  • Global Analysis, Analysis on Manifolds - Dave Rusin; The Mathematical Atlas
A short article designed to provide an introduction to global analysis, which studies the global nature of differential equations on manifolds, that is, dynamical systems. In addition to local tools from ordinary differential equation theory, global techniques include the use of topological spaces of mappings. In this heading also we find general papers on manifold theory, including infinite-dimensional manifolds and manifolds with singularities (hence catastrophe theory), as well as optimization problems (thus overlapping the Calculus of Variations). History; applications and related fields and subfields; textbooks, reference works, and tutorials; software and tables; other web sites with this focus. more>>

    Energy Markets in Transition:
The Latin American and Caribbean Experience
    5. Global Analysis
The framework for the global analysis of energy market liberalisation in general, and in the twelve countries studied in particular, follows the same set of common threads which were discussed in Chapter 3:
    • Transactions and participants.
    • Prices and profitability.
    • Security, service and reliability.
    • Employment.
    • Environment and social responsibility.
5.1 Transactions and Participants There have been notable differences in this thread between those countries where the process is in an advanced stage (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and El Salvador), those where the process is just beginning (Ecuador, Mexico (in the case of electricity) and Venezuela), and those where change has not yet begun (Uruguay and Paraguay). These differences are evident in the following areas:
    • Generation and production.

Global Analysis of Concentration-Response Curves Using SigmaPlot to perform global curve fitting is described in the enzyme kinetics article .  This approach uses an index variable and index values placed in a column in the worksheet.  Also, the the different data sets are column concatenated.  This may not be desirable in some cases and is not necessary.  This application uses a slightly different approach that does not require data column concatenation.  Wiener and Thalody describe the contraction of rabbit aorta to methaxomine and subsequent relaxation to dibenamine.  Families of concentration-response curves were measured for varying concentrations of both methaxomine and dibenamine.  The family of data sets was then globally fit to data using the following operational model of agonism where E is the measured response, A is the agonist concentration.  The curve fit parameters are E

Global Analysis Finds Nearly Half The Earth Is Still Wilderness
December 4, 2002 (Washington, DC) – According to the most comprehensive global analysis ever conducted, wilderness areas still cover close to half the Earth's land, but contain only a tiny percentage of the world's population. More than 200 international scientists contributed to the analysis, which will be published in the book, Wilderness: Earth's Last Wild Places, (University of Chicago Press, 2003). The 37 wilderness areas identified in the book represent 46 percent of the Earth's land surface, but are occupied by just 2.4 percent of the world's population, excluding urban centers. Nine of the wilderness areas fall, at least in part, within the United States. Although the wilderness areas are still largely intact, they are increasingly threatened by population growth, encroaching agriculture and resource extraction activities. Barely 7 percent of the areas currently enjoy some form of protection.

Internet data analysis is increasingly recognized as significant in social science. While numerous problems still exist with internet data analysis, the promise of gigantic Internet access data sets is undeniable. Social scientists are beginning to improve their understanding of how to successfully comprehend what they have in the very large internet access files. The data presented in Global Analysis of Internet represents the sophistication presently possible in looking at Internet data.
Some limitations to the analysis of Internet access dated need be mentioned. First, Internet data is affected by both internal and external factors affecting data strengths. Internal factors include the affect on data of changes in content. External factors include all types of Internet server issues in deliverying web content. Second, the size of Internet access files can increase by gigabytes daily making their analysis difficult. Third, the patterns observed in Internet access data do not appear to have significance for more than a few weeks, at best. Finally, their are privacy issues regarding active data gathering techniques. The use of "cookies" to obtain Internet access data is an unresolved issue.

The question, which this paper is supposed to answer, is indeed a "64 thousand dollar question." The way it was formulated could give the impression that what is expected as an answer is a series of recipes. Clearly, this paper will provide none. While it is obvious that women's involvement in the political process is, nowhere in the world, proportionate to the 50% of the population which they represent approximately or to their input to society - whether this input is or is not accounted for in the GNP - there exist no ready-made solutions immediately applicable in any context. Politics is not a series of techniques but a very complex phenomenon which, in every region of the world and for that matter in every single country, is deeply rooted in historical and institutional developments and has evolved against the background of cultural values, including religious or ideological values. What may have worked - or not worked - in the last 20 years in Sweden, Russia, South Africa or Argentina in a given social and political context and with a specific cultural and spiritual or ideological background may not work or on the contrary work in China, India or the Philippines where the political conditions, the historical background and the relationship between men and women are completely different.

