The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren - Prague 10 Strašnice
A few Words about the Church
The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren is a Christian church containing traditions of Czech and European reformation, founded in 1918 by the connection of two protestant currents: the Lutheran and the Calvin one. It is a church based on testimony of the Bible, first of all on the gospel. Though some of its traditions go back up to the 15th century, it tries to be a modern church dealing with up-to-date world’s problems. Its organization is formed by principles of democracy. Since its foundation in 1930 until the summer 2001, the congregational house hadn’t been reconstructed and so its facade remained the same. Original colors couldn’t been recognized any longer, the house became one of gray buildings in a gray street for many years. Just a copper chalice with the Bible at the front wall announced the difference from other houses – but even this was damaged and hard to be noticed. There was a need for reconstruction for a long time, but first for inside rooms and for the roof of the assembly hall. Nowadays the facade is brand new with new front doors and with reconstructed chalice above them. In the opposite of the original look, remained on photographs, the new surface has changed both colors and a few of “important details”. It is not the end of itself. The author of the design, Ondøej Smolík, an architecture student, says:

Brethren Volunteer Service is a program of the Church of the Brethren. BVS has been a major program in this Christian denomination since 1948. We invite you to participate in the BVS family and a new adventure in service. BVS will endeavor to place you in a project where your skills are used and the need is greatest. We expect your service to contribute to the goals stated above. We see BVS as sharing God's love through acts of service. The art of serving is a process of both giving and receiving. We need to be able to freely give of ourselves and freely receive what others can offer and teach us. It is our hope that this art will move beyond a one- to two-year program and will become a lifestyle that continues after BVS. A part of preparation for your service is participation in a 10-day to three week orientation unit. With this group of 10 to 30 people, you will examine issues related to service, personal and spiritual growth, group living, adjustment to new situations, living simply, and cross-cultural sensitivity. Growing out of the relationships and community spirit developed during the orientation, unit members can provide mutual support for each other. We believe that your service will be more meaningful and of greater value to others and to yourself if you seek to nurture your faith pilgrimage. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in a faith community as you serve in Brethren Volunteer Service.

Piracy
Ships Flags Weapons ... E-Mail
~ Over the centuries, pirates have been portrayed as both admirable rogues and bloodthirsty devils. This site is about the reality, myth, and romance of those adventurous souls mainly from the Golden Age of Piracy. Which refers to a time around the late 17th to early 18th centuries. It contains information regarding pirate facts and fiction, with biographies of some of the most famous pirates from this era. You will also find pages devoted to piracy in general, pirate ships, flags, weapons, treasure, art and wenches. There is a movie list for swashbuckler fans, and even a dictionary of nautical terms for all ye scurvy landlubbers as well.
~ In the Ports O'Call area we have a list of links to most of our favorite seafarin' and pirate related websites. Many of these sites were used as sources of information and inspiration on the subject. Lately we have received many e-mail requests from buggers looking to buy various pirate items. So at the bottom section of Ports O'Call we added links to websites that sell pirate and nautical plunder. Buyer beware.. we are not associated in any way with those smugglers websites and have no control over their bloody business practices.
~ We have also included a page about sea shanties. These were the work songs used on many of the large sailing ships in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the majority of these were used after the Golden Age of Piracy, some are based on songs of that time period. They have been added to give you a sense of life aboard a tall sailing vessel. Check back with us often as we will be building on and update this site frequently. In the meantime gather round a keg of rum and enjoy your stay.. but you better keep a weather eye open.. for there be treacherous waters ahead.. watch your step around here matey.. least ye meet yer doom.

    Author: Shawn Abigail
    October 2001
Version 1.9 This Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ) concentrates on the so called "Open Brethren" since this is the background of the author. However, an attempt is made to explain some of the positions of "Closed and Exclusive Brethren". This FAQ should not in any way be considered to be an authoritative document representing the view of any local church or any individual (including the author). At almost every point in this FAQ, you will find Brethren churches that will disagree or differ. Variation is even greater between different countries. The author could probably best be described as from the traditional end of the open Brethren in North America. Suggestions and corrections should be emailed to: Shawn Abigail This FAQ now has an official home page! You can see it at: Quite a number of brothers have sent me email with suggestions and additions. I would like to thank all who have helped build this FAQ.

    Brethren Groups
is a document that will acquaint you with a historical, non-theological outline of the several denominations using the word Brethren in their label, and hopefully give you an overview of how we all fit together. One common denominator which usually holds true for most Brethren groups is that each progenitive body originated in central Europe under the influence of Anabaptism or Pietism, during the Fifteenth to Eighteenth centuries. There are so many Christian denominations and sub-groups using the term Brethren, that questions frequently arise over their relationship with each other.
    Fellowship of Brethren Genealogists
endeavor to foster communication among persons tracing the same Brethren ancestral lines, generate enthusiastic research in Brethren genealogy, and encourage the preservation of materials relating to the history and genealogy. They publish a quarterly newsletter called Brethren Roots which contains articles, genealogical listings, valuable research, cemetery records, book reviews, deaths and marriages from 19th century Brethren publications, queries and other timely items of interest. The newsletter is free to members of the Fellowship, and membership is open to anyone for ten dollars ($10) per calendar year. Contact administrator Ron McAdams for details on how to subscribe. This homepage also includes instructions for accessing material from the Brethren Historical Library and Archives (BHLA) at Elgin, attending workshops, the annual Fellowship meeting, and coordinating efforts with other Brethren family researchers.

(MORAVIAN BRETHREN, or UNITAS FRATRUM). DEFINITION AND DOCTRINAL POSITION "Bohemian Brethren" and "Moravian Brethren" are the current popular designation of the Unitas Fratrum founded in Bohemia in 1457, renewed by Count Zinzendorf in 1722, and still active in our own day. Placing life before creeds, the Moravian Church seeks "to exemplify the living Church of Christ constituted or regenerated men and women, while it affords a common meeting-point for Christians who apprehend dogmas variously". Personal faith in the crucified Saviour constitutes the chief foundation for the fellowship thus established. Scripture is the only rule of faith, but "nothing is posited as to the mode of inspiration, for this partakes of the mysteries which it has not pleased God to reveal". The Trinity, the Fall, Original Sin, and "Total Depravity" are admitted, but "discussion about them is shunned". The Love of God infra in regard to Zinzendorf), Baptism and the Lord's Supper as the only sacraments, and the common Christian eschatology : Resurrection, Judgment, Heaven
