Baptist Union
The Baptists were founded by an English refugee, John Smyth, in Amstrerdam in 1609. Thomas Hewlys founded the first Baptist church in England in 1612, in Newgate Street, London. They believed in adult baptism. They split into various factions with differing beliefs - the General Baptists and the Particular (or Strict) Baptists formed in 1633. The General Baptists split into the New Connexion and Old Connexion, and the latter became Unitarians. A Baptist Union in 1813 attempted to bring about co-operation between the divisions. The Particular Baptists and the New Connexion united in 1891 to form the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland. Baptists recorded the births of children and the baptism of adults. Few Baptist records survive from before 1688. There are many registers of births, baptisms and burials, but very few marriages were recorded before 1754. After 1754 Baptists had to marry in Anglican churches and so should be recorded in their registers. Baptist marriages became legal again in 1837 if a civil registrar was in attendance. As with other non-conformist registers, those of the Baptists up to 1837 were deposited with the Registrar General and are now in the PRO at the Family Records Centre. Some pre-1837 registers were not surrendered. These and post-1837 registers are held at County Records Offices, churches, archives of the Baptist associations and Baptist Theological Colleges, or at the following archives:

Baptist Church
Doctrines Baptists do not have any creeds or confessions of faith which have binding authority. However, there are six underlying principles which govern Baptist belief.
  • The Bible alone is a sufficient and authoritative guide to faith.
  • Baptism is only undertaken by believers accompanied by a profession of faith.
  • Only convinced Christians should belong to the church.
  • Each member of the church has equal say in the running of the church, and, therefore, the minister does not have any special priestly authority.
  • Each local church is autonomous.
  • Church and state are separate. Behind this principle lies the belief that the state should guarantee freedom of belief. History
The Baptist church grew steadily during the first half of the17th century. However, the restoration of the British monarchy in 1660 led to renewed persecution of dissenting churches. During this time the Baptist preacher John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress, spent 12 years in prison.
The 18th century saw renewed growth in the church. In 1792 the English Baptist Missionary Society was organised under the leadership of William Carey, planting Baptist churches in India and other parts of Asia.

Baptist Union of Great Britain Announces Reforms
Taken from "Baptist Times" January 3, 2002

Through a process that began 10 years ago as the result of stagnant growth within the Baptist Union of Great Britain, Revd David Coffey, general secretary of the union, has announced broad changes and a new beginning for the organization. The reform is a result of a 10-year process that started during the 'ferment' of the early 1990's examination of the churches' numerical and spiritual decline. Part of the process was a Denominational Consultation held in Swanwick, Derbyshire, where guest representatives of the Baptist family joined Baptist Union Council members for a weekend conference. Since this conference, baptism figures and church plantings have been on the rise, as well as attendance growth within the churches.

CLIFFORD, JOHN (16 October 1836, Sawley, England-20 November 1923, London, England). Education: Graduate, Midland Baptist College, 1858; University of London, 1866. Career: Pastor, Praed Street Baptist Church, London, 1858-1923; president. Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland, 1888-1899; president. Baptist World Alliance, 1905-11. John Clifford rose from a twelve hour per day child apprenticeship in a large factory through university exams in arts, science, and law to outstanding leadership in the Baptist Christian community. Among his fellow Baptists he was considered a progressive influence theologically. Socially, he frequently sided with radical movements, as evidenced by his membership in the Fabian Society. Politically, he exercised great influence on several pieces of legislation relating to education; he was a known supporter of David Lloyd George. In many ways, Clifford was the father of social Christianity among Free Churchmen in Great Britain. He used his Baptist conviction of religious liberty to advance his feeling that the message of Christ should be interpreted in light of growing knowledge and experience. He opposed, for instance the "living-in" system of apprentices and later the atrocities perpetuated by the Belgians upon the Congo peoples. In 1885 his church established a home for unemployed women, and for more than thirty years he led in the temperance crusade to close public houses where neighborhood sentiment was in strong opposition.

    MISSION EXECUTIVE
    A Vision for the Environment
    INTRODUCTION

In March 1998, the Council of the Baptist Union of Great Britain accepted the report Five Core Values for a Gospel People. This report affirmed, among other principles, that we are called to be:
    • a prophetic community
confronting injustice and challenging human concepts of power, wealth, status and security; an inclusive community
identifying with those who are rejected, deprived and powerless; a sacrificial community
seeking to reflect the generous, life-giving nature of God; a missionary community
demonstrating God's healing and forgiving love; a worshipping community
exploring and expressing what it means to live together as the people of God, obeying his Word and following Christ in the whole of daily life.
In seeking to establish the nature of these core values in our churches and community, we set down a pattern of action at various levels. These included:

Home Mission nationally still faces a deficit of around £300,000 and it has been necessary to ask some churches and projects to accept cuts in their grants in 2003. Please pray for the ministers, churches and projects affected and for the staff at Didcot trying to get stretch the funds available in a just and appropriate way.
We give thanks to God for the wealth He has put at our disposal and offer Him these funds in the precious Name of Jesus. Amen. Thought for the Month "... God comes to us unsolicited, in the free self-giving of Christ, seeking the lost when we didn't even know we needed to be found..." Click
