Synopsis
Credo ut intelligam, non quaero intelligere ut credam, is the principle on which he proceeds; and after him it has become the principle of all orthodox theology. As a metaphysician he was a Realist; and one of his earliest works, De Fide Trinitatis Proslogium , written before 1078, and setting forth the ontological proof of the existence of God, and Cur Deus Homo , finished at Capua in 1098, and developing those views of atonement and satisfaction which still are held by orthodox divines. his Meditationes and Orationes are of an edifying and contemplative character rather than dialectical, but are often very impressive. St. Anselm of Canterbury
Monastic
Philosopher
Saint x Italy France Britain: England
Generally considered one of the most significant philosophers of the Middle Ages and the founder of Scholasticism, Anselm focused on ontological proofs for the existence of God from reason alone. When Anselm was Abbot of Bec, Normandy, the monastery became a center of learning, and theological ideas were explored and questioned there. As Archbishop of Canterbury, England, he came into conflict with King William II and King Henry I Important Dates Consecrated as Archbishop: Dec. 4

St. Anselm (1033-1109) As archbishop of Canterbury, Anselm was not at his greatest, but he did one thing of lasting value: he put an end to the denigration of the 'rustic' English saints by the new Norman churchmen. Lanfranc had even struck St. Dunstan out of the calendar; Anselm put him and many others back. He encouraged devotion to the traditional English saints, and he undoubtedly helped to promote that affection for all things English which is found even among churchmen of Norman ancestry after his day. He thus helped to heal that emotional schism which the Norman Conquest had opened in English life. from The Saints: A Concise Biographical Dictionary, ed. John Coulson

COMPARISONS BETWEEN ST. ANSELM OF CANTERBURY AND ST. JULIAN OF NORWICH
Methodological Agreement Both see the religious quest as involving religious experience and rational reflection. Points of Theological Agreement (i) God is immeasurably worthy of honor and reverence and love. (ii) God's purpose in making humans is overwhelmingly generousthat we should live in mutually loving intimacy forever. (iii) Humans now suffer under an exile which includes: (a) blindness to the de fact o presence and mercy of God; (b) confusing motivational disorders; (c) physical pain and suffering; (d) death. (iv) The central revelation of God's mercy is found in the Incarnation and the passion of Christ. (v) That through the passion of Christ the hold of evil over the souls of the elect is decisively broken. (vi) That the souls of the elect will be restored to loving intimacy with God after death. Common Imagery (i) God is both Father and Mother: a father who disciplines, a merciful nurturing mother. (ii) Christ is the bridegroom/lover of the soul. (iii) God is king of the universe.

St. Anselm,
Archbishop of Canterbury

Anselm was born in Aosta (Piedmont) around 1033. He entered the Monastery of Bec which, under Lanfranc , had become a centre of learning. Anselm succeeded Lanfranc as Abbot and, on a visit to England in 1093, he was compelled by William Rufus to accept the Archbishopric of Canterbury. William, however, continually thwarted and harassed him, by plundering and oppressing the Church, so that Anselm was driven to lay his difficulties before the Pope. The appeal met with little success but, upon the death of William, he was recalled by King Henry I and the voice of all the people. Fresh difficulties arose however, when Henry expressed his desire that Anselm should receive the investiture from his own hands. This, Anselm declined unless it were sanctioned by the Pope. He was inflexible in his determination to protect the rights and liberties of the Church and, finally, the conflict was settled by a compromise, two years before his death which took place on 21st April 1109. His honesty of purpose, his undaunted courage, his saintly character and, above all, his great learning, entitle him to be regarded as one of the chief glories of the English Church. He was the author of many theological and philosophical works of which the most famous was Cur Deus Homo. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VI in 1494.

Your Lois Lane of St. Anselm of Canterbury is taking a break for the summer months. I’m off to Wales with Dave for a Celtic pilgrimage, led by an Episcopalian nun who leads three Great Britain Celtic pilgrimages a year. I’ll be back with these columns in September. Have a wonderful, blessed summer. Cammie Bella News from St. Anselm The most important summer news from St. Anselm is that Fr. Jon will be on sabbatical from June 18 to Sept. 17. This is his first sabbatical in 19 years in higher education ministry in Corvallis. Sabbaticals are supposed to give not only time for reflection and refreshment, but also time to accomplish what can’t get done in the hurly-burly of regularly scheduled work. So what are Fr. Jon’s goals for this time? First, visiting. There is a network of former Canterbury House and St. Anselm people spread over the Pacific Northwest. A number of these are active supporters of St. Anselm. To talk face to face with as many of these people as possible about St. Anselm’s ministry and its future will be time well spent. Second, to revise and complete his commentary on the Book of Common Prayer. Bibliographies haven’t been updated since 1991. Some sections of the Prayer Book – Catechism, Ministration at the Time of Death – haven’t been written about. Fr. Jon uses this book as the liturgics text at the Center for the Diaconate – so it’s important that it be up to date and comprehensive.
