Porphyry's Letter to His Wife Marcella
Concerning the Life of Philosophy and the Ascent to the Gods
Translated by Alice Zimmern
Introduction by David Fideler
At an elderly age Porphyry the Neoplatonist married Marcella, a widow of a close friend who had seven children, but shortly thereafter he was called away, urged on by the gods, to attend to the affairs of the Greeks. Out of print for nearly a hundred years, Porphyry's Letter to Marcella is a personal and moving document. In addition to explaining why he chose Marcella as his partner in marriage, Porphyry consoles his wife and reminds Marcella not to neglect the life of philosophy, conceived of here as the care of the soul in its re-ascent to the One. Porphyry writes of how God is best honored and of the divine principles which must be upheld by the philosopher in daily life. He notes that "no things can be more entirely opposed to one another than a life of pleasure and ease, and the ascent to the gods." Porphyry here describes the preparatory stages of that ascent, and how the ascent is accomplished.

Various extracts from: 'On Abstinence from Animal Food':
from The Extended Circle by Jon Wynne-Tyson. Direct link: amazon.co.uk But to deliver animals to be slaughtered and cooked, and thus be filled with murder, not for the sake of nutriment and satisfying the wants of nature, but making pleasure and gluttony the end of such conduct, is transcendently iniquitous and dire. He who abstains from anything animate ... will be much more careful not to injure those of his own species. For he who loves the genus will not hate any species of animals. And is it not absurd, since we see that many of our own species live from sense alone, but do not possess intellect and reason; and since we also see that many of them surpass the most terrible of wild beasts in cruelty, anger, and rapine, being murderous of their children and their parents, and also being tyrants and the tools of kings [is it not, I say, absurd] to fancy that we ought to act justly towards these, but that no justice is due from us to the ox that ploughs, the dog that is fed with us, and the animals that nourish us with their milk and adorn our bodies with their wool? Is not such an opinion most irrational and absurd? ... if we depend on the argument of necesstiy or utility, we cannot avoid admitting by implication that we ourselves were created only for the sake of certain destructive animals, such as crocodiles and snakes and other monsters, for we are not in the least benefited by them. On the contrary, they seize and destroy and devour men whom they meet - in so doing acting not at all more cruelly than we. Nay, they act this savagely through want and hunger; we from insolent wantonness and luxurious pleasure, amusing ourselves, as we do, also in the Circus and in the murderous sports of the chase. By thus acting, a barbarous and brutal nature becomes strengthened in us, which renders men insensible to the feeling of pity and compassion. Those who first perpetrated these iniquities fatally blunted the most important part of the (civilised) soul. Therefore it is that Pythagoreans consider kindness and gentleness to the lower animals to be an exercise of philanthropy and gentleness.

INTRODUCTION The major products from porphyry copper deposits are copper and molybdenum or copper and gold. The term porphyry copper now includes engineering as well as geological considerations; It refers to large, relatively low grade, epigenetic, intrusion-related deposits that can be mined using mass mining techniques. Geologically, the deposits occur close to or in granitic intrusive rocks that are porphyritic in texture. There are usually several episodes of intrusive activity, so expect swarms of dykes and intrusive breccias. The country rocks can be any kind of rock, and often there are wide zones of closely fractured and altered rock surrounding the intrusions. As is described following, this country rock alteration is distinctive and changes as you approach mineralization. Where sulphide mineralization occurs, surface weathering often produces rusty-stained bleached zones from which the metals have been leached; if conditions are right, these may redeposit near the water table to form an enriched zone of secondary mineralization. top of page..

New Update 5/24/01
A little while ago, i mentioned to x that i was a die-hard Porphyry houses fan, and she asked me to write something to the group about it, as she has known an astrologer that she respected who uses Porphyry houses. What a great invitation to stick a few forks in wherever people are attached to their viewpoints! i.e. don't take this personally!
I know a lot of people use Placidus and Koch houses, mainly because their grannies used them, and their granny's granny used them, and so on down the line. I think they leave something to be desired (how's that for diplomacy! I'm learning!).

