At present, the Project has 14 active participants, who contribute their own translations, proof-read each other's work, and discuss, via email, the many issues which arise, be they doctrinal or grammatical. The co-ordinator of the Project is Dr. Stephen Loughlin, an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at DeSales University, Center Valley, Pennsylvannia, USA. Among our present efforts is Aquinas's Commentary on the Psalms. To date, a third of this commentary has been translated. If you would like to join us in this effort, please contact either Mr. Hugh McDonald or Dr. Stephen Loughlin . Your involvement can range from offering translations of psalm commentaries, to corrections of, or comments upon, our work. Any input, even suggestions concerning a better turn of phrase, would be appreciated and welcome. Note: Commentary on the Psalms Update - April 2, 2002

Thomas the Apostle challenged the story that the Lord was risen, and his unbelief brought froth a glowing testimony of the reality of the Resurrection. Twelve centuries later, his namesake, Thomas of Aquino, questioned; without doubting; the great truths of faith, and demonstrated for all time the relationship of faith and reason. As the first Thomas found by experiment: "Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hands into His side"; that the Man who stood in the midst of them was none other than Jesus Christ, so Thomas, the Angelic Doctor, proved for all time that there is no quarrel between reason and revelation. Thomas, son of the count of Aquino, (b. 1225-d. 1274) was first trained at the Benedictine abbey of Montecassino , and here, even in childhood, his great mind was wrestling with theological questions, "Master, tell mewhat is God?" In order to better to train the boy's mind, his father sent him at an early age to the University of Naples. There he studied under Peter of Ireland and, undisturbed by the noise and wickedness of the great university city, proceeded rapidly on his quest for God. Meeting the Dominicans, he was strongly attracted by their apostolic life and petitioned to be received as one of them. While recognizing the gifts of the young student, the friars refused him admittance to the Order until he was eighteen. Acting deliberately, without a backward glance at the power and wealth he was leaving, Thomas, at eighteen, joyfully put on the habit of the new Order.

St. Thomas Aquinas
Biography
Saint Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican theologian and philosopher, was born Thomas d'Aquino, the son of a baron, in his family's castle at Roccasecca, in the vicinity of Naples in southern Italy, in 1224 or 1225. At about the age of five, Thomas was placed by his parents in the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino. His uncle had been abbot of the monastery, and his family had similar ambitions for Thomas. When Monte Cassino became the scene of a battle between papal and imperial troops, however, Thomas withdrew and enrolled at the University of Naples, one of few where a full range Aristotelian doctrine was studied, in November of 1239, where he stayed until April of 1244. There he came into contact with members of the Dominican order and, against the opposition of his family, became a Dominican friar in late April of 1244. Shortly after, in May of 1244, his family intervened forcibly, having him abducted and detained thereafter at Roccasecca. His mother tried to persuade Thomas for more than a year to give up his membership in the Dominican order. Failing to persuade him, Thomas was allowed to return to his order in July or August of 1245. He then went north to study for his novitiate till 1248, after which he came under the guidance of Albert the Great at Cologne until the Fall of 1252, during which time (1250/51) he was ordained a priest. From the Fall of 1252 to the Spring of 1259, Thomas taught at the Dominican house of studies in Paris. It was during this time that he lectured on the Sentences of Peter Lombard. Between March 3 and June 17 of 1256, he was incepted as a master of theology, and was regent master in theology at Paris until 1259, during which time that he began his

St. Thomas Aquinas' Five Ways
Background: St. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274) was a Dominican priest, theologian, and philosopher. Called the Doctor Angelicus (the Angelic Doctor,) Aquinas is considered one the greatest Christian philosophers to have ever lived. Two of his most famous works, the Summa Theologiae and the Summa Contra Gentiles , are the finest examples of his work on Christian philosophy. "The truth of the Christian faith...surpasses the capacity of reason, nevertheless that truth that the human reason is naturally endowed to know can not be opposed to the truth of the Christian faith."
First Way: The Argument From Motion
St. Thomas Aquinas, studying the works of the Greek philsopher Aristotle, concluded from common observation that an object that is in motion (e.g. the planets, a rolling stone) is put in motion by some other object or force. From this, Aquinas believes that ultimately there must have been an UNMOVED MOVER (GOD) who first put things in motion. Follow the agrument this way: 1) Nothing can move itself.

    Aquinas, St. Thomas (ca. 1225-1274)

Italian theologian whose importance to science lies in the fact that he was a a rationalist. He is exemplar of medieval reason. Aquinas was raised by monks, and joined the Dominican order. He taught at Paris and wrote Summa Theologica. Aquinas accepted Aristotle's teachings, and found them perfectly compatible with theology. He believed that men were made in God's image in that they had the power of reason. With the statement "Nihil est in intellectu, nisi prius fuerit in sensu" (nothing is in the mind that has not previously been perceived by the senses), he contradicted Plato , believing the world is at it seems.
