    M302 - Ordinary Differential Equations
The computer exercises in this section are based on MAPLE and are for a one semester course in differential equations at the sophomore level. For this course, we use the book:
Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems by Boyce and DiPrima (fifth edition). These notes are rather rough and very unexciting. This is at least in part because they are the result of my first attempt to teach differential equations with MAPLE. The following materials are available: Created by Peter Monk, May 1995.

Fuchsian Singularities of Linear Ordinary DifferentialEquations in Banach Algebras. By Gerald Albrecht in Wuppertal.

The following is the introductory section of a paper collecting some of my mathematical thoughts of the last years. Some problems are still open, the literature about this specific subject is very scarce. I hope the reader will not have too many difficulties due to the cumbersome notation in HTML.
For those seriously interested in this area the complete paper is available as a PDF-file (450kb). Any comment is heartly welcome.

Fuchsian Singularities of Linear Ordinary Differential Equations in Banach Algebras
    By Gerald Albrecht in Wuppertal
In a complex unital Banach algebra B you can define the exponential function exp: B B equivalently by functional calculus or the classical series, which converges relative to the norm topology . B ) belongs to the principal component G of the group G of regular elements of B [BD]. In the early days (1947) of functional analysis J.v.Neumann, Halmos et al. [HP] recognized, that in general - in contrast to the case of a matrix algebra M n (C) - exp( B ) and G are different. This is true for B = BL(H) , the algebra of bounded linear operators on an infinite dimensional complex Hilbert space H, for which Deckard and Pearcy [DP] showed in 1967, that exp(

July-August 2001 This is a thematic programme at the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS). Activities will take place primarily at PIMS during the summer of 2001. The program will concentrate on several interrelated topics originating in physics, chemistry, biology and material sciences as well as in geometry. The common feature of these topics is that they involve the interplay between nonlinear, geometric and dynamic components of partial differential equations. Our goal is to bring together some of the best researchers on these topics for an extended period of time at the Pacific Institute in Vancouver. There will be emphasis on: Viscosity methods in partial differential equations Phase Transitions Concentration Phenomena and Vortex Dynamics Variational methods in partial differential equations as well as Geometric PDEs There will also be several events happening at PIMS during that period (Summer 2001) which are in neighboring areas to this program. They are: a workshop on
