Emmanuel Levinas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Emmanuel Levinas ) was a philosopher orginally from Lithuania , who moved to France where he wrote most of his works in French. He was naturalized in 1930. Levinas was deeply influenced by Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger , whom he met at the university of Freiburg . After the Second World War, Levinas became a leading thinker in France. Levinas work is based on the ethics of the Other . The Other is not knowable and cannot be made into an object, as is done by traditional metaphysics (called ontology by Levinas). Some of his work is rather hard to understand.

Death and Responsibility : The 'Work' of Levinas
(Suny Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy) by Dennis King Keenan. The work of Levinas has, for the most part, been too easily read. Levinas's use of words like "responsibility" and "God" gives some readers reason to dismiss his work as insufficiently attentive to the whispered suspicions of our times, while giving others reason to accept his work as a clarion call guiding them out of this wilderness of disorienting whispers. Richly informed by readings of Heidegger, Derrida, and Blanchot, Keenan argues that the notion of responsibility at the heart of Levinas's notion of ethics is intimately dependent upon his account of death... Adieu
by Jaques Derrida
Translated by Pascale-Anne Brault and Michael Naas (This text was delivered as the funeral oration for Emmanuel Levinas on 28 December 1995) For a long time, for a very long time, I've feared having to say adieu to Emmanuel Levinas. I knew that my voice would tremble at the moment of saying it, and especially saying it aloud, right here, before him, so close to him, pronouncing this word of adieu , this word which in a certain sense I get from him, a word that he will have taught me to think or to pronounce otherwise. By meditating upon what Emmanuel Levinas wrote about the French word "adieu" which I will recall in a few momentsI hope to find a sort of encouragement to speak here. And I would like to do so with unadorned, naked words, words as childlike and disarmed as my sorrow.... Everything that has happened here has happened through him, thanks to him, and we have had the good fortune not only of receiving it while living, from him living, as a responsibility entrusted by the living to the living, but also the good fortune of owing it to him with a light and innocent debt. One day, speaking of his research on death and of what it owed Heidegger at the very moment when it was moving away from him, Levinas wrote: "It distinguishes itself from Heidegger's thought, and it does so in spite of the debt that every contemporary thinker owes to Heideggera debt that one often regrets" . Now, the good fortune of our debt toward Levinas is that we can, thanks to him, assume it and affirm it without regret, in the joyous innocence of admiration. It is of the order of this unconditional

Without a doubt, Levinas' principal concern in philosophy is how the self meets the Other. His magnum opus, Totality and Infinity , bears the subtitle, An Essay on Exteriority . Exteriority refers to a region beyond the horizons of the self, that which "is" beyond transcendental subjectivity. If there are such "beings" as other selves, that is, other subjects, they exist out there in the exterior. But if knowledge is confined to the interior as Levinas says it must be then the Other cannot be known. He writes, "There is in knowledge, in the final account, an impossibility of escaping the self; hence sociality cannot have the same structure as knowledge" (EI 60).
This view that limits knowledge to the interior of conscious life rests on epistemological discoveries made by Descartes, Kant, and those that follow in their tradition. Ideas are always my ideas. They are alleged interpretations of my perceptions. But, these perceptions are also ideas, hence interpretations. What it is, then, that representations (perceptual or conceptual) re-present becomes a philosophical question along with others. Does knowledge refer at all to any extra-mental domain? If so, then how does it refer? If it turns out that knowledge is limited to the interior, then are there other subjects who represent the world as I do? If there are, then how can we know this fact?
