Roger Bacon ca. 1214 - ca. 1292
Texts: Roger Bacon Used Books: Roger Bacon Know of a Resource? Rodger Bacon: History of Alchemy Edmund Brehm article explores the relationship of 13th century natural philosopher Bacon to alchemy and the Hermetic sciences. Excerpt: ALCHEMY, throughout its history, has shown a dual nature. On the one hand, it has involved the use of chemical substances and so is claimed by the history of science as the precursor of modern chemistry. Yet at the same time, alchemy has, throughout its history, also been associated with the esoteric, spiritual beliefs of Hermeticism and thus is a proper subject for the historian of religious thought...
Tract on the Tincture and Oil of Antimony
Roger Bacon wrote this tract in 1731 on the preparation of Stibium, which supposedly heals human illness and weakness. On Experimental Science From the Medieval Sourcebook Excerpt: Having laid down the main points of the wisdom of the Latins as regards language, mathematics and optics, I wish now to review the principles of wisdom from the point of view of experimental science, because without experiment it is impossible to know anything thoroughly.

Bacon, Roger
English philosopher and scientist.
He was interested in alchemy, the biological and physical sciences, and magic. Many discoveries have been credited to him, including the magnifying lens.
He foresaw the extensive use of gunpowder and mechanical cars, boats, and planes.
In 1266, at the invitation of his friend Pope Clement IV, he began his Opus majus/Great Work, a compendium of all branches of knowledge.
In 1268 he sent this with his Opus minus/Lesser Work and other writings to the pope.
In 1277 Bacon was condemned and imprisoned by the Christian church for 'certain novelties' (heresy) and not released until 1292.
Bacon wrote in Latin and his works include On Mirrors, Metaphysical, and On the Multiplication of Species.
He followed the maxim 'Cease to be ruled by dogmas and authorities; look at the world!' Bacon was born in Somerset and educated at Oxford and Paris.
He became a Franciscan monk and lectured in Paris about 1241-47, then at Oxford University.

Bacon, Roger Opus majus (tr. 1928), the Opus minor, and the Opus tertium. He was deeply interested in alchemy, an interest that may account for his being credited by his contemporaries with great learning in magical practices. He was long credited with the invention of gunpowder (because of a formula for gunpowder that appeared in a work attributed to him). A manuscript in cipher, discovered in the 20th cent. and attributed to him, would make Bacon the first man to have observed spiral nebulae through a telescope and to have examined cells through a microscope; but considerable doubt has been cast on the original date and the authenticity of the manuscript. Earlier editions of his major works were supplemented by an edition of his hitherto unedited works in various fascicles by Robert Steele and others (1909-35). See A. G. Little, ed., Roger Bacon Essays (1914, repr. 1972); biography by F. Winthrop Woodruff (1938); studies by Theodore Crowley (1950) and Stewart C. Easton (1952, repr. 1971).

The Opus Minus is "an abridgement of the larger work...with a special treatment of some essential subjects omitted either by design or by pressure of circumstances. Still desirous of conveying his thought in such a way as to win the ear of his powerful patron [Pope Clement IV], Bacon forthwith began a new treatment of the whole, and in the seventy-five chapters printed under the title of the Opus Tertium we have at least a portion of his new treatment. The Opus Tertium in its printed form contains an expanded summary of the main portions of the Opus Majus..." (DNB). This item is listed on Bibliopoly by
