When his father died in 1743 George moved in with his half brother Lawrence at his plantation on the Potomac called Mount Vernon. After having a brilliant military career, Washington became president in New York City on April 30, 1789. Having served two terms as president, Washington retired in 1797. American President Woodrow Wilson, 1856-1924
America's 28th President Woodrow Wilson was the first Chief Executive to have earned a doctorate, and his creation of the League of Nations in 1919 earned him the Nobel Prize for Peace. The President who instituted the 8-hour work day, created child labor laws, and gave women the right to vote, suffered a paralytic stroke during his second term, and died three years later on February 3rd, 1924. The son of Presbyterian minister Joseph Ruggles Wilson and his English-born wife, Janet Woodrow, Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28th, 1856. His father's pastorage and role as a military chaplain during the Civil War led the Wilson family to a gypsy existence, living in various towns and cities in Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia until Reverend Joseph Wilson became an instructor at the Columbia Theological Seminary in South Carolina. Wilson was dyslexic from early childhood and did not learn to read until he was 10 years old, but through sheer determination became an exceptional scholar. Accepted at Davidson College of North Carolina, Wilson transferred to Princeton in 1875 and graduated in 1879 to go on to the University of Virginia where he received his law degree. After two years of private practice in Atlanta, during which time Wilson adopted the use of his middle name, Woodrow, he undertook graduate work at Johns Hopkins University where he received a PhD in government and history, and his thesis went on to publication as a definitive political text.
