Hypatia
Online Resources Texts: Hypatia Texts: Hypatia Book Series Used Books: Hypatia ... Are you an Author? Dear Future People by Anne Nolting Dear Future People is a novel which describes the climax of the Hellenic Age in Egypt. Events follow historic accounts of the civil war between Rome and Constantinople, the destruction of the Temple of Serapis, the ethnic cleansing and massacre of Gothic youth, and a trip down the Nile to seek a prophesy for Emperor Theodosius. Hypatia, a woman, was destined to stand at the center of this time of political power struggle. In translation, quotes from the period are woven into the story. Hypatia was born in the later part of the Roman Empire, an era when women were not free to pursue careers. This was a time when orthodox belief effectively wiped out centuries of scientific discovery. Ancient Greek works were torched and scholars were murdered. Hypatia was the last proprietor of the Hellenic Age wonder, the Library of Alexandria. She is portrayed as a young adult facing the issues of a changing world. The reader will discover uncanny parallels to many current situations within the United States and, indeed, the world. Hypatia, a real, historically documented heroine, is a find for today's young adults who are searching for strong, non-fiction role models.

Hypatia of Alexandria
(ca. 370 - 416 CE.)
RAPHAEL, The School of Athens detail ): Hypatia (likeness of Francesco Maria della Rovere
Hypatia of Alexandria , born circa 370 CE., is the first woman documented to have made a substantial contribution to the development of mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy and to have done so openly, in her own name, as a woman. According to the Byzantine encyclopedia, The Suda , her father was Theon, the last head of the Museum at Alexandria. Together, they strove to preserve the spirit of Greek mathematics and philosophic inquiry, during a time when mathematics and science were considered heresy by zealous Christians who enforced the Christian Doctrines of the Roman Empire. As a young woman, she traveled to Athens and Italy. Upon her return to Alexandria, around 400 CE., Hypatia achieved prominence as the recognized head of the Neoplatonist school in Alexandria, where letters addressed simply to “the philosopher” were routinely delivered to her. There she expounded upon the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle and lectured on mathematics, astronomy, mechanics, and philosophy, in particular teaching a variant of Neoplatonism which was distinguished from the mysticism of her predecessors by its greater scientific emphasis. In addition to her mathematical works, Hypatia also developed an apparatus for distilling water, an instrument for measuring the level of water, a plane astrolabe (for measuring the positions of the stars, planets, and sun) and a graduated brass hydrometer for determining the specific gravity of a liquid. Hypatia came to symbolize learning and science, which the early Christians identified with paganism, making her the focal point of riots between Christians and non-Christians.

Hypatia of Alexandria
Few primary documentary sources regarding Hypatia of Alexandria have survived, and no extant writings can be uncontestably attributed to her, yet two feminist journals and two lunar landmarks are named after her . Writers such as Edward Gibbon , Voltaire and Carl Sagan have told the storya beautiful, learned young woman living at a time when few men and even fewer women had achieved an advanced education was brutally murdered, cut down in the prime of her life by a fanatical mob. The local bishop, Cyril of Alexandria who may have instigated themor at the very least turned a blind eye to their crimeswas later made a saint. Her death is seen as the end of classical learning and free inquiry and the beginning of a dogmatic and often brutal new world order.
Alexandria
, where Hypatia was born and seems to have lived her entire life, was long considered a place of learning. Peter James and Nicholas Thorpe, in their book Ancient Inventions refer to the city as "the scientific center of the ancient Greek world." Here

Hypatia The Lady Philosopher of Alexandria b. 355(?) AD - d. 415 AD Picture from The Mysterious Fayum Portraits: Faces from Ancient Egypt. Read a review of this spectacular book in the research bibliography. The Legend I first came across Hypatia's story in 1980 when I attended Judy Chicago's groundbreaking feminist art exhibit "The Dinner Party." Chicago and her team selected thirty-nine subjects for an elaborate dinner party, where each "guest" (including several goddesses) was honored for her contributions to womankind with a specially designed plate and table runner. In the accompanying book, Hypatia is described as "a Roman scholar and philosopher who lived in Alexandria...she stressed the importance of goddesses and the feminine aspects of culture." The article details the pagan philosopher's death at the hands of a Christian mob. I was hooked - caught up in the romanticism and inherent drama of Hypatia's life. What I didn't realize was that many of the "facts" in this story were wrong. I embarked on a journey to learn as much as I could about this fascinating woman and found a bewildering array of fact and fiction. The primary historical record is sketchy. No letters from or writing by Hypatia exist. Socrates Scholasticus' 5th Century eccleciastical history gives an account of her death. Most of what we know comes from a the surviving letters of one of her former students, Synesius of Cyrene and later Bishop of Ptolmais.

Sixteen hundred years ago, Hypatia became one of the world's leading scholars in mathematics and astronomy. Hypatia 's legendary knowledge, modesty, and public speaking ability flourished during the era of the Great Library of Alexandria Hypatia is credited with contributions to geometry and astrometry , and she is thought instrumental in the development of the sky-measuring astrolabe . "Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all," Hypatia is credited with saying. "To teach superstitions as truth is a most terrible thing." Yanvar'

From all we know about his child, Hypatia, he was very close to achievinghis goal. Hypatia was born, reared and educated in Alexandria.
http://www.students.bucknell.edu/sgilbert/fullbio.htm
Scott Gilbert Mysteries of Mathematics Professor Gorkin November 1, 2000 Hypatia Hypatia’s father, Theon, was a famous mathematician and philosopher in the ancient city of Alexandria and was considered one of the most educated men in the city. When Theon had a child, he made it his goal to make that child the most perfect human being he possibly could. From all we know about his child, Hypatia, he was very close to achieving his goal. Hypatia was born, reared and educated in Alexandria. There is some discrepancy about the exact date of Hypatia’s birth, but it has been narrowed down to between 355 and 370AD. Her father schooled her at an early age in mathematics and philosophy (Adair 1). However, her genius was greater than that of her father’s; therefore, she was not satisfied with his mathematical knowledge and decided to devote herself diligently to philosophy. Hypatia used to don her philosopher’s cloak and walk thought the middle of the town square openly interpreting Plato, Aristotle or any other works that the public wished to hear (Dzielska 76). Theon also set up a physical routine for Hypatia, ensuring her a healthy body and along side his teachings, a healthy mind.

My Hunt for Hypatia, Lady Philosopher of Alexandria
(b. 355 AD, d. 415 AD)
by Faith L. Justice
I first came across Hypatia's story in 1980 when I attended Judy Chicago's groundbreaking feminist art exhibit The Dinner Party . Chicago and her team selected thirty-nine subjects for an elaborate dinner party, where each "guest" was honored for contributions to womankind. In the accompanying book, Hypatia was described as a Roman scholar and philosopher who lived in Alexandria...a woman who stressed the importance of goddesses and the feminine aspects of culture. The article detailed the pagan philosopher's death in 415 AD at the hands of a Christian mob with the clear implication she was murdered because she was a woman as much as because she was a pagan. The Dinner Party came at a crucial point in my life. I had experienced discrimination at work and in the marketplace firsthand. I looked for role modelswomen who spoke out and lived their lives as they wanted, in spite of society's restrictions. The Dinner Party offered me a wealth of candidatesgoddesses, queens, literary lights. But something about Hypatia's story tugged at me. She was a scientist and mathematician in a time when woman had very few choices. She excelled and was recognized for her accomplishments. Her name came down to us through the ages, when so many women of talent remained nameless. That last fact added to the mystery, romance, and inherent drama of Hypatia's life and death. I wanted to know more.
