HERBERT MARCUSE
Philosopher for Our Time
For the new year there is now ready a wide range of links to Marcuse resources on the Internet. I strongly encourage you to visit the Illuminations website run by Douglas Kellner. It contains a large number of excellent essays on Marcuse and related thinkers. If you'd like to get directly acquainted with Marcuse's philosophy a great place to start would be with his short book An Essay on Liberation , written during the high tide of '60's radicalism. From there you might move on to the earlier Eros and Civilization and One-Dimensional Man , his two most challenging and rewarding works.

Name
Herbert Marcuse Dates
Born: July, 19th 1898 in Berlin, Germany Died: July 29th, 1979 in Starnberg, Germany Ph.D. from the University of Freiburg: 1922 Joins the Frankfurt School: 1933 Flees Germany: 1933 Biography: Herbert Marcuse was a German philosopher who was originally born in Berlin but he had to flee his post teaching at the University of Freiburg due to Nazi persecution over his Jewish origins and Marxist politics. He is most widely known because of his efforts to combine the writings of both Marx and Freud in an attempt to create a novel critique of modern industrial society. Marcuse became a hero of radicals with the New Left after the publication of his book One Dimensional Man (1964), where argued that the social and political repression in contemporary society had a fundamentally sexual basis. He also argued that the corporate basis of contemporary American culture had a tendency to inhibit human freedom in ways which people were unable to see and, hence, unable to resist. One of the primary methods of accomplishing this, according to Marcuse, is by getting people to believe that the satisfaction of material desires is sufficient for leading a happy and productive life. This is what causes Americans to become one-dimensional, embracing a consumerist culture which lacks creativity and life.

NUMBER: QUOTATION: Freedom of enterprise was from the beginning not altogether a blessing. As the liberty to work or to starve, it spelled toil, insecurity, and fear for the vast majority of the population. If the individual were no longer compelled to prove himself on the market, as a free economic subject, the disappearance of this freedom would be one of the greatest achievements of civilization.

MARCUSE, Herbert (1898-1979) By Lloyd Spencer Marcuse emerged as philosopher and scholar within Weimar Germany. After participating in the attempted Social Democratic revolution in Berlin in 1917 and becoming familiar with the works of Marx he went to study with Heidegger at Freiburg University in 1928. Marcuse’s hopes for a radical new beginning for philosophy (and a synthesis between existentialism and Marxism) led him back to Hegel. In 1932 he published a major study of Hegel and in 1933 he published the first major review of rediscovered Marx's 1844 Manuscripts. In 1934 he fled Nazism and emigrated to the USA, where he lived for the rest of his life. Reason and Revolution (1941) provided a study of the genesis of Hegel's thought and drew Hegel and Marx closer together as social philosophers responding to revolutionary possibilities (and social movements) in the society of their time. Marcuse's thinking was closely related to the hegelian Marxism — or "Critical Theory" — developed by the members of the Frankfurt School (The Institute for Social Research) under the guidance of HORKHEIMER and ADORNO. Eros and Civilization (1955) presented a reading of Freud influenced by Marcuse's own existentialist form of Marxism. In it he upheld the view that the liberation of society would need to overcome, or at least transform, that repression which Freud had regarded as constitutive of ego-formation and therefore as a constant in civilization. In 1958 Marcuse published

He was educated at the Univ. of Freiburg and with Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer founded the Frankfurt Institute of Social Research. A special target of the Nazis because of his Jewish origins and Marxist politics, he emigrated (1934) to the United States and became a naturalized citizen in 1940. Marcuse served with the Office of Strategic Services during World War II and later taught at Harvard, Columbia, and Brandeis before becoming (1965) professor of philosophy at the Univ. of California at San Diego. He is best known for his attempt to synthesize Marxian and Freudian theories into a comprehensive critique of modern industrial society. In One Dimensional Man (1964), his most popular book, he argued for a sexual basis to the social and political repression in contemporary America; the book made him a hero of New Left radicals and provided a rationale for the student revolts of the 1960s in the United States and Europe. His other works include
