Augustine of Hippo (354-430) envisioned a form of religious community life in which the members would "live in harmony, being united in mind and heart intent upon God." He wrote a Rule outlining the basic principles of this sort of life. Today Augustinians and many other religious orders and congregations still use this Rule as their guide. A Bishop in Hippo (near modern-day Annaba, Algeria), Augustine was an influential leader in the African Church. As Christians were growing in their knowledge of God and Christ, Augustine helped to shape Christian theological teachings, particularly those about the role of Divine Grace and the nature of the Holy Trinity. In the process, he combatted many theological errors. The son of Monica, a holy Christian, and Patricius, a pagan, Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (now known as Souk Ahras, Algeria). He was educated in the best secular schools of his day. As a young man, he led a distinctly non-Christian and immoral life. He lived with a young woman without the benefit of marriage. Together they had a son, Adeodatus. The young Augustine was continually searching with a restless heart for meaning in life. Each time that he would be attracted to a particular philosophy or group, he would become disillusioned the more familiar he became with its thought.

March 17 ~  Believe What You Do Not See Praying the Psalms Faith is to b e l i e v e what you do not yet see; the r e w a r d for this f a i t h is to see what you b e l i e v e ~ St. Augustine A man of faith and wisdom , St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was born Aurelius Augustinus in the North African town of Tagaste, which is modern-day Algeria. He is considered one of the Catholic Church's most influential writers and philosophers God judged it better to bring good out of evil than to suffer no evil to exist," said Augustine, who coined the term "original sin." As a young man, the brilliant Augustine searched for life's meaning by wildly exploring the ways of the flesh. His deeply religious mother, St. Monica, prayed fervently for his conversion. By the time he was 32, Augustine was dissatisfied with his self-indulgence and turned to God. "If you don't believe it, you won't understand it," he said and wrote of his conversion: "all the darkness of doubt vanished away." Augustine taught, prayed, and wrote passionately . From his meditations, he wrote The City of God about the fall of the Roman Empire and the Church as a spiritual kingdom.

and as a correction. Our holy Scriptures themselves do not promise us
peace, security, and rest. On the contrary, the Gospel make no secret of

by mankind that was not endured by our fathers before us? What sufferings
of ours even bear comparison with what we know of their sufferings? And yet
you hear people complaining about this present day and age because things
were so much better in former times. I wonder what would happen if they
could be taken back to the days of their ancestors-would we not still hear them complaining? You may think past ages were good, but it is only because

fail to prepare the sheep for the temptations that threaten, but even
promise them worldly happiness? God himself made no such promise to the

