Call For Papers
The Africa in Academics Students Association in affiliation with the Center for African Studies invite graduate and senior undergraduate students to participate in the Second Annual UIUC Graduate Student Conference to be held on February 26-27, 1999.
This conference is intended to provide a forum for graduate students with shared academic interests in Africa and the African Diaspora to present their work. We are seeking graduate and senior undergraduate papers from all disciplines, such as the Humanities, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Law.
We strongly encourage the participation of those who have not yet had the opportunity to present their work to their peers. Fully completed works as well as works in progress are welcome. Types of contributions include research proposals and papers; preliminary results of research or field data; methodological, theoretical, or conceptual papers; chapters from theses or dissertations.
Submissions: Please submit a brief abstract by February 12, 1999. Presentations should be a maximum of 15-20 minutes in length (about 7-10 double spaced pages). A page attached to the abstract should contain: the title of the paper, your name, your departmental affiliation, your local or campus address, phone number, and email address. If you wish to participate in the event without presenting a paper, please send a confirmation by email.

Booker is the author of the UNDP's first two reports on South Africa and has published numerous articles and opinion pieces on Africa in various U.S. and international publications. In his lecture, The Color Line: Africa and America in the 21st Century, he addressed U.S. foreign policy toward Africa and the significance of race as a policy determinant and in U.S. perceptions of Africa. The title of his talk draws on by W.E.B. DuBois' work of almost a century ago, Souls of Black Folks (1903). In this work, DuBois coined the phrase "the color line" and argued that racism is as fundamental to U.S. policy towards Africa. Booker (

    Visiting Associate Professor
Department of African American Studies The aim of this series of lectures is to highlight and develop important perspectives defined by the postcolonial concerns of African Diasporic Studies. The lectures will present new directions in African diasporic thought and offer distinctive challenges to some of the racialized epistemologies in the social sciences and humanities.
The lecture series is loosely organized around sensitizing metaphors from jazz. These metaphors are used to convey the African Diaspora's contestation of the racialization of the modern worldóits orchestrations, improvisations, dislocations, and reiterations. An evocative installation exploring African diasporic cosmologies and spiritual practices. A collaboration between two artists and brothersLyle Ashton Harris and Thomas Allen Harris. Engaging symbols and myths from hybrid religions such as Santeria, Condomble, Voodoo and Egyptology, the work presents an insightful and provocative anthropology by drawing upon the transformative power of African diasporic aesthetics and European avant guard cinematic representations of mythology and mysticism. These staged theatrical performances are richly evocative tableaus that draw on pagan, aboriginal and African diasporic iconography's. Moving through the past, present and future, Alchemy uses digital technologies such as light-jet lazer 5000 digital imagery and DVD format video to usher in something new.
