"Too long a sacrifice can make a stone of the heart."
William Butler Yeats William Butler Yeats was a leader in the Irish literary renaissance who is best known for his poetry and dramaticism. Born in Dublin, Ireland, much of Yeats' work is marked by his use of Irish legend and culture: many claim that he was the outstanding English language poet of the 20th Century. William was born on June 13th, 1865. His father was an Irish painter, John Butler Yeats. His mother, Susan Pollexfan Yeats, was the daughter of a Sligo merchant and she was fascinated with faeries and astrology. During his youth, Yeats vacationed in Sligo, the culture of which influenced much of his later work. Soon afterwards, when his family moved to London he became involved in the occult and learned Hindu philosophy. Schooled in Dublin and later in London, Yeats studied painting. Although trained as a painter like his father, William soon learned that he much preferred poetry. He began to write poetry actively soon after attending the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in 1884, but was much more concerned with the occult at that time. He joined the

William Butler Yeats
Born: June 13, 1865 // Died: January 18, 1939
W. B. Yeats, b. Dublin, June 13, 1865, d. Jan. 28, 1939, was perhaps the greatest English-language poet of the 20th century. The major defining elements of Yeats's poetic career were visible by his 24th year. He had formed a profound attachment to the county of Sligo, where he stayed for long periods while living in London (1867-83); his interest in the occult led him to found (1885) the Dublin Hermetic Society and to join (1887) the London Lodge of Theosophists; his 1885 meeting with the nationalist John O'Leary prompted his discovery of Ireland as a literary subject and his commitment to the cause of Irish national identity; in 1889 he fell in love with Maud Gonne and published The Wanderings of Oisin. Yeats's lifework was an attempt to "hammer into unity" these evolving areas of his experience.
Between 1889 and 1902, Yeats sustained these original commitments. Irish myth and landscapes fill the poems of The Rose (1893). His edition of Blake (1893; with Edwin Ellis) influenced his own thought. He enshrined his unrequited love for Maud Gonne in the stylized, erotic, symbolic verses of The Wind among the Reeds (1899). A meeting (1896) with Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory and visits to Coole Park provided a model of social grace and generosity that was practically useful and, in his poetry, of symbolic importance. Head of the Order of the Golden Dawn (London, 1900), he became (1902) President of the Irish National Theatre Society (later the Abbey Theatre) for which he had written, among other plays, the patriotic Cathleen in Houlihan (1902). Motivating such activities was Yeats's desire to raise national consciousness by cultural means and to extend his own awareness of himself as a poet, as a shaper not only of verses but of the world.

William Butler Yeats
Yeats was an Irish poet and playwright, educated in London, and at the high school and Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin. He settled in London, moving in literary, aesthetic, theosophical and spiritualistic circles. He established himself as an imaginative writer with The Celtic Twilight in 1893 and Poems in 1895, followed by the more sophistacated and stylized The Secret Rose in 1897. Yeats was stimulated by his friendship with John O'Leary and Maud Gonne, who was to be the subject of his love poetry. By 1899 Yeats produced The Countess Cathleen in Dublin and subsequently established the Abbey Theatre as a national institution. Yeats won the Nobel prize for literature in 1923 and with G.B. Shaw and G.W. Russell, founded the Irish Academy of Letters in 1932. The Secret Rose.

William Butler Yeats, Mythologies (Touchstone, 1998) Mythologies is a collection of stories by Yeats, first published as three separate collections, The Celtic Twilight The Secret Rose and Stories of Red Hanrahan William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) is best known as one of Ireland's greatest poets and dramatists, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. What may be unknown to many people is his interest in the supernatural, and in particular the myths, legends and stories of his home country. Yeats loved to travel the countryside, collecting stories from the people. At the beginning of each of the books, Yeats provides a little background as to where the tales originated. Details such as geography, as well as the names of those who told the stories, are included. He credits Lady Gregory, a central figure in the Irish literary revival and well-known compiler of Irish mythologies and legends, with assisting in the collation of the stories. I was very excited about being able to review Mythologies , but that excitement leeched away as I started reading. I found the language difficult. Words and sentences just did not flow from one another. The impression I was left with is that

William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. By the age of 24 his poetry was well defined and his reputation was growing. That year, 1899, Yeats fell in love with Maud Gonne. This same year he published "The Wanderings of Oisin". He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Yeats was a founder of the Abbey Theater, Ireland's National Theatre. He was a revolutionary patriot, a celtic traditionalist and a senator in the Upper House of the Irish Dail. He formed a profound attachment to County Sligo and wrote "The Lake Isle of Inishfree" that is so beloved of Irish school children. His poetry stands somewhere between the romanticism of Shelley and the realism of his successor, Heaney. Regarded as the greatest poet of the twentieth century, Yeats, while a playwright, storyteller, and visionary, was first and always a poet.
Some works by Yeats:
  • The Wild Swans At Coole
  • Responsibilities
  • The Wanderings of Oisin
  • Baile and Aillinn
  • In The Seven Woods

The Lake Isle of Innisfree (1893).