    INTEGRATION, AND MODELLING
The Global Analysis, Integration and Modelling Task Force (GAIM) is a component of the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP) of the International Council of Scientific Unions ( ICSU ). The GAIM Task Force Office is located in the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space, University of New Hampshire. The goal of GAIM is to advance the study of the coupled dynamics of the Earth system using as tools both data and models. GAIM emphasizes activities designed to expand upon the development, testing, and analysis of integrative data sets and models of those aspects of the Earth system where IGBP has the scientific lead, and it commits to collaborate on aspects of the Earth system where WCRP and IHDP have the lead. The role of GAIM is multi-fold. The Task Force must analyze current models and data, assess the capability of current models and experimental programs to resolve key questions, and advance and synthesize our understanding of the global biogeochemical cycles and their links to the hydrologic cycle and to the physical-climate system as a whole. This is done both for natural systems and variability as well as in the context of anthropogenic perturbations. The challenge to GAIM is to initiate activities that will lead to the rapid development and application of a suite of Earth system models spanning a range of model complexity that integrate the roles and interactions of physical climate, ecological, and human systems.

    Global Analysis
Simulation of direct illumination of room interior
    INSPIRER
can serve as a means for global analysis of light propagation in complex scenes. At the image you can see the result of lighting simulation of a room interior where only direct illumination is taken into account. (Therefore it is natural that nothing is seen in the shadow.) We can start indirect light calculation by pushing the NEXT button. Even the first image (produced after 10 seconds) shows correct average indirect illuminance, though with noticeable random noise. This illustrates INSPIRER's features of globality and completeness of lighting simulation. GLOBALITY means essentially that the lighting model takes into account interreflections of lights without restriction on their number. COMPLETENESS means that the model accommodates all known light transfer mechanisms (not only simple diffuse or specular ones). During further simulation the image remains essentially the same, but its accuracy (and smoothness) increases. This illustrates still another advantage of INSPIRER : progressivity of simulation.

    Global Analysis
Innovative software takes exploration of the earth's geographical structure to new, exciting levels
As population density in and around large cities continues to increase, the need for responsible land and resource planning becomes more vital than ever before. And, with access to computer technology capable of retrieving sophisticated information about the earth's geographical structure and functions, both the public and private sectors are experiencing difficulty finding individuals trained to conduct specialized analysis and interpretation of the complex data. To meet corporate, government and educational needs, UHCL has added courses in Geographic Information System (GIS) software to its roster. The School of Natural and Applied Sciences offers GIS courses in the fall and spring semesters, and the School of Education conducts GIS classes in the summer. GIS is designed to collect and analyze a broad range of information about the earth's surface. During GIS training, students learn how to compile data that can be used to explore a region's infrastructure, detect environmental issues and solve complex land-planning and management problems. As one of the few higher learning institutions offering GIS classes, UHCL recognizes the importance of training students for future employment in a field that is rapidly expanding.

    Global Analysis - Reprocessing #3
    Reprocessing #2 Reprocessing #3 Description Chlorophyll a comparison - Winter (17 - 24 Jan 1998)
The high chlorophyll can be seen to be reduced in the coastal regions. Also, the low chlorophyll in the gyres is noticably lower. The extent of chlorophyll retrievals goes slightly further north in the reprocessing 3 image. Chlorophyll a comparison - Summer (13 - 21 Jul 1998)
The reduction of high chlorophyll is even more evident here in the Baltic Sea and other coastal areas. A significant coverage increase can be seen in the Artic Ocean using reprocessing 3. This is due to the use of the wind-dependent Rayleigh radiances. Summary Plots Winter Summer This plot shows a summary of the scatter diagram comparing the reprocessing 3 chlorophyll (y axis) vs the current reprocessing (x axis) for Winter (top plot) and Summer (bottom plot). The high chlorophyll, above 2 mg / m^3 can be seen to decrease with reprocessing 3 greatly: about 40% in the 5 - 10 range of chlorophyll. This is mainly due to the use of the Siegel NIR algorithm. This plot compares the chlorophyll distributions from reprocessing 3 (solid line) to the current processing (dotted line) for the Winter (top plot) and Summer (bottom plot) periods. The chlorophyll below about 0.06 mg / m^3 gets reduced. Also, the sharp cutoff at 0.01 in the current processing (peak at 0.01) is replaced by a smooth drop-off with reprocessing 3.
