The Origin of the Word Agnostic
by Bill Young
There is little doubt that Thomas Henry Huxley invented the word agnostic in the Spring of 1869. However, there is conflicting evidence about when this was and what it originally meant. According to R. H. Hutton, as published in the New English Dictionary , Huxley first used the word agnostic at a party at James Knowles's house on Clapham Common prior to the formation of the Metaphysical Society. Hutton also said, "He [Huxley] took it from St. Paul's mention of the altar to 'the Unknown God'." ( New English Dictionary edited by James A. H. Murray. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1888, p. 86.) Huxley, on the other hand, wrote in "Agnosticism" published in The Nineteenth Century in February 1889 that he invented it as a label for himself at the Metaphysical Society, although he didn't say when. He also said, "It [agnostic] came into my head as suggestively antithetic to the 'gnostic' of Church history, who professed to know so much about the very things of which I was ignorant...." (Huxley, Thomas Henry. "Agnosticism" The Nineteenth Century . February, 1889, p. 183.)

To Question is the Answer
Challenge supernaturalism in all its forms, from religion to ouija boards " Man is certainly stark mad; he cannot make a worm, yet he will make gods by the dozen." Michel de Montaigne James A. Haught "Religion is all bunk." Thomas Edison
Welcome to a quest for mental honesty. I'm an old newspaper editor who has spent nearly half a century chronicling social struggles and cultural tides. Personally, I've waged a long crusade for rational, scientific thinking as an antidote for harmful supernaturalism. I've written five books and many magazine articles against religion, astrology, mysticism, psychic claims, cults, "New Agery," fundamentalism, and other magical beliefs. Although billions of people pray to invisible gods, there's no actual evidence of deities and devils, heavens and hells, spirits and prophecies, etc. They're just imaginary, as far as a sincere inquirer can tell. So, to me, the only honest viewpoint is the humanist one, which doubts the supernatural and focuses on improving human life. This web site contains some of my skeptical pieces plus others on science, sailing, sex, serenity, the joy of nature, and the meaning of life (or lack thereof). You're free to read, download, print out, circulate or reprint any of these materials.

Thursday, April 18, 2002 I first posted this "testimony" to the web on July 27, 2001. Below is the original wording I used when I made the hard decision to go public with my loss of faith. The intervening months have only solidified my chosen course and I see the need to add to the narrative from time to time. Below the original post you are welcome to read occasionally updated addenda to my ever developing world view. Thanks for your interest! If you too have found Christianity specifically, or religion generally, to be less than satisfying for any reason, please consider posting your own "testimony" to this site by clicking here , or emailing me at Webmaster@ExChrisitan.Net"
I
T he reason for this brief essay is to share my testimony of my personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and my repentance from that relationship. What follows will undoubtedly unnerve some of my closer associates and may even alienate some of my good friends. I have absolutely no desire to alienate anyone since I have already spent years as a zealous evangelical Christian alienating dozens and dozens of people in the name of Christ. However, it is only fair to those who know me to allow them to understand where I am coming from now.

T he very next morning, I started carrying a small new testament to school with me. I was in the sixth grade, reading a KJV, and doing my best to understand what I could from it’s inspired pages. I began attending church that week, and became a regular customer at the local Christian Book Store. My paper route wages and tips found investment in books and comic book tracts by Jack Chick, which I read and distributed with a vengeance.

My view on atheism and agnosticism
See also my Atheism page
What is Atheism?
Atheism is often looked upon as denying god. This is not completely true. Basically atheism (a=lack of, theism=belief in gods) is only lack of belief in a god godess or gods. There are basically two different views of atheism ( Webster lists sub-groups), weak and strong atheism. (An introduction to atheism)
Weak atheism is a negation: "I don't believe that it is true that god exists"
Strong atheism is a positive claim: "I believe that it is true that god does not exist" Most people don't know this, and weak atheists often call themselves agnostics, which is a different view. Agnosticism (a=lack of, gnosis=knowledge) concerns lack of knowledge, but the popular view is that agnosticism deals with belief. That someone doesn't know if he believes or not. But how can anyone who doesn't believe not be defined as a weak atheist? The term agnosticism was originally defined by TH Huxley, from Acts where an inscription says "To the unknown God", and was a view implicite accepting god's existence:
God is, and god is unknown.

