Slavoj Zizek on Fantasy (and en passant Kant and Kierkegaard on "The Third")
[1] The gap that separates beauty from ugliness is . . . the very gap that separates reality from the Real: what constitutes reality is the minimum of idealization the subject needs in order to be able to sustain the horror of the Real. [ The Plague of Fantasies (London: Verso, 1997), p. 66] [2] Do we not encounter . . . the horrifying weight of the encounter of a neighbor in the Real of her presence? Love thy neighbor? No, thanks! And this split . . . , the radical oscillation between attraction and repulsion, between longing for the distant beloved and feeling estranged and repelled by her proximity, by no means exposes a 'pathological' imbalance . . . : such an oscillation is constitutive of human desire, so that the true enigma is, rather, how a 'normal' subject succeeds in covering it up and negotiating a fragile balance between the sublime image of the beloved and her real presence, so that the flesh-and-blood person can continue to occupy the sublime place and avoid the sad fate of turning into a repulsive excrement. A man in the late 20ies at my right was so immersed in the film that he all the time disturbed other spectators with loud exclamations, like "My God, wow, so there is no reality!"... I definitely prefer such naive immersion to the pseudo-sophisticated intellectualist readings which project into the film the refined philosophical or psychoanalytic conceptual distinctions.(1) It is nonetheless easy to understand this intellectual attraction of The Matrix: is it not that The Matrix is one of the films which function as a kind of Rorschach test [ http://rorschach.test.at/

Slavoj Zizek in Ha'aretz : I'm living in a coo-coo clock!
Noam Yuran of a Ha'aretz gamely interviews Slavoj Zizek on the occasion of his visit to Israel. I planned to stay away from theorists like him, but I'll bite when he steps out to speak to the reading public of a leftist Israeli newspaper. Arguably, being published by Alexander Cockburn's Verso also counts as more of a political gambit than an academic one, but one look at The Ticklish Subject: The Absent Centre of Political Ontology will convince you otherwise. As background, Boynton's Lingua Franca article on Zizek is here , which partly misrepresents him as a wackier version of Hans Magnus Enzensberger, but offers Zizek's great account of his botched psychoanalysis:
But how does he speak to the public? Yuran says:
Zizek's prose style has a rebellious and highly compelling side that brushes up against the most critical intellectual trends of our day like cultural studies, contemporary feminism, post-colonialism, and post-modernism.
When filtered down for the common man, here's what it sounds like:

Slavoj Zizek on Really Existing Socialism
Although "really existing socialism" has already receded into a distance which confers upon it the nostalgic magic of a postmodern lost object, some of us still recall a well-known joke about what really existing socialism is: A social system that is the dialectical synthesis of all human history.
  • From the prehistoric classless society, it took primitivism
  • from antiquity, slave labor
  • from medieval feudalism, ruthless domination
  • from capitalism, exploitation
  • and from socialism, its name.

An Introduction to the Work of Slavoj Zizek
Through readings of The Ticklish Subject: The Absent Centre of Political Ontology
Although Zizek’s style may lead many to categorize him as postmodern—he speaks of St. Paul and James Cameron in the same breath, uses Diet, Caffeine-free Coke and Viagra to elucidate Lacanian theory—he is decidedly modern. In fact, his project is a critique of postmodern subjectivity. In his own words, his work “relies on the full acceptance of the notion of modern subjectivity elaborated by the great German Idealists from Kant to Hegel: for me, this tradition forms the unsurpassable horizon of our philosophical experience, and the core of my entire work is the endeavor to use Lacan as a privileged intellectual tool to release German Idealism” ( ix Zizek’s critique of postmodern subjectivity derives primarily from what he sees as its impotence. In the shifting identities, multiple subjectivities, and multicultural identity groups that are often touted as liberating, much-welcomed alternatives to modern, Cartesian subjectivity, Zizek sees an unavoidable obstacle to real social transformation. Zizek is a fighter for what he calls “politics proper,” “the moment at which a particular demand is not simply part of the negotiation of interests but aims at something more, and starts to function as the metaphoric condensation of the global restructuring of the entire social space” ( ). Postmodern identity politics have a goal that is in direct opposition to the politics proper desired by Zizek. Rather than serving to subvert capitalism, these diverse movements are made possible

The text in Swedish

Slavoj Zizek's multi-faceted and highly innovative work has during recent years become the subject of many debates, and has received widespread critical acclaim. Drawing on the tradition of psychoanalysis from Freud to Lacan, classical philosophy, social theory, and a profound knowledge of the whole of contemporary popular culture, he has produced startling new readings of contemporary cinema, philosophy, and the formation of political ideologies.
Much of his recent work has been devoted to exploring the effects of modern information technologies on our experience of our bodies, our desire, and our fantasy. His talk at Art Node will address the question of "trauma" and "perversion" in cyberspace, and investigate to what extent the Real - that which affects us, moves us, but also eventually destroys us - has any sense in the digital world. The interview, lecture and additional material will be available at this page (www.artnode.se/zizek)