71. Biography Of William Butler Yeats

http://www.golden-dawn.org/bioyeats.html
William Butler Yeats June 13, 1865 - January 28th, 1939
William Butler Yeats is one of the many famous names to come from the original Golden Dawn. His poetry and writings were a display of his passion for mysticism and the Occult Sciences. These were largely expressed in various publications (e.g. Your Pathway), earning him the Nobel Prize in 1924 for literature. But more important was his desire and striving for knowledge of that which is beyond what we know and that of the unknown.
William Butler Yeats was third-generation Irish, born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. From day one he was up against a wall regarding his religious beliefs, for his grandfather was a deeply Orthodox Rector in the Church of England, while his father was a complete religious skeptic. With this conflict already in place, young William walked the very fine line of between faith and disbelief.
Being faced with this dilema, Yeats was destined to find the balance by whatever means necessary. This first step occurred after reading numerous text on the subjects of Occultism, the Tibetan Mysteries, Buddhism, and other beliefs. All of these subjects ignited his desire to learn and to know. Aside from his readings, what further expanded his desire was his discovery of a society purporting to be Ancient and non-European. This new movement simply called The Theosophical Society, claimed to have the ability to offer a "synthesis" of religion, science, and philosophy. For at that particular time in human development, none of these three disciplines were ready to integrate with the other, but this is what fascinated Yeats. This is what he longed for.

William Butler Yeats
Irish poet, dramatist and prose writer, one of the greatest English-language poets of the 20th century. Yeats received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Between the Celtic dreams of THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (1889) and the intellectual, often obscure poetry of the 1930s, Yeats produced a tremendous amount of works. In his early career Yeats studied William Blake's poems, Emanuel Swedenborg's writings and other visionaries, but later he began to confront reality with a new directness - and disillusionment. Central theme in Yeats's poems is Ireland, its history, folklore and contemporary public life.
William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin. His father was a lawyer turned to an Irish Pre-Raphaelite painter. In 1867 the family followed him to London and settled in Bedford Park. In 1881 they returned to Dublin, where Yeats studied the Metropolitan School of Art. He met there the poet, dramatist and painter George Russell (1867-1935), who was interested in mysticism.

William Butler Yeats
William Butler Yeats -
An Irish airman foresees his death
I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan's poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier them before. Nor law, nor duty bade me fight, Nor public men, nor cheering crowds, A lonely impulse of delight Drove to this tumult in the clouds; I balanced all, brought all to mind, The years to come seemed waste of breath, A waste of breath the years behind In balance with this life, this death.

Go Back Main Page William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 1865. He was the son of the painter John Butler Yeats. He spent most of his childhood in County Sligo, London, and Ireland. Because of his love for Ireland, most of his poems dominate its country and culture. As a boy, he attended Godolphin School, in London. At the age of 15, Yeats returned to Dublin and attended the Erasmus Smith School. At first he was studying painting, but somehow he discovered poetry. Some of his first published works was Mosada, The Wanderings of Oisin (1889), The Wind Among the Reeds (1899), and Fairy and Folk Tales of Irish Peasantry. In 1896, Yeats finds himself in the middle of the Irish Revolution. Yeats became involved with the Celtic Revival, a movement against the cultural influences of English rule in Ireland. At the same time, he falls in love with Maud Gonne, but then she married someone else. He then married Lady Gregory, who becomes an important figure in his poems. Together, they found the Irish National Theater. His written works grew fame all over the world. Yeats had a life-long interest in mysticism. His poetry became more based in reality, less ambiguous and more direct. He had beliefs in idiosyncratic philosophy, and his poetry continued to grow stronger as he grew older. His poetry delivered a message of broad and diverse as the man himself. He constantly strives to explain and make analogous to the folklore of his native land. His poetry serves as a record of his own personal struggle. Yeats became deeply involved with politics. He was elected a senator of the Irish Free Republic in 1922 till 1928. In 1923, he won a Nobel Prize for Literature. Yeats was the father of a daughter in 1919 and a son in 1921. He died in 1939 at the age of 73. He is remembered as an important cultural leader, a playwright, and a poet. William Butler Yeats, The Academy of American Poets. 1997-2002 Go Back Main Page

William Butler Yeats
William Butler Yeats has secured his seat in literary history for all time.
His poetry, prose, and playwriting are known as literary classics. One of his accomplishments was his ability to blend early pagan legend and Gaelic literature with Christianity. Not only did he become a Nobel Prize winner, but he is also remembered as an influential and avid politician.
Yeats grew up as the son of famous Irish painter John Butler Yeats. He spent his childhood alternating residencies in Ireland and England. As he grew older, he became more aware of the English traditions and grew weary of its snobbery. Being raised Protestant, he became interested in the history of his country according to the Catholic teaching. As he grew even older, he sparked an interest in mythology and pagan beliefs. These themes appear in such poems as "Leda And The Swan" and "The Second Coming," as well as many of his other poems.
