Francis Herbert Bradley
F.H. Bradley (1846-1924) was the most famous, original and philosophically influential of the British Idealists. These philosophers came to prominence in the closing decades of the nineteenth century, but their effect on British philosophy and society at large and, through the positions of power attained by some of their pupils in the institutions of the British Empire, on much of the world persisted well into the first half of the twentieth. They stood out amongst their peers in consciously rejecting the tradition of their earlier compatriots, such as Hume and Mill, and responding rather to the work of Kant and Hegel. It is for his metaphysics that Bradley has become best known. He argued that our everyday conceptions of the world (as well as those more refined ones common among his philosophical predecessors) contain hidden contradictions which appear, fatally, when we try to think out their consequences. In particular, Bradley rejected on these grounds the view that reality can be understood as consisting of many objects existing independently of each other (pluralism) and of our experience of them (realism). Consistently, his own view combined monism the claim that reality is one, that there are no real separate things with absolute idealism the claim that reality consists solely of idea or experience. This vision of the world had a profound effect on the verse of T.S. Eliot, who studied philosophy at Harvard and wrote a Ph.D. thesis on Bradley.

Francis Herbert Bradley’s Appearance and Reality Francis Herbert Bradley’s Appearance and Reality: A Metaphysical Essay (1893) summarizes many important aspects of his philosophy. Bradley says that appearance is inseparable from reality, and explains what this means for our understanding of the universe. The treatise is divided into two books. Book I is titled “Appearance.” Book II is titled “Reality.” Book I has twelve chapters, entitled: I. "Primary and Secondary Qualities;" II. "Substantive and Adjective;" III. "Relation and Quality;" IV. "Space and Time;" V. "Motion and Change and Its Perception;" VI. "Causation;" VII. "Activity;" VIII. "Things;" IX. "The Meanings of Self;" X. "The Reality of Self;" XI. "Phenomenalism;" XII. "Things in Themselves." Book II has fifteen chapters, entitled: XIII. "The General Nature of Reality;" XIV. "The General Nature of Reality ( cont .);" XV. "Thought and Reality;" XVI. "Error;" XVII. "Evil;" XVIII. "Temporal and Spatial Appearance;" XIX. "The This and The Mine;" XX. "Recapitulation;" XXI. "Solipsism;" XXII. "Nature;" XIII. "Body and Soul;" XXIV. "Degrees of Truth and Reality;" XXV. "Goodness;" XXVI. "The Absolute and Its Appearances;" XXVII. "Ultimate Doubts." According to Bradley, the goal of metaphysics is to understand reality, and to find a way of thinking about reality that is not self-contradictory. Reality is consistent, and is compatible with itself. Whatever is inconsistent with itself is unreal.

Bradley, Francis Herbert (1846 - 1924) brain in a vat Braithwaite, Richard Bevan (1900 - 1990) Brand, Myles, Prof (M.B.) About The Oxford Companion to Philosophy from Oxford University Press Bradley, Francis Herbert British philosopher, fellow of Merton College, Oxford. Bradley is indisputably the greatest British philosopher between J. S. Mill and Bertrand Russell. His philosophy is a late example of the movement of British philosophers away from the tradition of British empiricism towards German idealism , in particular Hegel. However, despite himself, he was much nearer to British Empiricism than other British idealists of the period such as T. H. Green and Bernard Bosanquet. Ethical Studies (1876) was his most Hegelian work. Contending that a moral outlook must be justified by the form of 'self-realization' it offers, Bradley examines a series of moral systems which in turn rectify each other's contradictions.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Bradley, Francis Herbert F rancis Herbert Bradley is said to be the greatest logician in British philosophy; he demolished the assumptions of Hegelian utilitarian, and hedonistic ethics, an achievement that compelled materialism and empiricism to abolish a number of their concepts. His attacks against empiricism, emphasizing experience exclusively, led to his expounding a new metaphysical system of absolute idealism. It was characterized by acceptance of the contradiction between concept and reality. But Bradley, a brilliant thinker, found that his own logic turned against him, forcing him in his later years to abandon some of his personal theories. But with the growth of enriching wisdom, he finally crowned his estimable career by acknowledging the depth of Plato's genius and adopting a platonic mysticism. His work Appearance and Reality (1893) is one of the epochal books of modern philosophy. A.G.H. Sources:
