Thomas Reid
Thomas Reid (1710-1796) is a Scottish philosopher and one of the founders of the "common sense" school of philosophy. (Also included in the common sense school are such less well-known 18th century philosophers as James Beattie, George Campbell, and Dugald Stewart.) Reid is best known for his epistemology of sensation he believes that sensations serve to make us directly aware of real objects without the aid of any intervening medium and for his view of free will he holds that the only free actions are those that come about through a causal process originated by the agent. In the explication of both he offers perceptive and important criticisms of the philosophy of Locke, Berkeley and especially Hume. He is also well known for his criticisms of Locke's view of personal identity and Hume's view of causation. However, Reid also wrote on a wide variety of other philosophical topics including ethics, aesthetics and various topics in the philosophy of mind. After studying at the University of Aberdeen, Reid entered the ministry in New Machar in 1737. In 1748 he published a short essay entitled "An Essay on Quantity" which concerned Hutchison's

Thomas Reid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Thomas Reid (1710-1796), Scottish philosopher , and a contemporary of David Hume , was the founder of the so-called Scottish School of Common Sense , and played an integral role in the Scottish Enlightenment . He believed that common sense a term he used in a special philosophical sense is or at least should be at the foundation of all philosophical inquiry. In his day and for some years into the 19th century, he was regarded as more important than David Hume . He advocated direct realism , or common sense realism , and argued strongly against the so-called Theory of Ideas advocated by John Locke Descartes , and (in varying forms) nearly all Early Modern philosophers who came after them.

Thomas Reid
Thomas, the most recent addition to the Alliterates, has known the majority of the other members in both a professional and personal capacity for nearly a decade. He attended his first two gatherings as a guest, and it was through this interaction with the other members that they quickly noticed his striking good looks as being unparalleled amongst the entirety of them. At that point, inviting him to join their ranks on a more permanent basis and thus recognizing him as the most handsome Alliterate was a decision never in doubt. Born during a snowstorm in the mountains of Fort Collins, Colorado, in the very same hospital as fellow Alliterate Troy Denning, Thomas took his first airplane ride to Texas at six days of age, where cousins waving Cowboys-Packers playoff tickets before Superbowl I met his parents at the gate. Growing up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Thomas quickly learned to love pan-fried catfish, Tex-Mex, and 110-degree weather, and to hate poison ivy, fire ants, and boiled okra. In high school, Thomas once ran over his own trombone with his car. Thomas graduated high school convinced he was going to be a civil engineer, and thus often joins in deep, technical discussions on the finer aspects of "building things" with fellow Alliterate Jeff Grubb. But writing had been in Thomas’s blood since grade school and he eventually found his way to Austin, where he obtained a B.A. in History from the University of Texas in 1989. Right after graduating, Thomas made a living in various heroic capacities (like selling books and building wooden swing sets), just like every other well-paid history major. For the past ten years, Thomas has worked as both an editor and creative director for TSR, Inc./Wizards of the Coast, but his first love is spending late-night hours in a caffeine-induced nervous sweat, staring at the terminal, pounding the keys in a rapid-fire game of solitaire until inspiration strikes.

REID, THOMAS
March 1811, in Paris at the Tuileries palace. He was at first named the king of Rome, after the analogy of the heirs of-the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. By his birth the Napoleonic dynasty seemed to be finally established; but in three years it crumbled in the dust. At the time of the downfall of the empire (April 1814) Marie Louise and the king of Rome were at Blois wi’th Joseph and Jerome Bonaparte, who wished to keep them as hostages. This design, however, was frustrated. Napoleon abdicated in favour of his son; but events prevented the reign of Napoleon II. from being more than titular. While Napoleon repaired to Elba, his consort and child went to Vienna; and they remained in Austria during the Hundred Days (1815), despite efforts made by the Bonapartists to carry off the prince to his father at Paris. His education was confided chiefly to Count Dietrichstein, who found him precocious, volatile, passionate and fond of military affairs. The same judgment was given by Marshal Marmont, duke of Ragusa, who recognized the warlike strain in his character. His nature was sensitive, as appeared on his receiving the news of the death of his father in 1821. The upheaval in France in 1830 and the disturbances which ensued led many Frenchmen to turn their thoughts to Napoleon II.; but though Metternich dallied for a time with the French Bonapartists, he had no intention of inaugurating a Napoleonic revival. By this time, too, the duke’s health was on ‘the decline; his impatience of all restraint and his indulgence in physical exercise far beyond his powers aggravated a natural weakness of the chest, and he died on the 22nd of July 1832.
