Agnostisism
The word agnost means `not knowing'. An agnost is someone saying that he does not know, and is usually used in the context of knowledge about God, or the nature of reality. Agnosticism is the believe that it is impossible to know certain things for sure. There are different reasons for which one does not know, and for this reason we make a differnence between weak and strong agnostism.
Weak agnosticism
A weak agnost simple claims that he does not know whether God exists. This means that he does not exclude the possibility of knowing whether God exists.
Strong agnosticism
Strong agnoticism claims that it is impossible to know whether God exists. Somehow this is very strong claim, as it requires knowledge about reality to know this for sure. For this reason, some people hold the position that strong agnosticism is self-defeating. A quote from An introduction to Atheism
The term 'agnosticism' was coined by Professor Huxley at a meeting of the Metaphysical Society in 1876. He defined an agnostic as someone who disclaimed ("strong") atheism and believed that the ultimate origin of things must be some cause unknown and unknowable. Another way of putting it is an agnostic is someone who believes that we do not and cannot know for sure whether God exists. Since that time, however, the term agnostic has also been used to describe those that do not believe that the question is intrinsically unknowable, but instead believe that the evidence for or against God is inconclusive, and therefore are undecided about the issue.

Biographical information, emphasizing his agnosticism.

Clarence Darrow
by Art Thomas (with Emanuel Haldeman-Julius)
Thanks to CRT President Lanny Swerdlow, those who attended the June 18th CRT meeting enjoyed watching a fine video performance by actor Henry Fonda. Fonda portrayed the great Clarence Darrow doing a splendid job busting religious bunk. Lanny also read from a couple of news clippings about Darrow in his late years. Then he read a eulogy to Darrow by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, who had published several books by the noted lawyer, that follows: Clarence Darrow Clarence Darrow, 80-year-old lawyer, Agnostic, liberal, defender of the "underdog" and fighter for civil rights, died on March 13, 1938. He had lived a full, useful, constructive life. As a speaker, he moved tens of thousands to an appreciation of Freethought and humanism. As a writer, especially in his numerous little volumes which I published during the past 20 years, Darrow reached even a larger audience with his messages of enlightenment and realistic evaluations of supernaturalism. For two decades, Darrow was a warm friend of my establishment, pouring his writings and speeches into my presses and always refusing to accept a dollar in payment for his contributions. I offered him money numerous times, but he always declined to accept, once even returning a check I had sent him for his part in a debate on religion. He told me many times that speaking and writing for Freethought were efforts he wanted to dive to humanity, without financial rewards. Darrow, the lawyer, is known to most Americans. Darrow, the Freethinker, wasn't as widely known, but the spade work he did for Agnosticism stands out as a career in itself, one that will, in time, be placed along side that of Ingersoll and other mind-liberators. Once, when asked his attitude toward religion, Darrow replied:

GOOD SOIL
by Kenneth Ambrose Priebe Luke 8:11-15 says, "The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop." To me that verse is probably one of the truest and most personal that I have yet read, because my story is a good example of it. The truth of Christ faded in and out of my life in different shades and colors until I finally got planted in some good soil. I was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, and was brought up in the United Methodist Church.

his word, which has in the twentieth century come to signify little more than passive disbelief , was invented by Thomas Henry Huxley at Cambridge in the 1860s. According to Charles Blinderman, Professor Emeritus at Clark University, "The word seems to have been invented by him towards the end of the '60s, at an early meeting of the Metaphysical Society. He did not use the term until post-1870." Huxley, Darwin 's great advocate, coined the term, he says, because everyone else was an "-ist" of one kind or another, and he had no label to apply to his own beliefs. He meant to distinguish himself from those whose faith provided answers to the most profound questions: Does God exist? How can we know Him? (Why isn't He revealed more unambiguously in the scriptures?) Why would He create evil, and why would He allow the good to suffer and the wicked to flourish? Does He intervene miraculously in this world? Thomas Henry Huxley . Portrait bust in Natural History Museum, London. Photograph by

