81. An Object-oriented Approach To Complex System Modeling
An ObjectOriented Approach to complex system Modeling. Conclusion. An example ofthe complex system modeled and simulated in object-orientedmanner is presented.
http://www.zemris.fer.hr/staff/vladost/MIPRO94.html
An Object-Oriented Approach to Complex System Modeling Abstract: This article shows another way how object oriented programmingcould be used for simulating behavior of complex systems. Usage of appropriateclass libraries and reusable components enables quick prototyping of themodeled system, integration of behavioral simulation and graphicalrepresentation, and design of friendly user interface. As an example, simulation model of a multistage interconnection network is presented.
Introduction
Section 2. introduces basics of object-oriented system modeling. Some conceptsof C++ programming language use in system modeling are pointed out in section3. In section 4., as an example of the modeled system, multistageinterconnection network [4] is shown. In conclusion drawbacks and possibleimprovements are discussed.
Object-Orientationin System Modeling
Basic idea in object-oriented programming [5][11] is representation of programcomponents as objects . An object interacts with other objects by sendingand receiving messages . Similar approach is used in simulation of realworld systems. System components are connected mutually by diversity of linktypes, exchanging over them matter, fluid, power, data,...

82. Data Routing Simplicity Allows Complex System Construction
This is the old “simple building blocks” story. If you want to makea complex system work, the subparts have to have simple interfaces.
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/John_Barton/datarouting/DataServices/sld021.htm
Slide 21 of 25 Notes:
I stole this picture from an HP eServices scenario. I’m not trying to imply any connection between data routing and eServices yet, but the graphical representation of the scenario is intriguing. Notice that the graphic consists of identical elements sending data to each other. This allows the complex scenario to be described in a few words.
This is the old “simple building blocks” story. If you want to make a complex system work, the sub-parts have to have simple interfaces. Not standardized interfaces, not object-oriented interfaces, not agent interfaces, not even web interfaces. The interfaces have to be simple. Lots of things are missing from the data-routing approach. I hope to keep it that way, and even seek ways to remove stuff.

The Center for Complex Systems Research studies systems that display adaptive, self-organizing behavior as well as systems that are usually characterized by a large throughput, such as turbulent flow, lightning, and the flow of information on the internet. We develop and use the methodologies of nonlinear dynamics and chaos, neural nets, cellular automata, genetic algorithms, and artifical life models to describe these complex systems. The Center for Complex Systems research has a rich history. Founded in 1986 by Stephen Wolfram, the center was later led by Norman Packard and E. Atlee Jackson. A list of several hundred technical reports and scientific publications of CCSR researchers ranging from cellular automata, to entrainment control of chaos, and experimental studies of turbulent flows, chaotic electronic circuits, and fractal agglomertion patterns is avaiable. The research at CCSR is supported by the National Science Foundation Grant no. NSF PHY 01-40179, the U.S. Office of Naval Research under Grant No. N00014-96-1-0335 and DARPA under Grant No. N00014-95-1000.

The ISCOM (Information Society as a Complex System) project is designed to develop a theory and methodology by means of which we may achieve a deeper understanding of what "information society" means and how socio-political-economic structure is related to the ways in which new information, communication and control technologies are generated and used. To carry out this task, we propose to establish an interdisciplinary team of social and physical scientists, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists. The team will initiate research on a new, complexity-based agenda in social science, featuring a dynamic theory of innovation and an account of the emergence of scaling laws in corporate structure and urban systems; it will develop tools to implement this agenda in order to gain new understanding about our current information society; and it will apply this understanding to analyses of possible paths of social-technological development in the future.

"Where chaos begins, classical science stops. For as long as the world has had physicists inquiring into the laws of nature, it has suffered a special ignorance about disorder in the atmosphere, in the fluctuations of the wildlife populations, in the oscillations of the heart and the brain. The irregular side of nature, the discontinuous and erratic side these have been puzzles to science, or worse, monstrosities." Jame Gleick in Chaos: Making A New Science
