    Empiricism
The Empirical Stance by Bas C. Van Fraassen (Yale University) What is empiricism and what could it be? Bas C. van Fraassen, one of the world's foremost contributors to philosophical logic and the philosophy of science, in his Terry Lectures undertakes a fresh consideration of these questions and offers a program for renewal of the empiricist tradition. The empiricist tradition is not and could not be defined by common doctrines, but embodies a certain stance in philosophy, van Fraassen says. This stance is displayed first of all in a searing, recurrent critique of metaphysics, and second in a focus on experience that requires a voluntarist view of belief and opinion. Van Fraassen focuses on the, philosophical problems of scientific and conceptual revolutions and on the not unrelated ruptures between religious and secular ways of seeing or conceiving of ourselves. He explores what it is to be or not be secular and points the way toward a new relationship between secularism and science within philosophy.

    Introduction

Physics and our View of the World
    Edited by Jan Hilgevoord
Paperback In stock One of the central questions of physics is whether or not a Theory of Everything is possible. Many physicists believe that such a theory might be attainable, a belief which has led to speculation that we might one day ‘know the mind of God’. But what would be the philosophical implications of having a blueprint for the Universe? In this fascinating book, a group of distinguished physicists and philosophers examine not only the claims of modern physics, but also the impact these claims have on our view of the world. Based on talks given at the Third Erasmus Ascension Symposium in The Netherlands, the book contains contributions from John Barrow, Paul Davies, Dennis Dieks, Willem Drees, Paul Feyerabend, Bas van Fraassen, Mary Hesse, Gerard ’t Hooft and Ernan McMullin. At a time when many people view science with deep suspicion, this book will be of great interest to anyone wishing to explore the complex relationships that exist between physics and philosophy, theology and ideology.

    New Essays
Edited by Paolo Leonardi, Marco Santambrogio
In stock Quine is one of the most influential of contemporary philosophers, whose work has ranged broadly across a great number of topics and issues in a career spanning some fifty years. In this collection a group of distinguished philosophers offer a sustained critical evaluation of the full range of Quine’s writings. Amongst the topics addressed are interpretation, epistemology, ontology, modality, and mathematical truth. This is very much a ‘state of the art’ collection that will influence all future discussion of Quine. The contributors include: George Boolos, H-N. Castaneda, Donald Davidson, Umberto Eco, Dagfinn Follesdal, James Higginbotham, Charles Parsons, Hilary Putnam, Barry Stroud, and Bas van Fraassen. However, Quine is given the last word, responding to the essays in the final contribution.

I hope to be able to add to this not-yet-quite-impressive list in due time (and by all means let me know if there are any omissions.) I note that there is a relative glut of cats and a surplus of dogs; and, I must add, given their relative worth in the scheme of things, perhaps a shade too much of a cockatoo presence. In alphabetical order ...

Yes, I know that's where you've just come from, but there has to be at least one dog link.

(I shouldn't inject editorial comment, but the cockatoos depicted are all sulphur-crested cockatoos, which are, by a happy coincidence, the largest, loudest, most numerous, smartest and most beautiful species of cockatoo in Australia. I don't know how well Josh's thesis would hold over cockatoos in general.)

Spacetime Causal Theory of Time Causal Theory of Time Sklar says "the primary philosophical issue we will be concerned with is the question of the reducibility of temporal structure to causal structure, the so-called question of the causal theory of time" (243). Although this question is pursued in Sklar's chapter IV, it may be useful to have a rough outline of the causal theory of time in advance. And for this purpose, van Fraassen 's chapter 6 of An Introduction to the Philosophy of Time and Space (2nd ed., 1985) is quite good. He reviews Reichenbach's earlier view ( The Philosophy of Space and Time ) and later view ( The Direction of Time ), Gruenbaum's versions of the theory ( Philosophical Problems of Space and Time , and Modern Science and Zeno's Paradoxes ), and goes on to an extension of the theory to a spacetime theory. The review is clear and readable, touching also on essential criticisms of each theory. References Gruenbaum, A. (1974) Philosophical Problems of Space and Time , 2nd. ed., Reidel, 1974.
