My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.

Welcome to the new website of the TCNJ Ayn Rand Society, a student organization at The College of New Jersey. Use the directory on the left to navigate through our pages. On them you will find information about the Society and links to pages that we feel best reflect the ideas of Ayn Rand and of Objectivism. This is not to say, however, that we necessarily endorse everything that appears on these pages, or on the other pages to which these link. While there is much on these pages that captures the essence of Objectivism, there may also appear ideas that deviate from the philosophy to one degree or another.

RAND, Ayn Anthem London Cassell 1938 147 p., orig. cloth, very good copy, though without dustwrapper First edition of Ayn Rand's second novel. She could not find an American publisher, and when it did appear in U.S.A. in 1946 after the success of The Fountainhead it was in a revised text. It is a genuinely scarce book, as can be said of few modern firsts. The OCLC holdings are interesting: it is held by 17 American libraries, but apart from Congress and one university library, these are school and public libraries who presumably got it willy nilly on a wholesale basis at the time. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Sevin Seydi Rare Books ; click here for further details.

None of this is relevant to animals. Animals do not survive by rational thought (nor by sign languages allegedly taught to them by psychologists). They survive through inborn reflexes and sensory-perceptual association. They cannot reason. They cannot learn a code of ethics. A lion is not immoral for eating a zebra (or even for attacking a man). Predation is their natural and only means of survival; they do not have the capacity to learn any other.

(Third Row Center)

Equally revered by greedy bastards, Canadian prog-rock musicians, and misguided philosophy majors, Ayn Rand was a distinctly American phenomenon: an atheistic philosopher of self-interest as an ultimate good. And, as the Showtime original movie The Passion Of Ayn Rand shows, she was a lusty and passionate one, as well. As embodied by the perpetually terrific Helen Mirren, Rand is a fascinating, driven demon of a woman, a cruel, egotistical dynamo willing to destroy all those around her. Based on a book by Barbara Branden, the ex-wife of Rand's onetime lover and intellectual heir Nathaniel Branden, The Passion Of Ayn Rand tells the story of the epic, doomed romance between Nathaniel (Eric Stoltz) and Rand, a romance understandably frowned upon by Barbara (Julie Delpy) and wearily tolerated by Rand's long-suffering husband (a very good Peter Fonda). Though it begins on such a purple note that it initially seems less like a portrait of great thinkers than an especially pretentious episode of Red Shoe Diaries Passion takes a sober turn halfway through, evolving into an interesting, if uneven, portrait of people imprisoned by ideology. Like all great thinkers and/or ambitious college students, Rand and Nathaniel eventually discover that no matter how rational an ideology may be, people are ruled by irrational emotions. What makes

    Introduction
The following is a full transcript of the testimony by Ayn Rand before the United States House of Representatives' Committee on Un-American Activities (commonly known as the House Un-American Activities Committee, or HUAC) on October 20, 1947. To make Rand's testimony more meaningful to contemporary readers, this transcript includes notes with explanatory information. None of the speakers' words have been altered or omitted. Because the exact history of the hearings and Rand's role in them is widely misunderstood, substantial background material is also provided.
    Background
    The History of HUAC
The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) became a permanent (or "standing") committee of the House in January 1945. It had existed on a temporary basis since 1938. HUAC was supposed to investigate "un-American propaganda" in the United States. Although it also investigated pro-fascist or pro-Nazi activity, HUAC is most widely known for its investigations of suspected Communist influence in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Along with the investigation of Alger Hiss , the investigation of Communist influence in the motion picture industry is one of the defining episodes in the committee's history. Although HUAC would continue to exist into the 1960s, these memorable hearings are its best-known legacy. The committee's name was changed in 1969, and it was abolished in 1975, when jurisdiction over investigation of foreign influence was transferred to the House Judiciary Committee.

"America's abundance was not created by public sacrifices to 'the common good,' but by the productive genius of free men who pursued their own personal interests and the making of their own private fortunes." Let's start by defining our terms. A "value" is something you want to gain or keep. A lot of people think that life is a fundamental value, to be preserved at all costs. "Family values" are a bundle of warm fuzzies: taking the kids to a park, teaching them to be nice people, helping each other through life's difficulties. Values are conditions we deem to be good. They are outcomes that require effort to achieve and maintain, something worth fighting for. "Virtue" is a purposeful action, required to obtain or defend a value. The American Founding Fathers declared that freedom was a fundamental right; they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to the battle for American independence. If you are married to someone you love, the virtues of fidelity and honesty are actions that preserve an intimate partnership. If you are a banker, fidelity and honesty must be practiced to keep your job. Basic definitions concluded, we come to the controversial topic of standards. The purpose of having standards is to enable us to measure things, like the distance between London and San Francisco (5358 miles via British Airways, flying a Great Circle route, about 10 hours). Let's say, for instance, you decide that being rich is your No. 1 priority. If wealth is your basic standard of value, you'll measure everything in life according to its financial consequences. Telling someone the truth suddenly becomes a lot less important. Deciding who to marry is a question of which bachelor or heiress has the biggest fortune (or the greatest potential of earning one). If the Ten Commandments are your standard of value and virtue, everything in life is measured according to whether it was mentioned by Moses. Islamic revolutionaries select actions and targets according to the obligation of jihad. Zen masters organize their day around tea ceremonies and try to rid themselves of distracting passions. Catholic nuns and monks concentrate their efforts on transcendant communion with God, or they serve the needy, depending on which particular saint inspired their vows.
