Design Rationale for Complex System Documentation

Abstract
Documentation of a complex system like an aircraft requires a model that enables tracing of decisions made by the author(s). The authors need to be able to include not only the information content deriving from the design but also communicative intentions-the traces of various design choices by the designers and the authors. In this paper, we suggest an authoring model capable of incorporating different kinds of knowledge in an authoring environment for technical documentation. The model is based on the idea of discourse acts and enables representation of intentions in addition to the domain content. We show how this model can be used in the case of documentation of procedures for commercial aircraft. Keywords : Technical documentation, traceability, design rationale, speech acts, domain acts, meta acts

Ensign Power Systems can meet all your power needs. 9023 - COMPLEX SYSTEM, QUICK TURNAROUND
Customer Need:
A high output military application where continuous operation is critical. The customer working through another company found themselves at the critical design review with no power supply. The application is a torbedo threat warning system in a British submarine requiring multiple redundant power modules and hot spare capacity. The customer needed an immediate solution and turned to Ensign Power Sytems.
Ensign Solution: Over 20 years of experience in power supplies allowed us to deliver the first form-fit-function power supply that normally takes 6-9 months in only 13 weeks. Although not an ideal schedule, we recognized the importance of meeting our customer's critical needs and responded in full urgency. The power supply, a 3U high, 19-in. rack mount design, provides +5V @ 158A, + 12V @ 14A, and -12V @ 7A with N +1 redundancy, input power factor correction and battery backup for 50 seconds. The power supply has four power modules and will provide full power output with any three modules. A control module provides output monitoring, battery charging, and system interface for power supply status.

The Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry is struggling to adapt its methodologies to the ever-increasing complexity of modern electronic design problems. However, considerable evidence suggests that existing tools and techniques will not scale, and that continued industry growth will require fundamental methodological changes. UC Berkeley's WELD project is pioneering the attack on the EDA problems of tomorrow, with the goal of creating a new, scalable architecture for complex system design. Our efforts are concentrated on the two major sources of complexity: the managerial complexity of coordinating an ever-increasing number of humans involved in high-level design and the technical complexity of optimizing for orders-of-magnitude increases in number of deep-submicron physical components for low-level design. At the high-level, WELD aims to construct the first operational prototype of a Internet-wide complex systems design environment. The goal is to enable collaboration between humans distributed over different areas of specialization, geography and time. Towards this end we have concentrated on the technologies of Java and the World Wide Web, and are experimenting with new visualization tools and user interface and groupware paradigms. In addition, we are developing the software infrastructure which will allow such applications to interoperate.

Process-oriented Integration of IT-Applications
Complex System Landscapes
Today’s system landscapes are becoming more heterogeneous and more difficult to understand all the time. For example, additional CRM or SCM solutions are added to the one or more ERP systems already in a company. Modern B2B-solutions have been added to the landscape in recent years, but older legacy systems are also still in use. Integrated solutions that enable seamless e-business are expected to evolve unaided from the enormous number of patchwork applications. Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) represents a very promising approach for precisely this situation. However, technology alone is not sufficient to master the task of integration. Process orientation is the key to success, focussing as it does on the process logic of commercial operations, and thus protecting the economic objectives of integration. Example of a complex, high quality radon system installation. Ann Arbor, Michigan Post-Mitigation Radon Reading: 1.9 picoCuries/liter Exterior view. The vacuum fan is enclosed in the white shroud (soon to be painted brick red). The pvc exhaust stack was painted prior to installation. Exhaust meets all EPA guidelines, being 10 feet above ground, above the eave and at least 2 ft above the nearby window. A 90 degree elbow is mounted at the top to keep the moist exhaust from blowing on the structure. In this grand old home, bearing walls divide the basement and subslab areas into four major zones, each of which required a separate radon collection point. Here we see the riser from one of the four points, with tees going off to other points. Toward the right end of the horizontal run is a valve used for balancing the gas flows within the system. Our system is threaded through this morass of piping. One of those horizontal runs is ours. Subtle point: no u-trap sections allowed; these would collect condensate, create burbling noises, and compromise the system's effectiveness. Here is the point where the system exits the basement. Note the pressure gauge on the riser, telling that the fan is working. This system also includes a plug-in digital monitor/alarm that displays the radon reading and beeps if the system fails and the radon level climbs above the EPA guideline.

System Reliability Terms Block diagram
A diagram that represents how the components, represented by "blocks," are arranged and related reliability-wise in a larger system. This is often but not necessarily the same as the way that the components are physically related. Complex system
A block diagram that cannot be reduced to series and/or parallel systems. Decomposition method
A method for determining the reliability of complex systems. The decomposition method is an application of the law of total probability, which involves choosing a "key" component and then calculating the reliability of the system twice: once as if the key component failed and once as if the key component succeeded. These two probabilities are then combined to obtain the reliability of the system, since at any given time the key component will be failed or operating. Event space method
A method for determining the reliability of complex systems. With the event space method, all mutually exclusive events are determined. The reliability of the system is simply the probability of the union of all mutually exclusive events that yield a system success (the unreliability is the probability of the union of all mutually exclusive events that yield a system failure). Path-tracing method
A method for determining the reliability of complex systems. With this method, every path from a starting point to an ending point is considered. Since system success involves having at least one path available from one end of the

Complex Systems
In many cases it is not easy to recognize which components are in series and which are in parallel in a complex system. The following network is a good example of such a complex system: Figure 17 (System Reliability)- Example of a complex system. As the figure illustrates, this system cannot be broken down into a group of series and parallel systems (this is primarily due to the fact that component C has two paths leading away from it). Several methods exist for obtaining the reliability of a complex system: Decomposition method. Event space method. Path-tracing method. Decomposition Method The decomposition method is an application of the law of total probability. It involves choosing a "key" component and then calculating the reliability of the system twice: once as if the key component failed ( R = 0) and once as if the key component succeeded ( R = 1). These two probabilities are then combined to obtain the reliability of the system, since at any given time the key component will be failed or operating. Using probability theory, the equation is: Illustration of the Decomposition Method Consider three units in series.
