The mathematical world hasn't yet appreciated the advent of a marvelously enlarged and improved number system, J H Conway's surreal numbers. In a compellingly simple and natural way, they simultaneously encompass the usual real numbers, Cantor's ordinal numbers, and a slew of engendered numbers of enormously varied sizes. For the first time we have genuine full-status infinitesimals pace A. Robinson and also Bishop Berkeley... They may be expected to play a large and increasing role in analysis and other branches.

    THE NASHVILLE NUMBER SYSTEM

    by Alan Horvath
Here's a neat little ditty you can easily slip into your bag of tricks. The Nashville Number System is a very easy reference tool, created in Nashville (duh!), by some studio cats, no doubt. I imagine what occurred was, the need to try a number of different keys on any given song, in any given session, was the Mother of Invention here. I could be way off on that, but I'm stickin' to it until someone informs me otherwise.
Anyone who has studied the slightest amount of music theory, chord structures, and/or harmony, understands the numerical theory behind the Nashville System. For example, the "3rd" in a C chord is an E note; using the root (C) as the number one, and counting sequencially upwards ... C = 1, D = 2, and E = 3 ... we know that to play a "3rd over a C," means to play an E note. Naturally, the "3rd" in an E chord (E/1, F/2, G/3) is G# ... because, of course, a G in the E Major scale is always sharp - you knew that ... right? No matter you can just use my chart (below) and skip all that stuff.
And so it goes with the Nashville Number System ... with a very slight twist: Instead of notes, we're talkin' chords - and the "root," or the "number 1" is whatever KEY the song happens to be in check it out:

The CSUMB Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system to arrange books on the shelves in the Book Stacks and in the Reference Collection. Letters of the alphabet correspond to specific subject areas. The books are arranged on the shelves 1) alphabetically by the first line of the call number, 2) numerically by the second line, and 3) by the third and subsequent lines which consist of letters and decimal numbers. For example, books with the following call numbers would be arranged on the shelf from left to right: PA
    before PA

BOX 9.5 Slaminan Number System An example of how technology-supported conversations can help students refine each other's thinking comes from an urban elementary classroom. Students worked in small groups to design different aspects of a hypothetical culture of rain forest dwellers (Means et al., 1995). The group that was charged with developing a number system for the hypothetical culture posted the following entry: This is the slaminan's number system. It is a base 10 number system too. It has a pattern to it. The number of lines increase up to five then it goes upside down all the way to 10. Another student group in the same classroom reviewed this CSILE posting and displayed impressive analytic skills (as well as good social skills) in a response pointing out the need to extend the system: We all like the number system but we want to know how the number looks like, and you can do more numbers not just 10 like we have right now. Many students in this classroom speak a language other than English in their homes. CSILE provides opportunities to express their ideas in English and to receive feedback from their peers.

Note to persons reading this in Braille. This section contains some mathematical notation which may not display correctly when transcribed to Braille 2. We would appreciate feedback on any problems. Place-value and the decimal system. Our decimal or base ten number system is a place-value system. This means that the place or location where you put a numeral determines its corresponding numerical value. (This is analogous to braille codes in that the place you put a cell sometimes determines its meaning.) A two in the one's place means two times one or two. A two in the one-thousand's place means two times one thousand or two thousand. Figure 1 shows the place values for the first six whole number places in the decimal system. Whole number places: Place values: 100000 10000 1000 100 10 1 Fig. 1. Place values (in decimal) for the decimal number system. The place-value of the place immediately to the left of the "decimal" point is one in all place-value number systems. (The point itself should have different names in different number systems but this distinction isn't usually made.)

    A Better Number System
( And that NO zero place holders are needed! ) ( Read my previous Usenet articles on zero. ) If we compare the cycle associated with a macroscopic system ( such as the time it takes the Earth to complete one interaction with the Sun ( one year ), to the cycles of some microscopic system, such as the rotation of the Earth on its' axis ( one day ) we are measuring:
    x = cycles(Earth system) / cycles(Sun-Earth system)
and we get 365.25... days, which is a time. In other words, time(X) = cycles(reference) / cycles(X) or time is simply a ratio of cycles, so we can define some point on a cycle as our reference ( Zero ), and define other points by performing binary searchs about the major cycle. Distance is simply time times a distance per time constant. For example, it is more convenient and, in fact, more correct to define the distance to the Moon, Sun and stars in terms of times rather than in term of distances. distance(X) = interaction time(X) * C where "C" is the speed of light, or more correctly simply a constant that equates time to distance. Mass can also be defined as time by multiplying the mass by a universal time per mass constant: time(mass(X)) = mass(X) * k where k is the universal time per mass constant which is: k = G / C^3 where "G" is the universal gravitation constant, and "C" is the universal distance per time constant.

    Hexadecimal Number System
A big problem with the binary system is verbosity. To represent the value 202 requires eight binary digits. The decimal version requires only three decimal digits and, thus, represents numbers much more compactly than does the binary numbering system. This fact was not lost on the engineers who designed binary computer systems. When dealing with large values, binary numbers quickly become too unwieldy. The hexadecimal (base 16) numbering system solves these problems. Hexadecimal numbers offer the two features:

Each program features an episode from a 3D animated soap opera, which is set on board the venerable luxury cruise ship the SS Mathematical The human crew, Fiz, Flo, Bradley, Baby Bunting and their parents Ted and Mirabelle, look after the needs and whims of twenty charming but demanding animal passengers. In each episode, the Number Crew encounters a problem, which can only be solved by the application of mathematical knowledge and skills. The viewers are encouraged to join with The Number Crew in identifying the mathematical concept at the heart of the problem and developing the mental strategies and skills required to solve it, and sail on into untroubled waters. Teacher Guide: 32 pages including program outlines, learning outcomes, vocabulary lists, recommended before, during and after viewing activities; song sheets, poems.

It is important to note that this number system was in use in Mesoamerica whilethe people of Europe were still struggling with the Roman numeral system.
    http://www.hanksville.org/yucatan/mayamath.html
    Mayan Math
The Mayans devised a counting system that was able to represent very large numbers by using only 3 symbols, a dot, a bar, and a symbol for zero, or completion, usually a shell. The chart above shows the first complete cycle of numbers. Like our numbering system, they used place values to expand this system to allow the expression of very large values. Their system has two significant differences from the system we use: 1) the place values are arranged vertically, and 2) they use a base 20, or vigesimal , or 400, times the value of the numeral. This principle is illustrated in the chart below. Sometimes this number will be expressed in the shorthand 3.10.6.13.17 in writings on the Mayan numeration system, especially when discussing dates that are recorded in stelae or monuments. Using this system for expressing numbers has 2 advantages: 1) large numbers can be easily expressed, so long time periods can be recorded; and 2) simple arithmetic can be easily accomplished, even without the need for literacy among the population. In the marketplace, sticks and pebbles, small bones and cacao beans, or other items readily at hand can be used to express the numbers in the same way that they are expressed on the monuments or in the books of the upper classes. Simple additions can be performed by simply combining 2 or more sets of symbols (within their same set). This is shown below. For more complicated arithmetic, you must simply remember that you borrow or carry only when you reach 20, not 10, as shown below.
