05: Combinatorics
Introduction
Combinatorics is, loosely, the science of counting. This is the area of mathematics in which we study families of sets (usually finite) with certain characteristic arrangements of their elements or subsets, and ask what combinations are possible, and how many there are. This includes numerous quite elementary topics, such as enumerating all possible permutations or combinations of a finite set. Consequently, it is difficult to mention in this page all the topics with which a person new to combinatorics might come into contact. Moreover, because of the approachable nature of the subject, combinatorics is often presented with other fields (elementary probability, elementary number theory, and so on) to the exclusion of the more significant aspects of the subject. These include more sophisticated methods of counting sets. For example, the cardinalities of sequences of sets are often arranged into power series to form the generating functions, which can then be analyzed using techniques of analysis. (Since many counting procedures involve the binomial coefficients, it is not surprising to see the hypergeometric functions appear frequently in this regard.) In some cases the enumeration is asymptotic (for example the estimates for the number of partitions of an integer). In many cases the counting can be done in a purely synthetic manner using the "umbral calculus". Combinatorial arguments determining coefficients can be used to deduce identities among functions, particularly between infinite sums or products, such as some of the famous Ramanujan identities.

The Aims and Scopes Annals of Combinatorics will publish outstanding contributions to combinatorial mathematics in all its aspects. Special regard will be given to new developments which have yet to be given proper recognition, but which in the opinion of the editors show promise of eventual mathematical breakthroughs. Papers published in Annals of Combinatorics will not be limited to the field of combinatorics in the strict sense. They will range over problems and theories that have arisen, or will arise, in applications to computer science, biology, statistics, probability, physics and chemistry, as well as over work of a combinatorial nature in representation theory, number theory, topology, algebraic geometry and the theory of special functions. Annals of Combinatorics will also publish research announcements, book reviews, as well as revealing and inspiring expositions. This journal will at all times ensure the efficient and speedy processing of submitted manuscripts. Special Issue on Statistical Mechanics and Combinatorics, Edited by Anthony J. Guttmann

This conference/school will feature a lecture series by Alain Connes and several mini-courses by leading experts in noncommutative geometry and its applications to physics and geometry. In addition there will be a number of invited research talks and short contributions. Since a major component of the meeting will be the school, we strongly encourage graduate students and postdocs to participate.
Talks will start on Friday, May 2 in the morning and end around noon on Tuesday, May 13. On Friday, May 9, we plan to have a day off since Vanderbilt's commencement takes place on that day. Click to see the Schedule of talks (not yet available).

    What is Optimization?
Combinatorics is the mathematics of discretely structured problems. Although its boundaries are not easily defined, combinatorics includes the theories of graphs, enumeration, designs and polyhedra. It is a subject which in the past was studied principally for its aesthetic appeal. Today's modern technology with its vital concern for the discrete has given combinatorics new challenges and a new seriousness of purpose. In particular, since computers require discrete formulations of problems, combinatorics has become indispensable to modern computer science. Optimization, or mathematical programming, is the study of maximizing and minimizing functions subject to specified boundary conditions or constraints. The functions to be optimized arise in engineering, the physical and management sciences, and in various branches of mathematics. With the emergence of the computer age, optimization experienced a dramatic growth as a mathematical theory, enhancing both combinatorics and classical analysis. In its applications to engineering and management science, optimization forms an important part of the discipline of operations research.

    Enumeration
Enumeration is concerned with determining the number of structures with prescribed properties, and is a frequently used tool in mathematics. Many enumeration problems arise from ranking and significance testing in statistics, from probability theory, from telephone networks and from mathematics itself. Extensive calculations are often necessary, and the field of computational enumeration is an important one. The task of getting a computer to evaluate formulae obtained by applying enumerative methods is one requiring considerable experience both with computers and with combinatorics.
