Operational Research (OR) isn't a fad or the latest management consultancy cure-all. It has been around since the second world war. The "operational" in OR means pertaining to military operations, and the "research" wasn't an academic exercise - it was an urgent search for practical solutions to operational problems. OR achieved immediate success ("making as big a contribution to the war effort as RADAR " - Len Deighton). When the war was over, OR's founding fathers turned their attention to the problems of business and the public services, but kept the same name. OR in business was originally defined as "a scientific method for providing executives with a quantitative basis for decisions" (Charles Kittell, 1947). At Cap Gemini Ernst & Young (CGE&Y) we don't want to be restricted to quantitative recommendations so we adopt the more general definition "the use of analytical techniques to solve business problems"

SECTION C
Probability, Statistics and Operational Research
  • Short description of section C Probability and Statistics is an enchanting branch of modern Applied Mathematics, which is concerned with the meaning of uncertainty (probability), the design of experiments and sampling methods, the collection and analysis of data and the extraction of inferences. It is also engaged in the study of random phenomena and the development of stochastic models for the description of various physical, social, biological, etc. phenomena. In general, Probability and Statistics deals with the theory and applications of stochastic processes. Subject matters as gallops, demographic surveys, quality control, sampling surveys, clinical trials, retrospective and prospective medical studies, etc. belong to the field of Probability and Statistics. Operational Research is the field of Mathematics, which deals with the optimization of multivariate functions under various types of of constraints and the study of stochastic systems like waiting or storing queues, systems of human potentiality, population models, etc. Operational Research has its roots in theoretical mathematics and finds applications in areas of human activities where problems of modeling and optimization occur. Some important fields of Operational Research are Linear, Dynamic and more general Mathematical Programming, Queueing Systems, Inventory Control, etc.

Current areas of research include:
  • Optimal use of wind energy Hydro inflow modelling Value chain analysis Optimising industrial processes
Basic skills used are:
  • Constrained optimisation techniques (including multi-objective, integer and non linear programming). Discrete simulation (including animation). Visualisation techniques for large datasets.
Recent projects in Operational Research have included:
  • Plant reliability: Optimisation modelling of plant production and equipment degradation is being developed to improve reliability and profitability for an industrial chemical plant. Energy: A generic model has been developed for the optimal siting of wind turbines where there are many possible sites. Models and methods for scheduling multi-reservoir hydrothermal systems have been reviewed, and the weekly hydro inflows to NZ reservoirs modelled. Optimisation models for oil refinery and natural gas processing (NGP) plant investment and operation have also been developed and used for assessing refinery and NGP capital investment options. Value Chain analysis: The technique of value chain analysis has been adapted and applied for a large non-profit-making organisation to determine where and how value is added within the organisation.

About Us
Modelling Links The Operational Research section undertakes research and consultancy with a particular focus on the use of mathematical modelling in health care decision-making. Broadly it undertakes work in two areas. The first is the use of modelling in assessing the cost effectiveness of interventions i.e. modelling in heath technology assessment. The second is the use of modelling to support operational decision making in the NHS. Operational Research was originally the in house operational research unit with Trent Regional Health Authority. Since moving to ScHARR in 1994 the OR section has grown to 12 staff, 7 of whom have 5 years plus experience and post graduate qualifications in operational research, economics or statistics. Its main clients include the Department of Health, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, Regional NHS Executive, NHS Trusts and Health Authorities, Research bodies including the National Co-ordinating Centre for Health Technology Assessment and pharmaceutical companies. One of the key values of the OR section is its combination of academic rigour and robust modelling work in the context of university research whilst being, essentially, a contract research and consultancy organisation which is geared up to meeting the needs of the government, the NHS and pharmaceutical industry on important short term projects.

Canadian Educational Programs in Operational Research Please select a category from the above tabs to view listings. The first course in O.R. was given at the University of Toronto in 1956 in evening sessions. Since then many other universities, colleges and technical institutes have offered courses in O.R. and today there are over forty institutions of higher learning in Canada that give courses in operational research and related disciplines. These courses are offered in all provinces and by such departments and faculties as management science, business administration, commerce, economics, engineering, mathematics, quantitative methods, and computer science. Degrees in O.R. are granted at the bachelor, masters, and doctoral level in various universities. The educational background of an O.R. professional might include a degree in O.R. with courses in science, computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or business, or a basic degree in one or more of these disciplines and post graduate training in O.R. N EWS Professor of Statistics at New York University
The practice of the statistical arts goes back to antiquity. Historians of science can identify several large steps in the development. Perhaps the earliest is the effective census-taking begun in the 17th century. In the 18th and early 19th centuries several important contributions to the mathematical understanding of statistical regularity were made. Many of these developments revolved around the common games of chance. In the late 19th century the rise of the biological sciences, with masses of irregular data, gave a tremendous push to statistics, and the field began to take its present form. The ubiquitous computer of the late 20th century has provided the statistician with enough computing power to accomplish all the arithmetic required by the methodology. The emerging challenge for the field of statistics is the creative use of this new computing power. The field of operations research has its roots in statistics, particularly in probability theory, but has now acquired its own unambiguous identity. Operations research gained prominence during the Second World War, when military planners were faced with logistic tasks requiring prompt and effective solutions. The new optimization technologies were sought by the business community, and operations research soon was used throughout industry. Problems involving manufacturing processes, personnel and material planning, inventory, scheduling, and financial analysis all came to be discussed through operations research. Operations research is a heavy user of computer technology, and the current challenge is sorting out the complexity levels of all the computer algorithms that the field creates.

The information Systems Study Group of the Operational Research Society aims to continue this tradition in the analysis of information technology in organisational settings. This perspective aims to identify and capitalise on the opportunities to use information technology for business goals. Whether the technology is innovative or more traditional, a proper appreciation of risks and social implications of the changes needs to be carefully considered. In order to fulfil these aims, the Study Group will:
