van Fraassen, Bas C. (1999) Structure: its shadow and substance. Full text available as: Adobe PDF (.pdf)
Abstract
On December 9, 1908 Max Planck addressed the Student Corps of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Leiden. His announced topic was The Unity of the Physical World-Picture , but the real intent was a polemic against a whole bevy of famous scientists who had turned against realism in the past fifty years. The debate concerning how science represents nature, and specifically whether it represents more than solely structural aspects of the phenomena, had begun earlier in the 19th century, and would continue for the remainder of the 20th I will discuss both the scientific motivations and the philosophical reactions, including scientific realism and the new Structural Realism, as well as offer an empiricist structuralist view as alternative. Keywords: structuralism, structural realism, scientific realism, constructive empiricism, representation Comments: This paper was presented at the University of Leiden in 1999, and revised as a contribution to a planned Festschrift in honor or Arthur Fine that is still in progress

van Fraassen, Bas (2002) Science as Representation: Flouting the Criteria. Full text available as: Microsoft Word Format (.doc)
Adobe PDF (.pdf)
Abstract
Science represents the phenomena and it does so by providing representations of nature with the phenomena at best as a part. Criteria of adequacy for a representation pertain to accuracy and truth; but that representation is selective and may require distortion even in the selected parameters is an old and familiar point, intimately related to the insight that representation is intentional with adequacy relative to its particular purpose. If we add to this that observation and measurement are perspectival and that the appearances to be saved are the perspectival measurement outcomes, the question whether this "saving" is an explanatory relation in contemporary physics can provide a new focus for the realist/anti-realist debate. The Born rule and von Neumann's "collapse" postulate in quantum mechanics provide a telling case. Keywords: philosophy of science; representation; realism/anti-realism; models and idealization

The University of LethbridgeHonorary Degrees 1999 SPRING CONVOCATION HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT BAS van FRAASSEN Bas van Fraassen is the very model of the
liberally-educated person. Truly a "Renaissance
man", he possesses a rich historical understanding
of the western tradition. He also maintains a close
and active connection with Alberta and Canada,
and is held in the highest regard by the philosophy
and research community, where his stature and
influence are enormous. Born in the Netherlands in 1941, Bas van Fraassen
immigrated with his family to Alberta where he later
attended the University of Alberta, completing his
B.A. (Honours) in Philosophy in 1963. He also holds a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. He is presently Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University.

Against Naturalized Empiricism ABSTRACT Can empiricism be developed in such a way as to involve neither the sort of metaphysics to which it was traditionally the reaction, nor foundationalist epistemology? Quine's 'naturalized epistemology' and 'naturalized' versions of empiricism are not adequate to this task; Carnap's "Empiricism, semantics, and ontology" may contain a valuable clue, despite its apparent problems.

    0. Introduction.
In front of me on the table sits a rectangular, chromium-plated metal frame. Suspended on very thin nylon threads hang 6 identical stainless steel balls, nicely in a row. I lift the leftmost ball 2 centimeters, and let it go. The ball falls back in place, hits its neighbor, and seemingly instantaneously the ball on the right end of the chain jumps up. The four balls in the middle seem not to have moved at all. The rightmost ball falls back, and for the next five minutes the first and the last ball repeat their alternating collisions with a periodic clicking sound. Someone asks: ‘why does the last ball gets almost to the same height as the first ball?” Many answers come into my mind:
