Linear programming, smallest enclosing ball and center point
The computational geometry flavored LP programs here solves LP-type (aka Generalized Linear Programming) problems, which are not necessarily linear. They might also be faster for low dimensional problems with many constraints. For traditional LP programs, which can probably handle much larger problems more robustly, see the Linear programming FAQ Finding the smallest ball containing a family of balls is another LP-type problem. Very nice for manipulating objects surrounded by bounding balls. A center point is kind of like a d -dimensional median; any hyperplane through a center point cuts the input point set into two roughly equal pieces. The truely hard-core will realize that center points belong on this page because the dumb way to find one is by linear programming.

    Linear Programming
A Linear Program (LP) is a problem that can be expressed as follows (the so-called Standard Form):
    minimize cx
    subject to Ax = b
where x is the vector of variables to be solved for, A is a matrix of known coefficients, and c and b are vectors of known coefficients. The expression "cx" is called the objective function, and the equations "Ax=b" are called the constraints. All these entities must have consistent dimensions, of course, and you can add "transpose" symbols to taste. The matrix A is generally not square, hence you don't solve an LP by just inverting A. Usually A has more columns than rows, and Ax=b is therefore quite likely to be under-determined, leaving great latitude in the choice of x with which to minimize cx.
The word "Programming" is used here in the sense of "planning"; the necessary relationship to computer programming was incidental to the choice of name. Please choose any of the following topics : Commercial Software

Linear programming (LP) is one of the most widely applied O.R. techniques and owes its popularity principally to George Danzig's simplex method (Danzig 1963) and the revolution in computing. It is a very powerful technique for solving allocation problems and has become a standard tool for many businesses and organisations. Although Danzig's simplex method allows solutions to be generated by hand, the iterative nature of producing solutions is so tedious that had the computer never been invented then linear programming would have remained an interesting academic idea, relegated to the mathematics classroom. Fortunately, computers were invented and as they have become so powerful for so little cost, linear programming has become possibly one of the most widespread uses for a personal PC. There are of course numerous software packages which are dedicated to solving linear programs (and other types of mathematical program), of which possibly LINDO, GAMS and XPRESS-MP are the most popular. All these packages tend to be DOS based and are intended for a specialist market which requires tools dedicated to solving LPs. In recent years, however, several standard business packages, such as spreadsheets, have started to include an LP solving option, and Microsoft Excel is no exception. The inclusion of an LP solving capability into applications such as Excel is attractive for at least two reasons. Firstly, Excel is perhaps the most popular spreadsheet used both in business and in universities and as such is very accessible. Second to this, the spreadsheet offers very convenient data entry and editing features which allows the student to gain a greater understanding of how to construct linear programs.

    Introduction
In previous issues of this journal I have written about the Excel Solver add-on as an appropriate and powerful medium for teaching linear programming (MacDonald ). Estelles et al ( ) have also written about the virtues of GAMS as a tool for teaching mathematical programming. However, the time is probably right to look beyond the traditional teaching mediums and consider what is available on the internet, particularly the World Wide Web. There appears to be quite a wealth of linear programming (LP) related material on the web, however, much of it is directed at practising researchers. Fortunately there is some growth in the available teaching material and subsequently this article will consider what is currently available with a view to what we might expect in the very near future.
    OR/MS Sites
There tends not to be specific linear programming sites on the web, rather, LP material is typically found under more general collections of operations research/management science (OR/MS) resources. There are, as you would expect, a considerable number of OR related sites. Michael Trick's Operations Research Page provides a very comprehensive guide to these but it does require some skilful searching to seek out the LP-related material. However, for the purposes of writing this paper, it is rather fortunate that there appears to be three very large sites that dominate the web. These can be found at the

The author requests that people retrieve it from ftp://ftp.es.ele.tue.nl/pub/lp_solve (numerical address at last check: 131.155.20.126). There is an older version to be found in the Usenet archives, but it contains bugs that have been fixed in the meantime, and hence is unsupported. The author also made available a program that converts data files from MPS-format into lp_solve's own input format; it's in the same directory, in file mps2eq_0.2.tar.Z. The documentation states that it is not public domain, and the author wants to discuss it with would-be commercial users. As an editorial opinion, I must state that difficult models will give lp_solve trouble; it's not as good as a commercial code. But for someone who isn't sure what kind of LP code is needed, it represents a reasonable first try. LP-Optimizer is a simplex-based code for linear and integer programs, written by Markus Weidenauer (
