C H A R L E S S. P E I R C E Charles Sanders Peirce was born on 10 September 1839 in Cambridge, Massachusetts when Darwin was only 30 years oldand he lived until 1914, the year World War I began. His father, Benjamin Peirce Intellectually, Charles Peirce and his father had a lot in common. One curious statement to this effect comes from a letter from Thomas Davidson to William Torrey Harris. After listening to Charles give a lecture to the Harvard Philosophy Club on 21 May 1879, Davidson wrote to Harris: "Peirce's paper was captious, bright, and poor. After it was over, I had a long talk with Prof. Ben. Peirce, who undertook to prove to me mathematically that space has four dimensions. The Peirce's are all a little crazy, I think." Just 7 years later, Charles's friend, Francis Ellingwood Abbot, made this entry in his diary: Attended a meeting of "philosophers,' including John Fiske, James, Royce, and Perry, at Prof. J. M. Peirce's, 4 Kirkland Place, to welcome Prof. Chas. S. Peirce, of Johns Hopkins, (my classmate), and hear from him a new "logical theory of Evolution." Peirce begins with absolute or pure potentiality, with absolute chance or negation of all law, even logical, to evolve at last Absolute Being and Absolute Lawin fact, to evolve Infinity out of Zero, God out of Nothing. Brilliant, ingenious, andimpossible. Had a wine supper, during which Charley continued to spin his glistening cobweb. The Peirce family was well connected in academic and scientific circles, and Charles grew up on intimate terms with the leading figures. He was regarded as a prodigy both in science and philosophy, and more brilliant in mathematics than even his father. Although

Charles Sanders Peirce (pronounced PURSE), the philosophical founder of pragmatism, was born in 1839 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father, Benjamin Peirce, was a distinguished Harvard mathematician and astronomer.
"When I was a babe in philosophy," he wrote, "my bottle was filled from the udders of Kant," whose Critique of Pure Reason Peirce studied for three years as a teenager. He studied at Harvard University from 1855 until he received his M.A. in 1862 and lectured there on the philosophy of science in 1864-5. He also worked as a scientist for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey for thirty years, from 1861 to 1891. The ideas presented in William Jame's paper "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results" and in James' whole philosophy deviated so much from Peirce's, that he re-named his ideas from "pragmatism" to "pragmaticism", a name, Peirce said, "which is ugly enough to be safe from kidnappers."
In 1871, he founded, along with William James, and future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., "The Metaphysical Club", whose purpose was to allow its members, the cream of Boston intellectuals, to discuss their philosophical ideas. (The organization's name was partly a joke since its members generally did not consider metaphysics a valid field of study.)

Peirce, Charles Sanders 1839-1914, American philosopher, b. Cambridge, Mass., grad. Harvard, 1859; son of Benjamin Peirce. Except for occasional lectures he rejected the regimen of academic life and was in government service with the Geodetic Survey for many years. Regarding logic as the beginning of all philosophical study, Peirce felt that the meaning of an idea was to be found in an examination of the consequences to which the idea would lead. This principle was published in 1878 in Popular Science Monthly, using the term pragmatism , which was later used by William James with acknowledgment. The influence of Peirce is clearly seen in the works of Josiah Royce and John Dewey, but recognition of his importance was delayed because of the scarcity of published works. He left many fragmentary manuscripts, but the only book published during his lifetime was Photometric Researches (1878). After his death his major essays were edited by M. R. Cohen in

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) is regarded by many as the greatest American philosopher there has been. Best known as the founder of pragmatism - the philosophy that assesses the meaning of what we say by its practical consequences - his writings cover an enormous range of subjects. A highly original thinker, Peirce's influence can be found in ethics, aesthetics, symbolic logic, religion, epistemology and metaphysics, as well as scientific topics. The greater part of Peirce's papers were unpublished during his lifetime and upon his death several hundred manuscripts were left to Harvard University. The editors succeeded in creating an order out of what had seemed to all, including Peirce himself, to be a disarray of papers and fragments. When the Collected Papers were published, the philosophical world recognized for the first time the depth, variety and power of Peirce's philosophy. The 8-volume collection includes Peirce's writings on general philosophy, logic, pragmatism, metaphysics, experimental science, scientific method and philosophy of mind, as well as reviews and correspondence. Out of print for many years, this major work is once again available to libraries and scholars.

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) was born in Cambridge, Massachuetts.
Comparing and contrasting the Theories of Descartes and Peirce
For many people, even if they don't know very much about philosophy, they know the name Descartes. Those who know something about the subject would probably agree that Rene Descartes was one of the most influential thinkers, even to this day. In contrast to Descartes' way of thinking is Charles Peirce's philosophy. Although Peirce is less well known outside the philosophical realm, his thoughts have been influential in the formation of a philosophy called Pragmatism, as well as the development of American society. We are going to be examining their opposing views and their influence on our own thinking. Rene Descartes was alive in the early part of the 17th century. His basic concern is overcoming doubt. How can we overcome doubt? Is there a method that we can use that is applicable in all citations? Descartes wants to be apodictic, which is absolutely certain, about his claims. In order to do this he must begin with a foundation. This foundation must be apodictic as well if the rest of his claims are to be considered true. Descartes also wants to use a method that is logical and the idea of knowledge as systematic. In order to understand why Descartes makes the claims that he does we must first understand how he draws his conclusions. Critical to his whole theory is his need for a foundation. Since we all come from distinct backgrounds and have different inherent beliefs and judgments, it is difficult for us to come to an agreement on issues such as truth. In order to avoid this problem of who is right and why, Descartes tries come up with a method that can be used by anyone to demonstrate 'truth'. If we begin with principles that we all acknowledge as correct, we can use this method to come to an agreement about what is true. Descartes wants to make the process of acquiring knowledge into a formal procedure, so that it can not be disputed.

Founder of pragmatism- new methods and ways of treating truth and meaning.
Derived that human beliefs are originated through "habits of action," and truth defined as inquiry.
Developed pragmatic theory that an innate correlation is present between meaning and action, where the meaning or truth of an idea is to be found in its consequences or "conceivable sensible effects" in human experience ("…our conception of the effects is the whole of our conception of the object.")
Therefore, truth or meaning is dependent on the subject’s conception or paradigm on an idea based on his experiences, making it ever changing; "that reality, as well as human knowledge of it, is constantly evolving, as is morality. What is good or evil… is dependent on its practical outcome… on its effects on human behavior."(grolier 1995)
Believed that "all beliefs, whether scientific of religious, were fallible and criticizable."

    Charles Sanders Peirce
If, however, no law subsists other than an expression of actual facts, the future is entirely indeterminate and so is general to the highest degree. Indeed, nothing would exist but the instantaneous state; whereas it is easy to show that if we are going to be so free in calling elements fictions an instant is the first thing to be called fictitious. But I confess I do not take pains accurately to answer a doctrine so monstrous, and just at present out of vogue.
