Edith Stein
Zur Wahrheit berufen - vom Kreuz gesegnet
Ein Lebensbild von Kard. Dr. Friedrich Wetter

Memorial Day August 9th Bibliography Novena of the Holy Spirit Edith Stein: An Historical Perspective with host Fr. Charles Connor Part 1 Part 2 Edith Stein Born on October 12, 1891, of Jewish parents, Siegried Stein and Auguste Courant, in Breslau, Germany, Edith Stein from her earliest years showed a great aptitude for learning, and by the time of the outbreak of World War I, she had studied philology and philosophy at the universities of Breslau and Goettingen. After the war, she resumed her higher studies at the University of Freiburg and was awarded her doctorate in philosophy Suma Cum Laude . She later became the assistant and collaborator of Professor Husserl, the famous founder of phenomenology, who greatly appreciated her brilliant mind. After her conversion, Edith spent her days teaching, lecturing, writing and translating, and she soon became known as a celebrated philosopher and author, but her own great longing was for the solitude and contemplation of Carmel, in which she could offer herself to God for her people. It was not until the Nazi persecution of the Jews brought her public activities and her influence in the Catholic world to a sudden close that her Benedictine spiritual director gave his approval to her entering the Discalced Carmelie Nuns’ cloistered community at Cologne-Lindenthal on 14 October 1933. The following April, Edith received the Habit of Carmel and the religious name of "Teresia Benedicta ac Cruce," and on Easter Sunday, 21 April 1935, she made her Profession of Vows.

At an open-air ceremony in the Cologne soccer stadium on May 1, 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified Edith Stein, that is, he declared her worthy of public veneration as a genuinely holy, or blessed, person. In Rome on Oct. 11, the Pope will canonize Edith Stein, who was known in the Carmelite order as Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, proclaiming her a saint. In the following essay, Steven Payne, O.C.D., provides an overview of the new saint's life and reflections upon certain aspects of its significance. Father Payne is the prior of the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Washington, D.C., and an instructor at the Washington Theological Union. He is also editor in chief of the Institute of Carmelite Studies Publications, which includes among its current projects the publication of English translations of the collected works of Edith Stein. This article is based on a homily the author gave at the Baltimore Carmel on Aug. 9. THE CANONIZATION OF Edith Stein will no doubt bring, along with further arguments over her status as a martyr, a growing chorus of praise for her remarkable achievements. Yet despite the accolades, we know that her life could hardly be considered a success story by any ordinary standards. Perhaps it is her very failures that bring her closer to us.

Converts, saints and Jews: Confronting the story of Edith Stein
MY EARLIEST MEMORY of any sort of Jewish education is not the first time I encountered the aleph-bet or learned my first prayers. It was — at some uncertain point in my early childhood — hearing my mother tell me what she herself was told as a child — that I was part of an unbroken line who had suffered and fought for thousands of years to keep their identity as Jews. Stein
It was a message that I heard on countless occasions over the years, whether we were discussing the dangers of assimilation or my lack of enthusiasm for going to synagogue or attending Hebrew school. Regardless of the circumstance, I was put on notice that it was up to me not to let those who had gone before us, from Abraham to the martyrs of countless generations, down. Though I don't think my mother was familiar with the works of Emil Fackenheim, that writer's pronouncement, that in the aftermath of WWII, the 614th commandment of Judaism should be, "Thou shalt not give Hitler any posthumous victories," surely resonated in our household.
SPIRITUAL TREASON OR SPIRITUAL CHOICE
The idea of giving up our faith and our identity as Jews was the greatest anathema and utterly unthinkable. The only converts from Judaism that I knew of were the villains in the cartoon history lessons on the back of the "World Over" magazine which I read in Hebrew school, such as Johann Pfefferkorn, a 15th century German Jew who converted and helped promulgate laws which called for the burning of the Talmud. I saw conversion to another religion as a form of spiritual — if not literal — treason.

Thalia Gur-Klein
Some Like Them Iconised: Edith Stein, the Ambiguity of Jewish Female Sainthood in WWII History: The Nazi Occupation, the Jews, the Christian Jews and the Church
On July 11, 1942, a collective letter of ten Protestant and Catholic Dutch Churches was sent to the occupying German authorities. In this letter the ten most prominent Christian representatives, Protestants and Catholics, expressed their dismay at the decrees and exclusion of the Jews from normal life due to recent deportation of men, women, children and entire families. Appealing to the Christian sentiments of the occupiers, the Churches ended their pleas arguing that the Christians Jews moreover would be cut off from the Church way of life and devotion. The nazi General Schmidt offered a concession to the Dutch Churches, in which Christian Jews converted before 1 January 1941 were to be exempted from deportation. This exemption was meant to appease the protesting spirit of the Churches before a large deportation of the bulk of the Jews was to take place on 15 July 1942. Five days later, the occupying general declared that it had never been his intention to exempt the Christian Jews indefinitely. His future policy would depend on the attitude of the Churches. For this purpose, the German occupying police was given ‘Kanzeluberwachung’ , a right to listen to Church sermons during the coming Sundays. The original letter to the occupying Nazi general from July 11, 1942 was first circulated on 23 July, with the intention of having it read on Sunday 26 July from the Churches’ pulpits.

Edith Stein is one of those people whose entire life seems to be a sign. She was born on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, in 1891 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), the youngest of eleven children in a devout Jewish family. During the summer of 1921, at the age of twenty-nine, Stein was vacationing with friends but found herself alone for the evening. She picked up, seemingly by chance, the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, founder of the Carmelite Order. She read it in one sitting, decided that the Catholic faith was true, and went out the next day to buy a missal and a copy of the Catholic catechism. She was baptized the following January, but her desire immediately to enter the Carmelites was delayed for a time. Her advisers saw that her conversion and claustration would be a double blow to her mother, and they knew the Church could benefit enormously from her contributions as a speaker and writer. While on a trip during Holy Week of 1933, Edith stopped in Cologne at the Carmelite convent during the service for Holy Thursday. She attended it with a friend, and by her own account, the homily moved her very deeply. She wrote:

An extract from the book edith stein by Sister Teresia de Spiritu Sancto, Sheed Ward, 1952.

THE CONVERT At this time, Edith's friend, Frau Hedwig Conrad-Martius, suggested that she should write an essay "Plant-soul-animal-soul-human soul," which was to cause a sensation among her colleagues. The whole work was an ascent, an acknowledgment of God, which seemed to show that she was already converted. Such was the opinion of her friends, but Edith was not convinced. Did she ever pray for the grace of faith ? She herself said later, " My longing for truth was a prayer in itself ." Her work and study with Hedwig Conrad-Martius and her husband had developed a real friendship between them, which often led Edith to make longer or shorter visits to Bergzabern, where her friends were running a large fruit-farm. Edith, who never shrank from practical work, found the fruit-picking, packing and grading a valuable mental relaxation. She threw herself into whatever was going on. During the day they worked; in the evening they talked philosophy. It happened, however, that during one of these holiday visits both husband and wife had to go away. Before their departure Frau Conrad-Martius took her friend over to the book-case and told her to take her pick. They were all at her disposal. Edith herself tells us, " I picked at random and took out a large volume. It bore the title