6-km Vertical Cross Section Through Porphyry Copper Deposits, Yerington District, Nevada: Multiple Intrusions, Fluids, and Metal Sources
Marco T. Einaudi, Stanford University
Stanford, California, U.S.A.
Gaps in understanding of individual porphyry copper deposits result from limited exposures of the tops, sides, and bottoms of ore zones. In order to build models of porphyry systems, investigators have relied on observations from numerous localities that are thought to represent different paleolevels. This approach does not account for variability between deposits and for important features located several kilometers below and to the side of ore zones. Missing are direct observation and analysis of: potential source regions for fluids and their dissolved components; deep pathways for inward-convecting and thermally prograding non-magmatic fluids whose presence is predicted by numerical models of mass and heat transport; the effects of prograding fluids on cycling of metals and other components; and time-space relations of intrusions and hydrothermal evolution on a system-scale.

The description of attitudes, directions, and the interpretation presented below is given in the context of Jurassic time, rather than present day.

Sulfidation State.
McKinstry (1959, 1963) and Barton (1970) applied the terms "sulfur content" and "sulfidation state", respectively, to denote the relative values of the chemical potential of sulfur implied by sulfide mineral assemblages in ore deposits. Both authors noted the general tendancy for sulfidation state to increase as unbuffered hydrothermal solutions evolve from high to low temperatures in base- metal veins associated with felsic igneous rocks. The concept of sulfidation state was put on a firm theoretical and experimental base by Skinner and Barton (1967, 1979) and applied to base-metal veins by Meyer and Hemley (1967). The sulfidation state of hydrothermal fluids can be classified on a continuous scale on the basis of key sulfidation reactions, as defined in Table 1 below (based on Skinner and Barton, 1979). In

Today, a new look has evolved. Earthtone colors of gray, brown, rust, buff and violet are used to create a 1990s appearance. The beauty of PORPHYRY is in its coloration. PORPHYRY is a volcanic rock formed from a slow cooling process of igneous material. It has a high compression breaking point and a high resistance to chemical agents. PORPHYRY'S durability makes it extremely suitable for paving pedestrian walkways, recreational areas, town squares and roads. It is non-slip and not attacked by salt. This makes it appropriate for use in roads where harsh winter conditions exist and in waterfront projects. SETTS / CUBES PORPHYRY cubes are available in surface sizes 4-6cm, 6-8cm, 8-10cm,10-12cm, 12-15cm, and 14-18cm. The thickness is similar to the surface dimension.

Mineral Deposit Example: The Porphyry Copper Deposit
Adopted from unpublished figures by Spencer J. Titley, University of Arizona.
What is a Porphyry Copper Deposit?
A Porphyry Copper Deposit derives its name from a porphyritic stock located at the center of the mineral deposit. (This correlates to the red body in the center of the diagram above). A stock is a cylindrical igneous mass working its way up through the earth's crust. The word porphyritic describes the bimodal nature of the minerals within the stock. Some of these minerals are very large (up to 10 cm in length) and the rest are microscopic in nature. The surface expression of these types of systems (if they reach the surface) are usually strato-volcanos. However, because most of these system formed during the Laramide mountain building event some 40-80 million years ago, any surfacial expression has been eroded away. The surrounding country rock, which has been intruded by the stock, is often metamorphosed. Metamorphic rocks are those which have undergone some typeof heating or increased pressure. This heat and pressure causes preexisting rocks to be altered into a new type of rock.(This is depicted by the material surrounding the red porphyritic stock in the diagram above). An enriched mineral blanket will usually form near the surface of these deposits. This blanket forms because of percolation of rain water through the rocks. This percolation dissolves minerals near the surface and redeposits them at a specific horizon. This horizon becomes the enriched mineral blanket. This body can be better visualized in the

PORPHYRY
Agathon Like all those who follow the spiritual path, Porphyry found himself at the edge of the abyss of meaninglessness, where the world appears as an intolerable burden and the realm of spirit remains empty. One evening Porphyry was on the verge of suicide when suddenly, Plotinus, divining his wretched condition, came to him and instructed him to go to Sicily for a rest. Away from the intense orbit of Plotinus, Porphyry regained resolve and perspective, and Plotinus continued instructions by sending nine additional treatises to him. The physical separation was accompanied by a spiritual reunion with the mind and heart of the teacher, though Porphyry sorely regretted being absent when Plotinus died. Having been charged by Plotinus with editing the treatises for dissemination and use, Porphyry returned to Rome, assumed direction of the school and organized his master's thoughts into the magnificent Enneads. He became a teacher in his own right, giving focus to the neo-Platonic movement in his Sententiae
