Quine has made many contributions to logic, but in his philosophical writings he focuses on meaning and existence - the age old concerns of philosopher-man - and he thus continues the traditions begun by the ancient Greeks. Because he is America's most influential living philosopher, many of his concerns have become major concerns of his contemporaries. [from introduction to "Essays on the Philosophy of W. V. This essay, which stands as the foundation for virtually all work in the subsequent tradition of Quine and Davidson, is only about 25 pages long, but one would be hard-pressed to find any other single essay in the last century that has generated such a radical 'revolution' in analytic philosophy... Notebooks
    Willard Van Orman Quine, 19082000
(Wed Mar 7 10:43:01 2001) American logician and philosopher; perhaps the most eminent analytical philosopher of the late 20th century; a student of Whitehead, and largely in the spirit of the Logical Positivists , with a good dose of pragmatism mixed in; teacher of Daniel Dennett (whom I hope to see become the most eminent analytical philosopher of the early 21st century). Quine's logical armamentarium was unrivalled, and he deployed it on behalf of some of the most peculiar notions one could hope to run across, such as the infamous Quine-Duhem thesis (that no theory can ever be refuted). This tendency led Dennett to coin the verb ``to quine'', meaning ``to deny a distinction others feel to be obvious.'' Quite unfairly, he supplemented his logical artillery with rhetorical sappers, in the form of one of the most elegant prose styles ever to flow from the pen of an American author; he could be a character in Jack Vance . He calls to mind excruciatingly formal suppers from ages now past when the fish-knife was de rigueur and where a scandalized hush would greet any lapse of punctillio. Or rather, one of the exceedingly refined diners at those suppers, for whom the proper use of the fish-knife is automatic, second nature and almost first; for one of the qualities of Quine's writing is that he makes everything, not least his minute clarity and precision, seem easy, obvious and spontaneous. (Try doing this talking about anything in the world, never mind the concept of ``ordered pair''.)

Suppose you wanted to find some information on the Web about a philosopher. You might begin by trying to find his or her homepage, if it exists. This can be done most efficiently using " Ahoy! The Homepage Finder ". Failing that, you might try using a search engine, say, " Yahoo! Arts: Humanities: Philosophy: Philosophers ". For Willard van Orman Quine, neither of these options yields much useful information. Alternatively, you might use many search engines to find as many pages as you can that discuss Quine, and then save links to them. One way to do this easily is via the " go2net MetaCrawler "; a search on the phrase "Willard van Orman Quine" yielded many sites, including the one under review.

Do you search for Truth or Knowledge ... The Harvard philosopher Willard van Orman Quine had the question mark on his typewriter replaced with a logical symbol. Asked by a reporter if he missed the question mark, Quine replied, "I deal in certainties." Quine's certainties were of the scientific sort: he famously said that "philosophy of science is philosophy enough." For Quine, this meant that philosophy had to give up its pretenses and recognize that it had no special claim to truth. The Philosopher
    On Quine:
Willard Quine died on Christmas Day at the age of 92. He was one of the 20th Century's greatest thinkers, whose work in logic and epistemology challenged philosophy's perpetual quest for transcendent meaning. The search for truth beyond immediate human experience, Quine thought, was not only pointless, it was actually a barrier to the pursuit of knowledge. The philosophy of Quine, this hour on the Connection. Guests: Alexander George, professor of Philosophy at

    Mathematical Logic
    by Willard Van Orman Quine
Informal logic is an inescapable part of life as a human being with a plugged-in brain, and not a vegetable or a raving lunatic; even post-structuralists and critical theorists may be observed, off-duty , saying ``That can't be right, because...'' Formal logic is a notoriously dry subject, initiated in the West by the prince of pedants, Aristotle. Mathematical logic, which has emerged only in the last hundred and fifty years, is well known to be abstruse and terrifying, and has made the logician into a creature mathematicians view in much the same way others view mathematicians, i.e. a repository of incomprehensible knowledge. When, in 1995, the Bertrand Russell e-mail list attempted to list all those who had read all three volumes of Whitehead and Russell's Principia Mathematica, they came up with less than two dozen names; two of those people died while the list was being compiled. A few books on mathematical logic have done well, such as Martin Gardner's

    Willard Van Orman Quine
    On the Analytic/Synthetic dichotomy
    On the Definition of Logic
    On the Analytic/Synthetic dichotomy
It is obvious that truth in general depends on both language and extra-linguistic fact. The statement 'Brutus killed Caesar' would be false if the world had been different in certain ways, but it would also be false if the word 'killed' happened rather to have the sense of 'begat'. Thus one is tempted to suppose in general that the truth of a statement is somehow analysable into a linguistic component and a factual component. Given this supposition it next seems reasonable that in some statements the factual component should be null; and that these are the analytic statements. But for all its a priori reasonableness, a boundary between the analytic and synthetic statements simply has not been drawn. That there is such a distinction to be drawn at all is an unempirical dogma of empiricists, a metaphysical article of faith. Two Dogmas of Empiricism
    On the Definition of Logic
If pressed to supplement Tweedledee's ostensive definition of logic with a discursive definition of the same subject, I would say that logic is the systematic study of the logical truths. Pressed further, I would say that a sentence is logically true if all sentences with its grammatical structure are true. Pressed further still, I would say to read this book.
