This is by no means intended to be an exhaustive list, but rather to give the philosophy student a starting point. Our best advice is that if you find a philosopher whom you like, find more books by that author.

Abelard and Heloise
No. 13: Saturday, October 14, 1995
This quarter I've been teaching an undergraduate seminar on Ideas of Love , a topic not unrelated to that of this column. In the context of our readings, I thought I'd say a few words about the Middle Ages' most celebrated romantic couple. Readers familiar with French literature will remember Villon's lines: [Where is the very good/wise Heloise For whom was castrated and then a monk Pierre Abelard at Saint-Denis For his love he paid that penalty.] Abelard (1079-1142), the perfector of nominalism , the basis of modern empiricism, was arguably the first modern thinker. He was recognized as the most brilliant man of his time; students flocked to his lectures. Heloise (1101-1164), his junior by 22 years, was an unusually well-educated young woman, the pride of her uncle canon Fulbert . Abelard, attracted by her reputation, made use of his own to persuade Fulbert to let him give her lessons, and then to persuade his pupil to turn these lessons into a more agreeable form of activity ( We exchanged more kisses than learned propositions; my hands returned more often to her bosom than to our books.

Historique.net

Abelard , inaczej Pierre Abailard lub Piotr Abelard (pol.), (1079-1142), teolog i filozof , błyskotliwy dysputant i wykładowca, zwolennik racjonalnego poznania w teologii i znany z niebanalnego podejścia do dialektyki . Syn rycerza, zrezygnował z praw dziedzicznych, by studiować filozofię.

Course Description The class meets once a week. This is a research seminar, so its ultimate goal is your production of a research paper. Since we are focusing on a particular theme as well as an historical period with which many of you may not be very familiar, however, we will also discuss common readings. The weekly reading assignments are therefore developed for the purpose of introducing you to both important historical sources and issues of gender and power. Each week we will discuss that week's reading with specific attention to the course theme. Course participation, in addition to your research paper, is a significance component of your final grade. You will also be required to develop at least a preliminary project proposal by the beginning of the second week of the term, in consultation with the professor. You will present your proposal and your working bibliography to the class during the week whose reading assignment is most germane to your topic. The supplemental readings listed for each week will help you to develop your bibliography but they do not in any way comprise a complete bibliography! At the end of the term, we will spend the final class meeting and our allotted final examination time hearing presentations of drafts of your papers. You will be expected to hand in a draft of your paper, with appropriate copies depending on course enrollment, no later than Friday, May 28 for those of you presenting on June 1, and Friday, June 4 for those of you presenting during finals week.

    A Note to Visitors
I will respond to questions and comments as time permits, but if you want to take issue with any position expressed here, you first have to answer this question: What evidence would it take to prove your beliefs wrong? I simply will not reply to challenges that do not address this question. Refutability is one of the classic determinants of whether a theory can be called scientific. Moreover, I have found it to be a great general-purpose cut-through-the-crap question to determine whether somebody is interested in serious intellectual inquiry or just playing mind games. Note, by the way, that I am assuming the burden of proof here - all you have to do is commit to a criterion for testing. It's easy to criticize science for being "closed-minded". Are you open-minded enough to consider whether your ideas might be wrong?
