Do not be put off by capital letters in the middle of words. They are there for a reason. This site is an attempt at providing an easy and structured online introduction to the philosophy of advaita vedAnta, as taught by SankarAcArya and his followers. It is not meant for religious propaganda. This website represents a serious attempt at exploring philosophical issues in advaita vedAnta, as handled by the leading philosophers themselves, and in the context of their times. At the end, I think it should be obvious that the core of the teaching has a timeless quality to it, making it relevant to all humankind even today. SankarAcArya is the most important teacher of the advaita school of vedAnta, and his commentaries to the upanishads , the bhagavad-gItA and the brahmasUtras define the parameters of advaita thought. However, it must be remembered that all vedAnta philosophy really goes back to the upanishads, and SankarAcArya is regarded as a pre-eminent teacher who continued the upanishadic tradition. The name SankarAcArya has become a title for the heads of the numerous advaita institutions in India today, because of the great respect and fame associated with it.

5. Advaita Vedanta
advaita vedanta. advaita vedanta is the most wellknown school of Indian philosophy.
http://www.angelfire.com/in/satchitananda
ADVAITA VEDANTA Advaita Vedanta is the most well-known school of Indian philosophy. Based on the ancient scriptures, namely the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, and following the rules of interpretation of the Brahmasutras, Advaita Vedanta is at once a school of philosophy, a religion, a theology and a doctrine of salvation. All these roles are only different aspects of the various schools of Vedanta, and Advaita stands as the most important and oldest school of Vedanta.
Advaita Vedanta holds that in the ultimate analysis, all that exists is only Brahman . The vast amount of multiplicity seen in the world of human beings, the diverse kinds of individuals who identify themselves with different names, families, castes and races, indeed the entire universe, from the largest stars to the smallest atom - all this is indeed nothing but Brahman . It is only ignorance of this astonishingly simple, yet complex truth that leads to misery. The individual Atman is also ultimately not different from Brahman , and realization of this important doctrine is Moksha . Such a realization is not just something learnt from a text-book, but this is to be learned from an accomplished Guru who is himself liberated, reflected upon by the student and finally experienced personally in the grandly eloquent silence that accepts all as equal and yet denies all individual characterization.

W elcome to VVH. This web page is an online information center dedicated to the study and dissemination of information about the Sri Vaisnava school of Hindu philosophy, known as Visista Advaita Vedanta. Also known by a variety of other names, including Ubhaya Vedanta, Bhakti Marga and Prapatti Marga, the greatest thinker of this school is Sri Ramanuja Acarya (1017-1137 C.E.), arguably the greatest philosopher in Indian history. On this web site, we will offer original academic works both explaining the fundamentals of Visistadvaita, as well as going more indepth into some of the more esoteric aspects of this ancient school of thought. In this way, we hope that there will be something on VVH for everyone, irregardless of how conversant they are with Hindu philosophy. T his site was created and is co-hosted by Vishal Agarwal, of the University of Minnesota, and Frank Morales, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This is a constantly growing and improving web site. We intend to eventually make this site a virtual library of information on Visistadvaita philosophy. If you would like to contribute a scholarly article about the Visistadvaita school, or if you would like further information about the contents of this web site, please feel free to contact: Frank Morales or Vishal Agarwal.

What's behind the sense of 'I am'? Who's living, and who's facing death? Who or what am I, essentially? Will some part of me continue on after death? Is there an unchanging, eternal part of me? Am I a part of some unchanging, eternal essence? Throughout history occasional individuals have told of finding the answer to those questions, and their testimonies often have a surprising consistency. And as my friend and teacher Richard Rose wrote: "Beyond the mind is a golden find...." For individuals seeking to find the answer for themselves, those testimonies provide helpful clues for pursuing the search to a successful conclusion. For some searchers, working by themselves is the preferred method. Others intuit that finding a few fellow seekers to work with may expedite their progress. Still more fortunate may be those who find a living person who has made the journey and can provide assistance from the perspective of that realization. The Self-Discovery site is designed to offer all three modes of help. Site Diagram Philosophical Self-Inquiry home page and calendar . The Philosophical Self-Inquiry Group of Pittsburgh, PA is a group aimed at implementing maximum systems of self-discovery an approach which can be duplicated anywhere by finding a few people to work with.

Advaita Vedanta
The Indian mystical philosophies and religions are concerned not so much with the manifest reality we see about us, but with the unmanifest Absolute Transcendent . What matters is simply the practical attainment of a state of this universal, transcendent, transpersonal existence. In that state, there is no difference between individual Self (Jiva) and God (Ishwara); there is only the qualityless Absolute ( Nirguna Brahman) . In short, they are not a mental or alalytical philosophy as we understand the term in the West, but rather a conceptual system for guiding yogic practice, with the goal being the complete transcendence of embodied existence. Perhaps the most important school of Indian spiritual philosophy, Advaita Vedanta originates from the writings of Gaudapada and Sankaracharya , who in turn were commentators on earlier scriptures such as the Brahma Sutra , the Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads. As with all Indian systems of thought, Advaita Vedanta is at the same time a school of philosophy, a religion, a theology and a doctrine of salvation It's basic premise is all that all that ultimately exists is the Absolute Reality,

Related Articles Advaita Vedanta as the Quest for Knowledge The collective growth in human intellect over many centuries, borne out of myriad of experiences (for experience is the only source of knowledge), has endorsed 'scientific reason' as the most powerful tool for seeking knowledge. However, it demanded equally powerful, progressive and rational tradition in epistemology and philosophy that could balance the waywardness of science in proclaiming 'study of external nature' as the best form and source of knowledge. Advaita Vedanta alone could match this demand. It was also necessary to nourish and strengthen this path of Advaita, for the galloping discoveries and inventions in science would have not accepted anything less for its equal. Scientists proclaimed sense perceptions further refined and empowered by innovative instruments, equipment and gadgets as the only source of knowledge. Microscopes and lasers, for instance, were seen as the extensions of sense of vision. However, mere refinement of senses and concentration of mind without spiritual dimension proved to be inadequate to reach the highest truth. The 'objective rationality' was disturbed by the necessity of 'subjective consciousness' to interpret and grasp the highest truth. Restlessness of scientists, as they delved deeper into the realm of subtle, came to fore in the form of difficulty in comprehending the 'wave and particle phenomenon', for instance.

Introduction to Eli's Enneagram book
Eleven years ago, when I wrote my first Enneagram book there was only one other available on the subject. It was written from a Jesuit perspective and described the Enneagram in terms of Jesus. I wrote mine in an attempt to make the Enneagram accessible and to point to its use for transcending the fixation. At the time, my own spiritual search had not ended so my book could only go as far as I had gone. In the intervening decade two major events have precipitated the writing of this book...
