41. Leonard Gross Background Dynamics Of Amish Movement
The perspective of amishman Eli E. Gingerich on the amish essence, its historicaland theological roots.. Background Dynamics of the amish Movement
http://www.goshen.edu/~lonhs/GCPUBLICATIONS/GROSS.html
Background Dynamics of the Amish Movement:
Pivotal Individuals within the Swiss Brethren Division of the 1690s; and The Question of Reformed (Calvinist) Influence by Leonard Gross What I hope to do first in this essay is to describe in a nutshell, from one Old Order Amish minister's point of view, what it means to be Amish, both in spirit and in substance. I then hope, secondly, to trace, within the tides of history, the sources of the Amish faith and life. And thirdly, I would like to hint at some of the developments, from the 1690s or so, up to around 1720, where I attempt to weigh the significance of some of the major leaders who helped determine the outcomes of the great Swiss Brethren Division of the 1690s. (And indeed, it was the great Swiss Brethren and not only an Amish Division!) Here is a quick overview of my findings: Certain Low Country Mennonite doctrines from the era of Menno Simons and Dirk Philips were picked up by certain Swiss Brethren Anabaptist groups, probably via the ongoing series of Anabaptist conferences held in the Strasbourg area. Certain of these doctrines slowly found acceptance especially among some Alsatian Swiss Brethren. These very doctrines were then formally promoted through the publication of Menno Simons' Fundamentbuch Foundation Book ) in 1575, and of the Dordrecht Confession in 1664 (both publications issued in German translation). Some Swiss Brethren accepted these new doctrines; other Swiss Brethren rejected these new doctrines, believing them to clash with traditional Swiss Brethren views on the nature of the church, on the nature of congregational discipline, and on the nature of leadership and authority within the church.

Each year, visitors from around the world journey to Pennsylvania's Amish, or "Pennsylvania Dutch," Country to spend a few hours, or a few days, exploring the natural beauty of our farmlands, the many nearby historic sites and the numerous family oriented attractions and theme parks that dot the roadside. The area's family style and smorgasbord restaurants specializing in Pennsylvania Dutch cooking seem to provide the energy for further investigating the surprisingly long list of things to do and see.
Certainly, curiosity related to our Amish community attracts many. Thoughts of a simpler time and place abound as we witness homes without electricity and transportation limited to the horse and buggy. The Amish Experience at Plain & Fancy Farm is the one Lancaster County destination where the very best reasons for a Penn Dutch vacation can be found... Bus tours of the surrounding Amish farmlands, a mouth watering all-you-can-eat family style meal, tours of a designated "Heritage Site" Old Order Amish House and the spectacular F/X Theater production of "Jacob's Choice".

Welcome!
These authentic handcrafted Amish baskets enhance every room of the house and make great gifts too!! All of our beautiful baskets are handmade by an Amish family here in Southwest Wisconsin. The entire family works together. Each member of the Amish family has a designated job to do. The base of the basket is made of birch plywood. The weaving material is bamboo. The handles are either oak or ash (a few are leather), and the lids are lunan. The bamboo reeds are soaked first, so they can be weaved. Handles are put into boiling water for 10 to 20 minutes, and then put on a jig or mold, and clamped and baked for a day so they retain their shape. The stain used is 3 parts linseed oil and 5 parts stain. They are mixed together in a large tub and the baskets are dipped in the mixture. They are then set aside to dry. Each basket is signed and dated by the family.
Imagine all the time and craftsmanship put into each one of these beautiful handmade baskets! The supreme craftsmanship and quality for which the Amish are well-known is exhibited in each and every basket we sell! All baskets come in your choice of three beautiful colors: Blue and Burgundy Green and Burgundy Natural

53. Rosannadanna Of The Amish
Futuristic humorous writing featuring an amish lawyer and her tales.
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~rbender/rosanna.html
Rosannadanna of the Amish
umi ga kikoeru This is the saga of an Amish/Mennonite lawyer in Manhattan in the year 174 AR After the Rapture. At the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, 1999 AD, the night on which Elvis was universally expected to return to this earth, all the people huddled around their TV sets in every part of the globe instantly and mysteriously vanished.
Since over 99% of the world's population had disappeared, the Amish were free to expand their families and their farms as far as they liked, and had sought out new territories to colonize.
Yoney Hochstetler, a Pennsylvania Amish bishop with an attitude who had wryly coined the term "After the Rapture" and devised a new calendar, led a group of Amish settlers to the site of the former New York City, where they discovered to their surprise that some of the best farming land on earth was to be found in the Bronx.
Hochstetler returned to Lancaster County, which was in the throes of a crisis engendered by the overproduction of dung by the expanded farm animal and Amish population explosions. He eventually convinced almost all of the North American Amish to join the new colony in New York. While most members of the community welcomed the chance to migrate as a breath of fresh air, a few of the more recalcitrant and retentive brethren stayed behind. Vowing that all that good hot dung should not chust go to waste, they promised to join the colony in New York when they had perfected a means to harness its power as more than chust fertilizer.

Ice cream dry mix for commercial and home use, sold in bulk.
http://www.amishmaid.com
Amish~Maid Home Products Recipe's Consessions ... Dry Mix and Sample Information The Reason
The mix I sell is intended for comercial use and can be made using comercial equipment without sacrificing taste. In eleven years of retail ice cream concession, the number one question from the consumer was, "Why can't we get this product other than once a year when you're at the show?" This is what encouraged me to develop a dry mix for ice cream, to make it easier for the consumer to have a better product. The Roots
Amish~Maid Homemade Ice Cream was founded in 1989 by Joe E. Hostetler, I was born and raised horse and buggy Amish on the farm. My recipie was originally made by my mother. In the Hostetler home there was(is) only one way to cook, and that was the old fashion way. I remember very well my mother cooking on a wood fired stove and there was only one way we would have ice cream. My mother would make the ice cream mix from scratch and my father, brothers, and me would freeze the mix with an old white mountain ice cream freezer using ice and salt.
The Product
Amish~Maid Dry Ice Cream Mix in chocolate and vanilla flavoring, can be used to make; ice cream, custard, and low fat ice creams. Fruit can also be added to enhance the treat of our vanilla mix. Sample sizes are available for retailers who would like to try our products.

Cultural Diversity: Eating in America
Amish
HYG-5251-95
Patricia Shenberger The Amish are often referred to as the plain people, known for their unadorned style of dress, horse-drawn vehicles and family-centered lifestyle. A strong faith in God and church traditions determine their ways. Ohio has the largest settlement of Amish in the United States; Pennsylvania ranks second and Indiana ranks third. The largest communities in Ohio are in Holmes, Wayne, Ashland and Geauga counties. Each of the groups within the Amish culture-Old Order Amish, New Order Amish, Mennonite, Beachy Amish, "Swiss" Mennonites, or Swartzentruber Amish, for example-have their own set of rules about what is acceptable from the world around them.
Food Habits and Their Relationship to Dietary Guidelines
Eating habits vary among the Amish depending on where they live, the type of work they do, and the mode of transportation they use. Traditionally the Amish community has been farm based with families growing or raising most of their own food and traveling by horse and buggy. This pattern is changing in urban areas, however, because of the scarcity of land and hazards of horse-and-buggy travel. Many Amish are leaving their farms, and gardens are becoming smaller. Most Amish, especially those who still tend large gardens and orchards, eat a variety of foods. Because much of their work is physically demanding, many are not concerned about reducing the amount of fat in their diets. Those with access to motorized transportation buy more high-fat snack foods and eat out in restaurants more often than those who travel by horse and buggy.