Charles Bradlaugh was the first militant Atheist in the history of Western civilization. He was elected to the British parliament six times, and each time that body refused to seat him because he was an Atheist and because he would not swear his allegiance to queen and country, so help him ``God.'' Everyone in England knew Bradlaugh and his fight, and he raised the issue of Atheism to every person in public life as he sought allies. The intellectual community contained, at the time, Sir Thomas Huxley, and he coined the word agnostic in 1869 to keep from aligning himself with the hard-pressed Bradlaugh. The word gnosis is the Greek for ``knowledge.'' In words of Greek derivation the prefix a is a privative, that is it gives the word a negative sense. Literally it means ``against knowledge'' or ``negating knowledge.'' Huxley in his letters to the literate community pointed out that he did not feel that salvation could be attained through knowledge. We don't know what ``salvation'' is. But we do know that Huxley referred to the New Testament biblical story of

Agnosticism has had some bad press in recent years. Nonetheless, I hope to show that agnosticism can be so formulated that it is no less philosophically respectable than theism and atheism. This is not a mere philosophical exercise; for, as it happens, the formulated position is I think the one to which I subscribe. I include a qualification here since it may be that the position to which I subscribe is better characterised as fallibilist atheism but more of that anon. I begin by distinguishing between two different kinds of agnosticism. On the one hand, there is strong agnosticism , i.e. the view which is sustained by the thesis that it is obligatory for reasonable persons to suspend judgement on the question of God's existence. And, on the other hand, there is weak agnosticism , i.e. the view which is sustained by the thesis that it is permissible for reasonable persons to suspend judgement on the question of God's existence. Strong agnosticism is characteristically defended by appeal to the apparent lack of good independent evidential support for the claim that God exists. Underlying this appeal there is typically an epistemological principle which resembles the following:

The Case for agnosticism. ¿ ? Furthermore, essays from several prominent agnosticsare offered to give a taste of what agnosticism is like in action.
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/7444/
The Case for Agnosticism When engaging in philosphical discussions, especially about the existence of God, agnostics are usually met with much indignation from both the theistic and atheistic sides of the issue. The former usually accuses an agnostic of knowing the "truth," but ignoring it. The latter usually says agnostics are scared of retribution from society, but are atheists at heart. Interestingly, both camps either claim agnostics are on their side or on the opposite side, but few give agnostics proper representation by admitting this view is a third possibility. The problem is that there are many conflicting definitions and uses of the word "agnostic" going around, and when people are in disagreement about it, they are usually using different definitions. The purpose of these pages is to offer a clear, concise representation of the orginal, classical agnostic view, and to examine why it is the only fair and justifiable position on many topics, including the existence of God. Furthermore, essays from several prominent agnostics are offered to give a taste of what agnosticism is like in action. Essays and Other Literary Works

The Summer 1981 FREE INQUIRY contained the article “What is Agnosticism?" by H. J. Blackham. It dealt primarily with intimations of agnosticism among skeptical philosophers before 1869, when Thomas Henry Huxley invented the term as a label for his personal approach to religious and philosophical questions. This article will provide some history about agnosticism since 1869 and will suggest the reasons for the introduction of the term evangelical agnosticism . It will not deal with the relationship between the words agnosticism skepticism rationalism , and other related terms in the freethought tradition. Huxley’s account of his invention of the word agnostic was written in an essay entitled “Agnosticism” some twenty years after he coined the term. At this time he was sixty-four years old and his place in the Victorian establishment was very secure. He was an original and influential member of the London School Board, president of the Royal Society, and a trustee of the British Museum. Called “Darwin’s Bulldog,” Huxley was renowned for his spirited defense of many scientific ideas that were unpopular with the religious establishment. He wrote:
When I reached intellectual maturity and began to ask myself whether I was an atheist, a theist, or a pantheist; a materialist or an idealist; a Christian or a freethinker; I found that the more I learned and reflected, the less ready was the answer; until, at last, I came to the conclusion that I had neither art nor part with any of these denominations, except the last. The one thing in which most of these good people were agreed was the one thing in which I differed from them. They were quite sure they had attained a certain "
