http://members.aol.com/Philosdog/Diogenes.html
Diogenes of Sinope [The Cynic] (c. 410 -c. 320 B.C.) Diogenes holding his lantern, and "searching for an honest man." The legend is that when Alexander the Great was named hegemon (boss) of the Hellenic League, many philosophers came to see him and congratulate him. But not the ascetic Diogenes, who lived in "a burial urn" (big clay tub). So Alexander went to see him, and asked if there were anything he could do for him. Diogenes, who had nothing, responded, "You could move away out of the sun and not cast a shadow on me." When Alexander's courtiers jeered at this, Alexander supposedly silenced them by saying "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes." It is curious that most modern philosophers, who dare not even challenge their academic administrationslet alone the rulers of societylove this story so much! None of them seems to have applied a skeptical eye to a tale that has all the hallmarks of a self-serving invention of the philosophical community.
Simple living was clearly the nub Of the teaching of one who could snub Alexander the Great With: "Move along, mate!

Diogenes of Sinope: fragments and anecdotes
11 February 2002 Scribe: Daniela Parlagreco These minutes were not spoken; for another version, go to the spoken minutes Professor Hutchinson drew a diagram that shows the different kinds of influences and links between these philosophers. Socrates influenced Xenophon (who had admiration towards Socrates and wrote much about him in his own works), Plato, Aristippus (focused on the Socratic idea of free living), and Antisthenes (who was a friend of Socrates). Epicurus was inspired by the material and ethical system of Democritus and was literarily influenced by Socrates, but places importance on the public and private pleasures of life. Zeno was influenced by Plato and Aristippus in a literary sense, and Xenophon, Plato, and Aristotle all had literary influence on the Stoics. This succession expresses two things about Stoicism: (1) that there is zeal to understand Socratic philosophy from all of its aspects, and (2) that it is an updated Socraticism with new techniques. The professor then said that Stoicism treated the wise man as one who can make no mistake and that we can get help in knowing what there was by expanding knowledge.

CYNICS IN HISTORY Diogenes of Sinope The story of one of the earliest bonafide Cynics is one that has been woven together from various threads of hearsay and unsubstantiated accounts, since there is no authenticated historical documentation about his life. The most commonly repeated story about Diogenes is that he walked the streets of ancient Greece waving a lantern in search of an 'honest man.' Although there's no proof he did this, it sounds like something he might do, as the quotes that are attributed to him are things he would have been likely to say.
(Diogenes with his cynical followers) We know that he was born in Sinope, an Ionian colony on the Black Sea. His father was in charge of the mint there, and possibly because of some malfeasance on the part of father or son, namely alloying the coins with base metals, they were driven from the city. Diogenes sought out and studied at the feet of the first self-proclaimed Cynic, Antisthenes. Antisthenes was a friend of Socrates, but broke ranks with 'refined philosophy' to form not his own philosophy, but an "erratic succession of individuals" who emphasized moral self-mastery, and rejected government, property, marriage and religion.

To Tibble the Truth
Episode #704
"To Tibble the Truth" / "Waiting to Go" Synopsis by: Dave
Comments by: Dave and TXC Athens, in Ancient Greece. Diogenes of Sinope introduces himself. He has a dog with him, and a lamp and a staff. He announces he's looking for "an honest man". Diogenes of Sinope was one of the Cynic philosphers, which is why he has a dog with him. That's a particularly bad explanation, so go look it up yourself. I'm sure all the children watching this promptly did so after watching Arthur. :) Arthur's ancient Greek counterpart hurries by. Diogenes puts his hand on Arthur's shoulder as he goes past, and asks if Arthur is an honest man. Arthur thinks he is. D.W. rushes in and says no he's not... D.W.: He took my snowball and he's been lying about it for years... Here's hoping that the snowball incident will be resolved once and for all later this season. Arthur and D.W., or rather Arthur and Delta-Omega, or, which is D.W. in the Greek alphabet, start bickering. But DW knows where he can find what he's looking for, and whispers in his ear. So Diogenes, and his poor old dog set off.

There's so many curious stories about money. How about the story with the philosopher Diogenes and from the coin counterfeiters in the ancient city Dyme
And a curious thing is, that there's no silver in our so called silver coins. Have you ever asked yourself how much money costs? How much would Jesus have in his savings book if his parents opened an account for him in the bank of Bethlehem? In our glossary, Dave Barry gives (un)suitable answers to finance questions. Diogenes Diogenes of Sinope (ca. 412-323 BC) is today's personification of simple living. He housed in a can and owned only a cup to drink from. Even this he threw away when he saw a boy use his hand to scoop water with. Of all people, this modest and simple man was supposed to be a counterfeiter, if we are to believe his namesake Diogenes Laertios, who lived 100 years later. In his work vitae philosophorum (The Resume of Philosophers) he reports that the father of Diogenes of Sinope was a moneychanger and lender. He would have had his son help him make

http://www.calendario.cnt.br/COMPANHEIROS.htm
A ambição e o egoísmo destruiram-lhe todas as capacidades.
