The son of James Mill , a friend and follower of Jeremy Bentham , John Stuart Mill was subjected to a rigorous education at home: he mastered English and the classical languages as a child, studied logic and philosophy extensively, read the law with John Austin , and then embarked on a thirty-five career with the British East India Company at the age of seventeen. (He also suffered through a severe bout of depression before turning twenty-one.) Despite such a rich background, Mill credited the bulk of his intellectual and personal development to his long and intimate association with Harriet Hardy Taylor . They were devoted friends for two decades before the death of her husband made it possible for them to marry in 1852; she died in Avignon six years later. Mill continued to write and to participate in political affairs, serving one term in Parliament (1865-68). The best source of information about Mill's life is his own Autobiography Philosophically, Mill was a radical

Mill, John Stuart
John Stuart Mill (1806-73) is an original critical thinker, whose contribution to poetic theory has been underestimated partly because some of his most innovative ideas lie buried in essays not explicitly devoted to poetics and partly because his most celebrated statements about poetry are not his most original. Mill's well-known antithesis "Eloquence is heard, poetry is overheard" (1-348), for example, is now seen as a mere Romantic commonplace that has helped perpetuate the myth that Mill is wed to a private, narrowly emotive theory of poetry. Equally misleading is Mill's assertion that poetic utterances about lions that look like statements made by naturalists "intent on stating the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" (347) are not designed to state the truth at all. It is too often assumed that in making this claim Mill is merely anticipating I. A. Richards 's overly simple distinction between scientific statements and the emotive utterances of the poet, whose sentences consist of "pseudo-statements."
In fact, Mill is never entirely happy with the distinction he draws between science's descriptive language and the emotive language of poetry. His real originality as a literary theorist lies in efforts to extend the meaning of the prize word "truth" so that it includes versions of the world that can still be judged as right or wrong but by different, though no less exacting, criteria than those the philosopher applies to a logical

A precocious child, he was educated privately by his father, James Mill. In 1823, abandoning the study of law, he became a clerk in the East India company, where he rose to become head of the examiner's office by the time of the company's dissolution (1858). During this period he contributed to various periodicals and met with discussion groups, one of which included Thomas Macaulay, to explore the problems of political theory. His A System of Logic (1843) was followed in 1848 by the Principles of Political Economy, which influenced English radical thought. In 1851, following the death of her husband, he married Harriet Taylor, whom he had loved for 20 years. She died in 1858, and Mill, profoundly affected, dedicated to her the famous On Liberty (1859), on which they had worked together. In 1863

Pappas broilar
Sjå for deg ein treåring som lærer gresk.

John Stuart Mill: On Liberty John Stuart Mill, one of the foremost nineteenth-century spokesmen for liberalism, advocated Utilitarianism in ethics, i.e., the view that we should each act so as to promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Yet he was a champion of individual's rights, calling, among other things, for more power and freedom for women. In his treatise On Liberty he argues that in the past the danger had been that monarchs held power at the expense of the common people and the struggle was one of gaining liberty by limiting such governmental power. But now that power has largely passed into the hands of the people at large through democratic forms of government, the danger is that the majority denies liberty to individuals, whether explicitly through laws, which he calls "acts of public authority," or more subtly through morals and social pressure, which he calls "collective opinion." What does Mill mean by "the tyranny of the majority"? The aim, therefore, of patriots was to set limits to the power which the ruler should be

Mill, John Stuart
Mill, John Stuart was born in London on May 20, 1806. His father, James Mill, introduced him to the classics at a very early age. At 17 he was versed in Greek literature and philosophy, chemistry, botany, psychology, and law. He proved later one of the greatest liberal thinkers. He developed the utilitarian doctrines of his father and Jeremy Bentham in Utilitarianism (1863). According to this philosophy, an action is right or wrong if its consequences are good or bad. In political economy John Stuart Mill advocated policies consistent with individual liberty. In his most popular work, On Liberty , he stated that liberty was at the mercy of social or political tyranny. In Considerations on Representative Government he enlightens us on conflicting theories on political representation. John Stuart Mill supported public ownership of natural resources, equality for women, and compulsory education. He entered Parliament in 1865 but failed to secure his reelection in 1868. He died in Avignon, France in 1873. His other major works include Principles of Political Economy The Subjection of Women (1869), his

John Stuart Mill, 1806-1873 "On Liberty", by John Stuart Mill This classic discusses the need for social liberty, or protection from the "tyranny of the masses". When the majority, or the most vocal number, gain control, all members of society must be protected by limiting the extent to which government can exert control over personal freedoms. Belief
O ne person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who have only interests.
    Courage
T hough the practice of chivalry fell even more sadly short of its theoretic standard than practice generally falls below theory, it remains one of the most precious monuments of the moral history of our race, as a remarkable instance of a concerted and organized attempt by a most disorganized and distracted society, to raise up and carry into practice a moral ideal greatly in advance of its social condition and institutions; so much so as to have been completely frustrated in the main object, yet never entirely inefficacious, and which has left a most sensible, and for the most part a highly valuable impress on the ideas and feelings of all subsequent times.
    Eccentricity
E ccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of character has abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor, and moral courage which it contained.

T he only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good, in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it.

Third edition. John Stuart Mill's copy from his library at St Véran, Avignon. First published in 1865, each edition of this book was carefully revised and embellished by Mill with footnotes dealing with objections bestowed upon the previous edition. By December 1866 Mill had completed three quarters of the revision, writing to George Grote from Avignon "some new matter I have inserted will, I think, add to the intrinsic value of the book". The work contains Mill's most forthright exposition of phenomenalism which faces the ultimate metaphysical difficulties of every question touched in Mill's Logic. It is considered by some to be his best book, though Packe, his biographer, wrote that it bore a striking a resemblance in many ways to his father's Fragment on Mackintosh. "The years from about 1840 to 1847 are almost a complete blank in our knowledge of Mill's private life and the character of his connection with Mrs Taylor. We have scarcely any documents belonging to this period and few other contemporary sources of interest. It is probable that it was at the beginning of this time that they had become aware of the scandalous talk about them, had learnt to exercise caution, and that they withdrew almost completely from society...With the abandonment of the editorship of the London and Westminster Review in 1840 Mill had also given up the attempt to inspire an active radical group to effective political action, and thereafter devoted all his free time to the composition of his major theoretical treatises. The Logic was completed at the end of 1841, although it appeared only in March 1843..." Hayek, John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor. Click here to see an image of this item.
