features will be continued:

The community, which acquired the name of its charismatic leader, Jakob Hutter (tortured and burned as a heretic in 1536), still survives, mostly in the western sections of the United States and Canada with a population of about 20,000. In colonies of 60 to 150 persons, they operate collective farms ( Bruderhof ) and, not unlike the Old Order Amish, remain aloof from outside society, taking no part in politics. Children are educated inside the colony until age 14 or until a minimum age decreed by state or province.

Excerpts from A Joyful Pilgrimage , Emmy Arnold's Memoir The Bruderhof Website
The Plough Publishing House

Emmy Arnold was the cofounder of the Bruderhof Communities. She and her husband, Eberhard, began their Christian community in 1920, in their native Germany, after reading Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and determining his words were meant for today as much as for two thousand years ago. Today, the Bruderhof (the name translates as "place of brothers") is a Christian community movement with over two thousand members on three continents. Members still adhere to the Arnold's original vision for a life of radical Christianity where nonviolence, service to others, prayer, and fellowship are a natural part of every day. In this chapter from her memoir, A Joyful Pilgrimage (Plough 1999), Emmy Arnold recounts the first days of the Bruderhof's beginnings, in the rural village of Sannerz, Germany.
Beginning at Sannerz
Our relationship with the Furche Publishing House was becoming increasingly difficult. Articles and manuscripts that we and our friends found challenging and suitable for publication were not appreciated (and even turned down) by people in influential positions, and the resulting tensions frustrated us at a time when we felt the need around us and the Spirit calling us to action. Just at this juncture, friends at Schlüchtern asked Eberhard if he would be willing to take charge of a new publishing house they were planning to start, the Neuwerk Verlag.

The Bruderhof Communities:
Some experiences, observations and resources.
by Wayne and Betty Chesley We lived at the Bruderhof communities for a little less than two years. We had visited them regularly for several years before we made a "leap of faith", sold off most of our belongings, terminated my career, and committed ourselves to "The Life". We joined the Bruderhof thinking that we had found a church that was fully living out the teachings of the New Testament. That was the challenge often made to us by Bruderhof friends, "If you can find a group that is living more in accordance with the New Testament then tell us so that we can join it too." We tried to adapt ourselves to a different way of living out the scriptures, but at some point we just could not go along with what we saw were clear violations of the teachings of Jesus, teachings that were fundamental to the Bruderhof's claims about itself. We know how hard it is for people outside of the Bruderhof to believe the shocking stories that come from it's sharpest (and even it's gentlest) critics. And it is easy to dismiss ex-members criticisms (we know, we did it too) as stemming from the bitterness that comes from disillusionment and failure. So we know that what we have written and posted will be easily disregarded of by some. But we hope the serious seeker will consider what we present here.

Journey Toward Wholeness Joining the Bruderhof, a Christian Community
Charles E. Moore
Ten years ago, my wife and I packed up our bags to join a Christian community, the Bruderhof a fellowship of men, women, and children who live, work, and share a common purse and a common life together. By "community" I mean a gathered life involving a total commitment to each other. Our homes, work place, community center, and school are all together in one geographic space. We possess no private property and share daily life together. Why would I, a seminary professor, and my wife, a high school teacher, drop everything and move across the country to join the Bruderhof, a Christian community? We were both well on our way to a fulfilling and fruitful life of meaningful work. So why the change? In short, because we were living a slow death of gradual disintegration. As for myself, the explosive energy of my youth had fast become dissipated, not because of reckless living, but as a result of obsessively attempting too much and of trying to hold everything together. It was a meltdown of my own choosing. I was obsessed with trying hard, being good, meeting needs, pleasing God, and doing the right thing. There were so many good causes to join, so much knowledge to master, so many people to meet, so many relationships to build, so many obligations to fulfill, and so many opportunities to explore. But as I plunged into the whirlwind of possibility, I became systematically fragmented. Peace of heart slipped away, peace of life was lost.

In his latest book, Endangered: Your Child in a Hostile World , author Johann Christoph Arnold contends that rule-breaking children make the most self-reliant and independent adults. He should know - Arnold, who lives at the Bruderhof , a Christian community where members seek to put their faith in action through service to others, prayer, and fellowship, is a pastor and youth counsellor with years of experience. In Endangered, he voices his concern for a culture that is fast alienating - if not annihilating - its own children and young people. "In Praise of Black Sheep" is a chapter from Endangered. Visit www.plough.com for more. There's a black sheep in every flock, and there are few of us who don't know one, or didn't know one as a child. Every family, every class, has one: that brother or sister, boy or girl, who's always in trouble, who's prone to stretch limits or take things "too far," who's embarrassingly honest, who never fits in. It's that child over whom every teacher puzzles longest and every parent loses the most sleep.

Matt's story is the focus of a new book by Bruderhof author Daniel Hallock, Six Months to Live (Plough 2001). While it's true that cancer stories are hardly a rarity these days, this stirring account is a departure from the norm. Avoiding clichés ("Live every minute to the full." "Embrace life."), Six Months to Live instead explores the harsh reality of having to face one's mortality - and with it, the demons of uncertainty and fear. It does so with unusual intimacy and immediacy, by drawing on interviews with Matt's wife, parents, doctors, and friends, and on e-mails between Matt and others.
Most of us see the death of another person as something negative - something that unsettles us, interrupts our daily life, and throws our plans awry.

In 1920, radical Christian Eberhard Arnold founded the Bruderhof in war-torn Germany.
Today, nine Bruderhof communities - six in the eastern United States, two in England and one in Australia - are home to more than 3,000 members.
The basis of Bruderhof life is the Bible's New Testament teachings on love of neighbor, nonviolence, mutual service and faithfulness in marriage. The Bruderhof faith also encourages its members to maintain a childlike spirit.

Bruderhof History It is probably because of the presence of David Hofer and Michael Waldner that no one is taken to concentration camp. 6. Aliens in England?
The Cotswold Bruderhof (1936 - 1941)

It is evident that the Bruderhof will not last much longer in Germany. Neither will the tiny principality of Liechtenstein be strong enough to withstand Hitler. Arnold and Gladys Mason, a newly married couple who have joined the Bruderhof from England, find a piece of property in England's Cotswolds-the new Cotswold Bruderhof. England is preparing for war with Germany. Many of England's youth, however, have joined the "Peace Pledge Union," vowing to resist war. [Harry's story] Many of these young people find their way to the Bruderhof. During the four years of the Cotswold Bruderhof's existence, it doubles in size to about 350 members. February 1937