49. What Is An Agnostic?
Bertrand Russell on agnosticism
http://www.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/humftp/E-text/Russell/agnostic.htm
What is an Agnostic?
Bertrand Russell
What Is an agnostic?
An agnostic thinks it impossible to know the truth in matters such as God and the future life with which Christianity and other religions are concerned. Or, if not impossible, at least impossible at the present time.
Are agnostics atheists?
No. An atheist, like a Christian, holds that we can know whether or not there is a God. The Christian holds that we can know there is a God; the atheist, that we can know there is not. The Agnostic suspends judgment, saying that there are not sufficient grounds either for affirmation or for denial. At the same time, an Agnostic may hold that the existence of God, though not impossible, is very improbable; he may even hold it so improbable that it is not worth considering in practice. In that case, he is not far removed from atheism. His attitude may be that which a careful philosopher would have towards the gods of ancient Greece. If I were asked to prove that Zeus and Poseidon and Hera and the rest of the Olympians do not exist, I should be at a loss to find conclusive arguments. An Agnostic may think the Christian God as improbable as the Olympians; in that case, he is, for practical purposes, at one with the atheists.
Since you deny `God's Law', what authority do you accept as a guide to conduct?

Agnosticism is seen as a refuge for those who cannot make up their minds. Agnosticism in itself is a legitimate end position in religious belief. We do not know because we cannot know. The ultimate truth about the existence of a Supreme Being is unknowable. Recognizing this, we can free ourselves from a fruitless search and indeed, no longer care about answering the question. Agnosticism is the only truly defensible argument, of course, ... but it does not seem as practical, or as beneficial as any of the other "Reality" Gods of pantheism or deism. Agnosticism is more of a stopping place for discussion ... whereas S. Pantheism and Deism add poetic expression to our scientific discoveries. Although this is now the case with regard to a discussion of agnosticism, the word wasn't coined to mean this. Huxley's biography is very illuminating on this issue. The word "scientist" wasn't popular in Huxley's day. What he meant by "agnostic" is essentially what we mean by "scientist". An agnostic, to Huxley, wasn't really a person who stopped making inquiries into the higher questions because the knowledge couldn't be found. An agnostic was a person who was willing to seek knowledge through scientific means rather than resort to faith to make so called claims of knowledge. In this sense, I think modern freethinkers would all proudly call themselves agnostic. As to Pantheism, I think

AGNOSTICISM
AGNOSTICISM. The term " agnostic" was invented by Huxley in 1869 to describe the philosophical and religious attitude of those who hold that we can have scientific or real AGNOSTICISM " I neither affirm nordenythe immortality of man. I see no reason for believing it, but, on the other hand, I have no means of disproving it. I have no a priori objections to the doctrine. No man who has to deal daily and hourly with nature can trouble himself about a priori difficulties. Give me such evidence as would justify me in believing in anything else, and I will believe that. Why should I not? It is not half so wonderful as the conservation of force or the indestructibility of matter. . . . " It is no use to talk to me of analogies and probabilities. I know what I mean when I say I believe in the law of the inverse squares, and I will not rest my life and my hopes upon weaker convictions. . . . " That my personality is the surest thing I know may be true. But the attempt to conceive what it is leads me into mere verbal subtleties. I have champed up all that chaff about the ego and the non-ego, noumena and phenomena, and all the rest of it, too often not to know that in attempting even to think of these questions, the human intellect flounders at once out of its depth." Of the origin of the name " agnostic " to cover this attitude, Huxley gave (Coll. Ess. v. pp. 237-239) the following account:—
