The Transnational Vladimir Solovyov Society
Welcome! The Transnational Vladimir Solovyov Society was formed by Russians, Americans and West Europeans in Moscow in 1991. Named after the Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), it is an informal group of persons interested in Russian culture and in the whole Russian philosophical tradition (not just in the work of Solovyov). We currently have over 150 members in ten countries. You are invited to join us! As of 2000, the Society will function entirely by e-mail, using both e-mail newsletters and a related discussion group. There are no dues; simply join our e-mail list as described below. Society information is exchanged primarily by e-mail newsletters, issued several times a year. The Society has held annual conferences: at Institute of Philosophy, Moscow, 1991; Dartmouth College, 1992; Institute of Philosophy, Moscow, 1993; University of Bergamo, 1994; Institute of Philosophy, Moscow, 1995; University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, 1998. Its next conference will be at the Institute of Philosophy, Moscow, August 26-30, 2000. The Society's Moscow office is at the Institute of Philosophy (see address below). Affiliated sections of the Society are being formed in other Russian cities. Members are found in over ten countries. 25. FROM VLADIMIR SOLOVIEV
Excerpts from the Rees translation of solovyov's 'Russia and the Universal Church'. Includes solovyov's interpretation of some traditional stories.
http://praiseofglory.com/soloviev.htm
SOME THOUGHTS FROM VLADIMIR SOLOVIEV Introductory Note: This page is devoted to giving a reflection of some of the key reasoning of Vladimir Soloviev, the celebrated Russian philosopher, whose thought was a seminal force in the origins of the Russian Byzantine Catholic Church. His thought has been a rich source of inspiration and support for several generations of Russian thinkers, philosophers, theologians, poets and intellectuals, both Catholic and Orthodox alike. We present below some, but by no means all, of Soloviev's core thoughts on church unity and the role of the Holy See (the See of Rome), in order to give the late twentieth century reader a flavor for this thought that has had and continues to have such widespread influence. It is not our intention to foster any polemic by offering these texts, but simply to provide some insight into the philosophical and theological bases for the origins of our Church. The facts of Soloviev's writings, of his entry into communion with the Holy See, and of the origin and growth of our Church are matters of history beyond dispute; the texts presented here simply reflect or shed light on those facts. Greg Gaut is a professor of history at St. Mary's University of Minnesota; e-mail: ggaut@smumn.edu Christian Politics: Vladimir Solovyov's Social Gospel Theology Greg Gaut ON 28 MARCH 1881, the philosopher Vladimir Solovyov, then 28 years old, was lecturing on Slavophile themes to a large audience in St. Petersburg. Towards the end of the lecture, he mentioned the six members of the terrorist organization Narodnaia volya [The People s Will] who were then on trial for the assassination of Alexander II. He told the audience that the regicide laid before the new tsar the "unprecedented opportunity to affirm the Christian principle of all-forgiveness" by pardoning the assassins of his father. Some observers claimed that students in the audience responded with shouts of "bravo," apparently interpreting his words as an endorsement of the radical movement, and that older members of the audience shouted at him angrily. According to his own report, Solovyov felt compelled to return to the podium in order to avoid misunderstanding. He told the audience that his point was only that a Christian state should not employ the death penalty. Although Solovyov did not intend to endorse the revolutionaries, his speech caused a "scandal" and was brought to the attention of the authorities, including the Minister of the Interior and Tsar Alexander III himself. His call for "Christian all-forgiveness," however, had no effect on the outcome of the case. On April 3, the government hanged five of the defendants, and commuted to life imprisonment the sentence of the sixth, who was pregnant. The Tsar then decided to reprimand Solovyov for "inappropriate opinions" and temporarily stop him from lecturing. This leniency was no doubt based on the fact that the young man was well known as the rising intellectual star of conservative nationalist circles, and moreover, the son of the late historian Sergei Solovyov, who had been a tutor to the Tsar.

Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900)
LIFE. Solovyov was born in Moscow in 1853. His father, Sergej Mikhailovich, a professor at Moscow University, is universally recognized as one of Russia's greatest historians. After attending secondary school in Moscow, Vladimir enrolled at the university and began his studies there in the natural sciences in 1869, his particular interest at this time being biology. Already at the age of 13 he had renounced his Orthodox faith to his friends, accepting the banner of materialism perhaps best illustrated by the fictional character of Bazarov in Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons and the actual historical figure of Pisarev. During the first two or three years of study at the university Solovyov grew disenchanted with his ardent positivism and did poorly in his examinations. An excellent student prior to this time, there is no reason for us to doubt his intellectual gifts. Nevertheless, although he himself as well as his interpreters have attributed his poor performance to growing disinterest in his course of study, this reasoning may sound to us at least somewhat disingenuous. In any case, Solovyov subsequently enrolled as an auditor in the Historical-Philosophical Faculty, then passing the examination for a degree in June 1873.
At some point during 1872 Solovyov reconverted, so to speak, to Orthodoxy. During the academic year 1873-74 he attended lectures at the Moscow Ecclesiastic Academyan unusual step for a lay person. At this time Solovyov also began the writing of his magister's dissertation, several chapters of which were published in a Russian theological journal already before his formal defense of it in early December 1874. The death of his Moscow University philosophy teacher Pamfil Jurkevich created a vacancy that Solovyov surely harbored hopes of eventually filling. Nevertheless, despite being passed over, owing, at least in part, to his young age and lack of credentials, he was named a docent (lecturer) in philosophy. In spite of taking up his teaching duties with enthusiasm, within a few months Solovyov applied for a scholarship to do research abroad, primarily in London's British Museum.

Interview
Victor Samsonov answers Vladimir Solovyov
Vl.S. First traditional question... V.S. When and why I started to collect painting?
Vl.S. When is the question; why painting and not butterflies or Social Republic flags is clear.
V.S. Yes, painting live. Live and excite
VL.S. When, then?
V.S. If you ask ten poets, when they started writing verses, they will answer: "When I have fallen in love".
Vl.S. Then N.Gumilyov is eleventh. Remember? "When I have fallen in love, and I have always been in love, with poem, woman or with scent..."
V.S. That is right. But fist of my purchases (it was 1976) I made not for reasons of love but rather because I wanted to morally support persecuted artists.
Material side was conditional. For example, one of my favorite works by V.Makarenko (catalogue cover) I bought a few days before he left for Paris for 150 roubles. There are works for 100 roubles, one even for 50.
Later works by this artist were bought by State Russian Museum.

The Moscow „Religious-Philosophical Vladimir Solovyov Society" by Kristiane Burchardi, now published in: Forschungen zur osteuropäischen Geschichte vol. 53, Berlin 1999 "... kak my uzhe znaem, sam Solovyov ne sdelal vsech vyvodov, proistekajushchich iz priznanija znachenija i neobchodimosti juridicheskich garantij, politicheskoe credo russkogo zapadnichestva. (Sergej Bulgakov, 1903) Résumé Since the 19 th century the discourse on Russia’s future has been characterized by the split into „Slavophiles" and „Westernizers". At the beginning of the 20 th century a circle of Moscow intellectuals attempted to integrate the opposing factions by offering a new conception of the Russian self-identity. The members of this Society referred to the Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov, as to them his theme of „Godmanhood" seemed to be suitable to overcome the differences between East and West, between Russia and Europe. Their ideas for Russia’s future were intended as an alternative to socialist conceptions of society. Through this intention the Society has distinguished itself as a medium of pre-revolutionary non-socialist tradition which could be capable of stirring even the current debate on Russian self-identity. The subject of this interdisciplinary thesis is the Vladimir Solovyov Society (Russian abbr. RFO), an important circle of Moscow intellectuals of the early 20
