http://yacas.sourceforge.net/yacas.html
YACAS is an easy to use, general purpose Computer Algebra System, a program for symbolic manipulation of mathematical expressions. It uses its own programming language designed for symbolic as well as arbitrary-precision numerical computations. The system has a library of scripts that implement many of the symbolic algebra operations; new algorithms can be easily added to the library. YACAS comes with extensive documentation (320+ pages) covering the scripting language, the functionality that is already implemented in the system, and the algorithms we used.
This entire site (including the documentation) can also be found in the source code distribution

Comparison of Polynomial-Oriented
Computer Algebra Systems
(Preliminary Report)
Robert H. Lewis and Michael Wester
This paper was presented as a poster to the 1999 ISSAC Conference, Vancouver, British Columbia, 28-31 July 1999.
Exact symbolic computation with polynomials and matrices over polynomial rings has wide applicability to many fields. By "exact symbolic" we mean computation with polynomials whose coefficients are integers (of any size), rational numbers, or finite fields, as opposed to coefficients that are "floats" of a certain precision. Such computation is part of most computer algebra systems ("CA systems"). Over the last dozen years several large CA systems have become widely available, such as Axiom, Derive, Macsyma, Maple, Mathematica, and Reduce. They tend to have great breadth, be produced by profit-making companies, and be relatively expensive. However, most if not all of these systems have difficulty computing with the polynomials and matrices that arise in actual research. Real problems tend to produce large polynomials and large matrices that the general CA systems cannot handle.
In the last few years several smaller CA systems focused on polynomials have been produced at universities by individual researchers or small teams. They run on Macs, PCs, and workstations. They are freeware or shareware. Several claim to be much more efficient than the large systems at exact polynomial computations. The list of these systems includes CoCoA, Fermat, MuPAD, Pari-GP, and Singular.

http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~fateman/algebra.html
Here's an index to some recent and some older papers. A number of them have appeared in Proceedings of the International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation (ISSAC), an annual conference usually co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Symbolic and Algebraic Manipulation (SIGSAM), along with other cooperating organizations. More recently I've come to the conclusion that just posting papers here when I think they are "ripe" is useful: I can point to them, and search-engine web bots can find them. Formal publication has become less important scientifically. Consider that people used to send postcards to authors requesting copies of their papers! If you wish to refer to material listed here that is not specifically marked as published, send me a note so I can tell you its current status; it could be that a more formal, archival version exists. The Open Computer Algebra System
MuPAD Pro 2.5 is a full-fledged computer algebra system with a rich set of features and extensive mathematics capabilities for symbolic and numeric computation. A MuPAD "kernel" is the computational engine built into Version 4.1 of Scientific WorkPlace and Scientific Notebook With technology originally developed at the University of Paderborn in Germany and well respected throughout Europe, MuPAD Pro is intended for an extremely broad range of users. Its domains and categories are similar to object-oriented classes that allow overriding and overloading methods, and operators, inheritance, and generic algorithms. The MuPAD language has a Pascal-like syntax and allows imperative, functional, and object-oriented programming. A comfortable notebook interface includes a graphics tool for visualization, an integrated source-level debugger, a profiler, and hypertext help. The latest version of MuPAD Pro is version 2.5

Important Notice
After Version 4.1 Build 2347, Scientific WorkPlace (SWP) and Scientific Notebook (SNB) will contain a kernel for the new MuPAD 2.5 computer algebra system, an upgrade from the MuPAD 2.0 kernel included in earlier builds. The products will no longer contain the Maple V 5.1 kernel.
  • If you purchased Version 3.5, 4.0, or 4.1 of Scientific WorkPlace or Scientific Notebook before December 21, 2002, and your program contains Maple, you have a permanent license for the Maple kernel. When you upgrade to Version 4.1, you can successfully use the Maple kernel provided with the earlier version of your software. If you have Version 4.0 of Scientific WorkPlace or Scientific Notebook, you can upgrade to our latest build at no charge. The build includes the new MuPAD 2.5 kernel and also works with the Maple kernel provided with Version 4.0.
This change does not affect Scientific Word.