St. Augustine of Hippo
The City of God BOOK I
AUGUSTINE CENSURES THE PAGANS, WHO ATTRIBUTED THE CALAMITIES OF THE WORLD, AND ESPECIALLY THE RECENT SACK OF ROME BY THE GOTHS, TO THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION, AND ITS PROHIBITION OF THE WORSHIP OF THE GODS. HE SPEAKS OF THE BLESSINGS AND ILLS OF LIFE, WHICH THEN, AS ALWAYS, HAPPENED TO GOOD AND BAD MEN ALIKE. FINALLY, HE REBUKES THE SHAMELESSNESS OF THOSE WHO CAST UP TO THE CHRISTIANS THAT THEIR WOMEN HAD BEEN VIOLATED BY THE SOLDIERS. BOOK II
IN THIS BOOK AUGUSTINE REVIEWS THOSE CALAMITIES WHICH THE ROMANS SUFFERED BEFORE THE TIME OF CHRIST, AND WHILE THE WORSHIP OF THE FALSE GODS WAS UNIVERSALLY PRACTISED; AND DEMONSTRATES THAT, FAR FROM BEING PRESERVED FROM MISFORTUNE BY THE GODS, THE ROMANS HAVE BEEN BY THEM OVERWHELMED WITH THE ONLY, OR AT LEAST THE GREATEST, OF ALL CALAMITIES THE CORRUPTION OF MANNERS, AND THE VICES OF THE SOUL. BOOK III
AS IN THE FOREGOING BOOK AUGUSTINE HAS PROVED REGARDING MORAL AND SPIRITUAL CALAMITIES, SO IN THIS BOOK HE PROVES REGARDING EXTERNAL AND BODILY DISASTERS, THAT SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE CITY THE ROMANS HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY SUBJECT TO THEM; AND THAT EVEN WHEN THE FALSE GODS WERE WORSHIPPED WITHOUT A RIVAL, BEFORE THE ADVENT OF CHRIST, THEY AFFORDED NO RELIEF FROM SUCH CALAMITIES. BOOK IV
IN THIS BOOK IT IS PROVED THAT THE EXTENT AND LONG DURATION OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE IS TO BE ASCRIBED, NOT TO JOVE OR THE GODS OF THE HEATHEN, TO WHOM INDIVIDUALLY SCARCE EVEN SINGLE THINGS AND THE VERY BASEST FUNCTIONS WERE BELIEVED TO BE ENTRUSTED, BUT TO THE ONE TRUE GOD, THE AUTHOR OF FELICITY, BY WHOSE POWER AND JUDGMENT EARTHLY KINGDOMS ARE FOUNDED AND MAINTAINED.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430)
North African theologian; Father and Doctor of the Church, born at Tagaste. His mother was a Christian but, after studying at Carthage, he became a Manichaean. He taught rhetoric in Rome and in Milan, where he was attracted to Neoplatonism. However, under the influence of St Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, he was finally converted to Christianity in 386. On his return to Africa, he lived as a monk until he was ordained at Hippo in 391. He became Bishop of Hippo in 396 and died there during a Vandal siege. His works are the most important and influential of those written by the early Fathers, especially The City of God , a defence of Christianity in 22 books, and his spiritual autobiography, The Confessions . His other writings include commentaries on the scriptures, sermons, letters, and treatises against the heresies Manichaeism, Donatism, and Pelagianism. He was most actively involved in the Pelagian controversy, in which he upheld the doctrines of original sin and divine grace. Feast day: 28 Aug.

Saint Augustine of Hippo
General Information Saint Augustine, b. Nov. 13, 354, d. Aug. 28, 430, was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and, while serving (396-430) as bishop of Hippo Regius, the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture and, more than any other person, shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian Theology. Among his many writings considered classics, the two most celebrated are his semiautobiographical Confessions, which contains elements of Mysticism, and City of God, a Christian vision of history.
Early Life and Conversion
Augustine was born at Thagaste (modern Souk-Ahras, Algeria), a small town in the Roman province of Numidia. He received a classical education that both schooled him in Latin literature and enabled him to escape from his provincial upbringing. Trained at Carthage in rhetoric (public oratory), which was a requisite for a legal or political career in the Roman empire, he became a teacher of rhetoric in Carthage, in Rome, and finally in Milan, a seat of imperial government at the time. At Milan, in 386, Augustine underwent religious conversion. He retired from his public position, received baptism from Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, and soon returned to North Africa. In 391, he was ordained to the priesthood in Hippo Regius (modern Bone, Algeria); five years later he became bishop.

Synopsis
Augustine is acknowledged as having been one of the most important influences on the development of the western Christianity.[ ] The theological system he developed dominated the mediaeval church until the thirteenth century and its influence is still felt today.[ ] A large number of his writings have survived and we know a great deal about his life from his Confessions and Revisions; from a contemporary biography,[ ] and from his letters, (over 200 of which have survived).[ ] His most famous work, Confessions (written about 397), was not intended simply as an autobiography as such. Rather, it is a long prayer of penitence and thanksgiving for the grace of God evidenced during the first 33 years of his life.[ ] Numerous modern biographies have been written[ ] and so I will sketch only a brief outline of his life.
