Mae 5690
Course Description
Ethnomathematics (MAE 5690) is a graduate mathematics education course demonstrating mathematics as a cultural product. The course includes mathematics learning while focusing on the cultural origins of the mathematical constructs. During the summer of 1997 this course was taught to practicing elementary and middle school teachers in the Dade County Schools Project (DCSP). The DCSP was a three year distance education program offered by The Florida State University and Dade County Public Schools. During the summer, classes were offered in Miami, FL while students participated in distance learning activites during the academic year. Teachers involved in the project were highly motivate and involved in developing both their mathematical and pedagogical ability. Teachers from "critically low" schools were given preferential placement.

About the EDL The Ethnomathematics Digital Library (EDL) is planned as a resource network and interactive learning community for ethnomathematics, with emphasis on the indigenous mathematics of the Pacific region. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is extensively involved in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education (SMETE), and has funded the EDL as a collections project of the National SMETE Digital Library (NSDL) under grant DUE-0121749.
Overview
The EDL has three primary goals:
  • To create an online database of these materials that is reliable, searchable across a range of parameters, and easily accessible to regional, national, and international users To establish a virtual ethnomathematics curriculum and research exchange network that will foster the development of culturally sensitive mathematics curricula and inform future research directions.

Over the past 20 to 30 years, ethnomathematics has developed as an academic discipline to explore the interaction of mathematics and the culture in which it arises. "Ethno" can refer to indigenous societies, as well as to groups identified by profession, religious affiliation, sport, ethnicity, and so on. "Mathematics" can designate a wide range of practices, including methods of counting, measuring, and calculating; symbolic systems; geometric and spatial applications; and ways of reasoning and inferring.
A basic premise of ethnomathematics is that mathematical ideas are mental constructs created by individuals and groups in response to cultural activities. In the Pacific region, these activities might include the following:

Visit this site: http://www.cs.uidaho.edu/~casey931/seminar/ethno.html Author: Nancy Casey Description: Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematics which takes into consideration the culture in which mathematics arises. Mathematics is often associated with the study of "universals"; however, it is important to recognize that often something we think of as universal is merely universal to those who share our cultural and historical perspectives. If we think of mathematics as the development of structures and systems of ideas involving number, pattern, logic, and spatial configuration and then examine how mathematics arises and is used in various cultures, we can gain a much deeper understanding of mathematics. Chapter 11 of Effective Language Education Practices and Native Language Survival Return to Table of Contents An Ethnomathematics Approach to Teaching Language Minority Students
David M. Davison Limited English proficient (LEP) students experience difficulties in learning mathematics that may have little to do with difficulties in processing mathematical ideas. When these LEP students are from different cultures, speak languages other than English as their primary language, and have preferred differences in cognitive processing, the typical approach to organized mathematics instruction observed in American classrooms today is not appropriate. An ethnomathematics approach to the curriculum is advocated in this paper as a means of addressing this concern. D'Ambrosio (1985) defines 'ethnomathematics' as the mathematics needed by a particular subgroup of the population, be it an occupational group or a cultural group. Ethnomathematics includes curricular relevance, but is much more than building a curriculum around the local interests and culture of the learners. This local focus can become limited to the mathematics the students want to study, which they see related to either their traditional or emerging roles. While it is important not to ignore this local perspective, such an approach can overlook the organization of mathematical ideas and preclude the development of a structured mathematics curriculum. The goal is to provide students with mathematics content and approaches that will enable them to successfully master modern mathematics. An ethnomathematics approach to the curriculum can be a vehicle for achieving such a goal.

    Anthropology Masters Thesis:
Ethnomathematics: Concept Definition and Research Perspectives
    Reader 1: Ellen Marakowitz
    Reader 2: Andrew Kosoresow
    Abstract
Although the term ethnomathematics has been in use in the anthropological literature for quite sometime now, a standard definition of the construct has yet to emerge. More than one definition exists, causing confusion and inhibiting systematic research on the subject. Most definitions loosely refer to it as the study of mathematical ideas of non-literate peoples (e.g., Ascher and Ascher, 1997), thereby ignoring or underplaying its profound relationship to culture. More importantly, current definitions are restrictive and too narrow to adequately explain phenomena that rightfully fall within its realm. Providing a conceptually grounded definition is a necessary first step to galvanize the thinking and investigative activity on the subject. My aim in this thesis is to offer such a definition and to descriptively examine its relevance for theory building and research on ethnomathematics.
I start with a brief review of the current definitions of ethnomathematics, highlighting their parochial nature. I then propose an over-arching definition that derives its grounding from interaction and reciprocity-based models. My definition suggests ethnomathematics as the study of the evolution of mathematics that has shaped, and in turn shaped by, the values of groups of people. I then use this definition to historically examine how mathematics, despite its universality and constancy themes, suffers from culture-based disparities and has been influenced in its development by various social groups over time. Specifically, I examine the role of culture in the learning and use of math, gender capabilities in math, and how even racism has played a significant part in the evolution of math.
