This book is concerned with two areas of mathematics, at first sight disjoint, and with some of the analogies and interactions between them. These areas are the theory of linear differential equations in one complex variable with polynomial coefficients, and the theory of one parameter families of exponential sums over finite fields. After reviewing some results from representation theory, the book discusses results about differential equations and their differential galois groups (G) and one-parameter families of exponential sums and their geometric monodromy groups (G). The final part of the book is devoted to comparison theorems relating G and G of suitably "corresponding" situations, which provide a systematic explanation of the remarkable "coincidences" found "by hand" in the hypergeometric case. Ordinary Differential Equations and Linear Algebra

Description
This course focuses on ordinary differential equations and some of their many applications. We will take a multifaceted approach, including both analytic and numerical solution methods, as well as qualitative methods which enable us to discover properties of solutions without actually having a formula. We will find that matrix algebra will be a useful tool, and we will cover the parts of that subject which will be necessary for our use. The program MATLAB will be used throughout, both as a computational tool and as a remarkable aid to visualization. Differential equations are widely used to model phenomena that arise in the sciences and engineering. We will discuss as many of these models as we have time for. We will also spend a little time discussing the modeling process itself.
Textbooks
There are two books required for the course. They are available in a shrink-wrapped package at the Rice Campus Store for the cost of the textbook alone.

Ordinary Differential Equations using MATLAB
This is a manual for using MATLAB in a course on Ordinary Differential Equations. It can be used as a supplement of almost any textbook. The manual completely describes two special MATLAB routines. is a very easy to use routine which takes a user defined first order differential equation, and plots its direction field. It also allows the user to plot solution curves. plots vector fields for planar autonomous systems. It allows the user to plot solution curves in the phase plane. It also enables the user to plot these solutions in a variety of plots versus the independent variable. There are a number of advanced features, such as finding equilibrium points, displaying linearizations, and plotting separatrices. The built-in MATLAB commands for solving ODEs are completely described in their most elementary usages, including the new ODE suite in version 5 of MATLAB. There is a treatment of linear algebra using MATLAB that is sufficient for understanding first order systems with constant coefficients. The second edition was published by Prentice Hall in the Summer of 1999. Information about ordering the manual can be obtained from

Differential Equations
Simulation of photons from a laser interacting with atoms The rate for synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen can be determined from the solution of differential equations Differential equations provide the medium for the interaction between mathematics (especially calculus) and various branches of science and engineering. The physicist, chemist, biologist, engineer, or social scientist models a process with a differential equation and then turns the equation over to the mathematician who tries to provide a solution which results in a complete description of the original process. Differential equations come in all levels of complexity and even today there is active mathematical research in differential equations. In this section, we will look at a couple of the simplest, yet most important, differential equations. Radioactive decay: Over a given time interval, each atom in a sample of a radioactive element has the same (usually fairly or extremely small) chance for disintegration as any other. Thus, if we have a quantity

Differential equation
(Redirected from Differential equations Differential equations describe the relationship between unknown functions and their derivatives . The order of a differential equation describes the most times any function in it has been differentiated. (See differential calculus and integral calculus Given that y is a function of x and that y y y n denote the derivatives d y d x d y d x d n y d x n , an ordinary differential equation is an equation involving x y y y '',.... The order of a differential equation is the order n of the highest derivative that appears. An important special case is when the equations do not involve x . These kind of differential equations have the property that the space can be divided into equivalence classes based on whether two points lie on the same solution. These differential equations are vector fields . Since the laws of physics are not believed to change with time, the world is governed by such differential equations. See also
